Marlins place Jarrod Saltalamacchia on paternity leave

by Shawn Krest |
(4/24/15) The Marlins placed catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia on paternity leave, the team announced on Friday.

To replace him on the roster, Miami called up catcher Jhonatan Solano from Triple-A New Orleans. Solano was hitting .185 with a home run and three RBI in the minors this season. He returns to the Majors for the first time since 2013, with Washington. He has a .217 average in 36 games in the bigs.

To make room for Solano on the 40-man roster, the Marlins designated LHP Grant Dayton for assignment. Dayton has been with the team since the start of his pro career in 2010. He has a 4.05 ERA in six and two thirds innings this year.

Marlins stick with Jacob Realmuto at catcher Wednesday

by Brandon Wise |
(4/22/15) The Marlins will continue to use Jacob Realmuto at catcher Wednesday against the Phillies, his third straight start behind the plate.

Realmuto continues to start over Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who is just 2 for 25 with a home run to start the season. Realmuto is hitting .278 with two doubles and two RBI in 18 at-bats this season. The Marlins are currently the underdogs (+123) against Philadelphia.

Saltalamacchia on benching: 'I'm not going to cause a distraction'

by Igor Mello |
(4/17/15) Marlins catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia told reporters he doesn't agree with manager Mike Redmond's decision to start J.T. Realmuto over the last three games, according to the Palm Beach Post.

"Am I mad? Yeah I'm mad, I want to play," Saltalamacchia said. "I'm not going to hurt this team. I'm not going to be the reason that causes a distraction.

"No hard feelings whatsoever. I want to win. My job is to help the team win so whatever I can do to help is what I'm going to do."

Realmuto was promoted from Triple-A New Orleans on Monday, and is hitting .286 (2 for 7) in three games. Saltalamacchia is off to a slow start, batting .091 (2 for 22) with with one home run in seven games (six starts).

"It's six games in. Six games in is a really tough sample to go off of," Saltalamacchia said. "I've never been in this situation before so it's a little different. Come to the ballpark every day ready to play, do what I can to make the team better, be ready whenever I'm called upon."

Marlins' J.T. Realmuto starting Thursday vs. Mets

by R.J. White |
(4/16/15) Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto is in the starting lineup for the second straight day, batting seventh in his team's game against the Mets.

Realmuto drew his first start of the season Wednesday and responded by going 2 for 3 with a double, a walk and two runs scored. He's getting rewarded with another start Thursday, so Jarrod Saltalamacchia will be available off the bench for a second straight game.

"There’s no doubt Salty’s been grinding, the idea is to give him a couple of days just to kind of regroup and we’ll go from there," manager Mike Redmond said, per the Palm Beach Post. "J.T. is a guy that has played a lot in the minor leagues. With young guys you want to be careful not to sit them on the bench for an extended period of time. So we’ll try to get him in there as much as we can. We’ll see how we go from there."

The Marlins are slight underdogs (-102) against the Mets Thursday.

Marlins' Jarrod Saltalamacchia hits first home run Sunday

by R.J. White |
(4/12/15) Marlins catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit his first home run in his team's 8-5 loss to the Rays Sunday.

Saltalamacchia was not in the starting lineup but entered the game after an injury to Jeff Mathis. He then launched his first home run of the season in the bottom of the ninth inning in his only at-bat, though the homer didn't affect the result of the game. The catcher is 2 for 14 on the season after Sunday's home run.
