Alberto Callaspo takes over as regular second baseman

(6/28/14) Athletics infielder Alberto Callaspo has taken over as the regular starter at second base, the Oakland Tribune reports.

"He's made his own opportunity," manager Bob Melvin said of Callaspo, who drew another start Saturday over Eric Sogard.

Callaspo returned from parternity leave in mid-June to go 8 for 11 over a three-game stretch before enduring a hitless streak over the following three games. He's 5 for 16 in the four games since the 0-for-8 three-game stretch.

On the season, Callaspo has hit .241/.331/.319 with three home runs and 24 RBI in 232 at-bats. He has also recorded more walks (31) than strikeouts (29).
