Royals confirm deal with RHP Edinson Volquez
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(12/29/14) The Royals have made official what CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reported nearly two weeks ago. That is, they have signed veteran right-hander Edinson Volquez.
The two-year deal includes a mutual option for 2017. It reportedly guarantees him $20 million.
The sometimes-erratic Volquez enjoyed his finest season since 2008 last year with Pittsburgh. He finished 13-7 with a 3.04 ERA and just 166 hits in 192 2/3 innings. His control improved dramatically as he walked 71.

Volquez, who pitched for the Pirates in 2014, went 13-7 with a 3.04 ERA and 140 strikeouts.
Pirates working to re-sign starting pitcher Edinson Volquez

|(12/9/14) The Pirates are working to re-sign starting pitcher Edinson Volquez, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. Volquez went 13-7 with a 3.04 ERA in 32 outings (31 starts) for Pittsburgh in 2014.
Report: Pirates make an offer to SP Edinson Volquez
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(12/2/14) The Pirates have made an offer to free agent pitcher Edinson Volquez, according to a report from Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. According to his source, talks between both sides are considered slow during the "quiet period" leading up to baseball's winter meetings.
In 2014, Volquez went 13-7 with a 3.04 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP over 192 2/3 innings of work.
|2014 summary: General manager Neal Huntington boldly proclaimed the Pirates could fix Edinson Volquez upon signing him last winter, and sure enough, pitching coach Ray Searage's handiwork paid off again. It took a while -- and for a couple months there, Volquez looked like he wasn't deserving of a rotation spot at all -- but over his final 17 starts, he went 9-1 with a 1.85 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 6.9 strikeouts per nine innings, finishing ahead of notables Ervin Santana and Yordano Ventura in Head-to-Head points leagues.|
Playing time status: Now with Kansas City, Volquez's separation from Searage is cause for some concern, but the Royals have a reputation for getting the most out of pitchers in recent years (Santana and Jeremy Guthrie come to mind) and, like the Pirates, play in a pitcher's park.
2015 outlook: Last season was clearly a success for Volquez, but the turnaround came at the expense of his strikeout rate, which had long been his calling card. More of a ground-ball specialist now than a bat-misser, he has limits to his upside, but it's a worthy tradeoff in Fantasy. Think of him as a poor man's Henderson Alvarez and a reasonable choice to fill out your pitching staff late in mixed-league drafts.
