Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez strikes out six in losing effort

by Brandon Wise |
(4/26/15) Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez allowed five runs, one earned, on five hits in 5 2/3 innings of work in Kansas City's 5-3 loss to the White Sox Sunday.

Everything fell apart for Volquez in the sixth inning when after two men reached with one out, Volquez threw a wild pitch and then a fielding error allowed a run to score. Adam LaRoche then ripped an RBI single to left center to bring home another run before Conor Gillaspie connected for an RBI single to right to bring home two more runs.

"The first five innings he was awesome," manager Ned Yost said of Volquez. "I had [pitching coach] Dave [Eiland] go back and look at the pitches and none of them were horrible pitches. They just found holes, they hit the ball and we had a chance to maybe turn a tough double play -- it wasn't by any means a routine double play -- but that would have got him out of the inning."

Volquez, who also struck out six with two walks, lowered his ERA to 1.91, but moved his record to 2-2 on the year. He will look to get back on track Friday against the Tigers.

Royals-White Sox postponed due to inclement weather Saturday

by Brandon Wise |
(4/25/15) The Royals and White Sox game scheduled for Saturday was postponed due to inclement weather in Chicago. Scheduled starters for the game, Edinson Volquez and John Danks, will have their starts pushed back to Sunday, pushing everyone in the rotation back one day.

Volquez has a career 1-1 record against the White Sox with a 4.26 ERA and eight strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings. Danks, meanwhile, has a career 7-1 record against Kansas City with a 2.63 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 109 1/3 innings pitched.

Five ejected from White Sox-Royals Thursday after brawl

by R.J. White |
(4/23/15) A comebacker by White Sox outfielder Adam Eaton to Royals starter Yordano Ventura for the final out in the seventh inning ignited a benches-clearing brawl in Thursday's game between the two teams, resulting in five players getting ejected.

Ventura could be seen mouthing an expletive to Eaton, taking apparent umbridge with the comebacker or something that Eaton may have said on his way to first base. After the ruckus was finally settled, the umpires ejected Ventura along with outfielder Lorenzo Cain and pitcher Edinson Volquez. White Sox starter Chris Sale and teammate Jeff Samardzija were also hit with ejections, ending the night of both starting pitchers in one fell swoop.

Ventura, who was ejected for the second time this season and is likely facing a lengthy suspension, finished the night with two earned runs on five hits and one walk in seven innings along with eight strikeouts.

Sale threw 70 of his 99 pitches for strikes but managed to rack up just two strikeouts before being ejected. He also allowed two earned runs on nine hits and one walk in seven innings of work.

Play resumed in the top of the eighth inning with the two teams tied 2-2.

Royals P Edinson Volquez strikes out 5 in win over Twins

by Jason Butt |
(4/20/15) Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez gave up only one earned run in Monday's 7-1 win over the Twins.

Volquez went seven innings and struck out five batters. He allowed five hits and walked just one hitter. Volquez threw 98 pitches and faced 27 batters during his time in the game.

"I think my fastball was better tonight," Volquez said, per "I didn't have my changeup tonight. I didn't have my best stuff. I had good command. I located my pitches better because I knew I didn't have my best stuff."

Volquez's ERA is 1.99 for the season. His record improves to 2-1.

Volquez is projected to start again on Saturday against the White Sox.

Royals' Edinson Volquez dwells on one bad pitch to Oswaldo Arcia

by Igor Mello |
(4/16/15) Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez enjoyed a "fantastic" outing, according to manager Ned Yost, but the right-hander told reporters he regretted one of pitches he made to the Twins on Wednesday, per

"Everything was good all night," Volquez said. "I was throwing a lot of strikes. The whole game I threw well -- just one bad pitch."

Oswaldo Arcia crushed a 2-1 fastball off Volquez for a two-run home run, which proved to be the difference in a 3-1 defeat to Minnesota. Volquez shook off catcher Salvador Perez, which led to Arcia's pivotal home run.

"Salvy called a changeup, I threw a fastball that came back over the middle of the plate," Volquez said. "Salvy wanted a changeup down and away. I was just trying to come in and didn't get it in."
