Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler ejected for spiking bat near home plate
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(7/19/15) Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler was ejected from Sunday's game against the Orioles in the third inning for slamming his bat to the ground twice on his way to first base, according to MLive.com.
Kinsler did not seem happy with a 2-0 pitch from Orioles starting pitcher Miguel Gonzalez that was called a strike. Kinsler stepped out of the batter's box, took his helmet off and took his time before stepping back in.
On the next pitch, he flew out to center field and was ejected even before the baseball was caught. He broke his bat by slamming it to the ground and spiked the bat into the ground in the direction of home plate. Umpire Manny Gonzalez ejected Kinsler as the bat came to rest in the dirt near home plate.
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus got between Kinsler and Gonzalez. Kinsler then made his feelings known to crew chief Fieldin Culbreth, who was the second base umpire Sunday.
Kinsler, who was hitless in two at-bats, was ejected from a game for the eighth time in his career.
|2014 summary: Ian Kinsler's eight-year run as the Rangers' second baseman ended last offseason when he was sent to the Tigers for Prince Fielder and cash considerations. Also gone were Kinsler's string of seasons with average-or-better walk rates, as he came to Detroit with a new aggressive approach. It didn't hurt his power production (17 home runs, 40 doubles) or his batting average (.275), and joining the Tigers' lineup, which ranked second in the majors in scoring, did wonders for his run production. Kinsler scored 100 runs, and even though he hit mostly in the leadoff or second spot, he drove in 92 runs.|
Playing time status: Kinsler had health issues earlier in his career, but he set a career high with 161 games played in 2014. He has also played in at least 155 games in three of the last four seasons.
2015 outlook: Though his new style may not be popular with owners in OBP leagues, in traditional formats, Kinsler is just short of being an elite option. He should repeat as one of the top six second basemen in Fantasy value, and can be targeted as an early-round option.
