Angels starting pitcher Jered Weaver falls to 0-4 on Sunday

by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer
(5/3/15) Angels starting pitcher Jered Weaver (0-4) yielded consecutive home runs in the first inning on Sunday and never recovered, giving up five runs, overall, on 10 hits in five innings for a loss in San Francisco.

Nori Aoki and Joe Panik delivered the back-to-back blows for the Giants.

Weaver's fastball stayed around 83-84 mph all game and remains winless after six starts this season.

"It's frustrating," he said. "I'm not doing a very good job of helping the team win right now. It's tough. Just when you think the outing is going to be good, it starts out like it did today."

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said after the game that he has no plans on skipping Weaver for his next start.

"I don't think there's any magic pixie dust you can sprinkle on it and get him going," Scioscia said. "It's gonna be a process. He's not injured."

Weaver will seek his first win of 2015 on Friday against the Astros.

Angels bat Chris Iannetta ninth, behind pitcher

by Shawn Krest |
(5/3/15) Angels catcher Chris Iannetta will hit ninth in the order in Sunday's interleague game at San Francisco, one spot behind the pitcher.

Starting pitcher Jered Weaver, who has a .118/.167/.118 career slash line at the plate, will hit eighth. His last base hit was in 2012.

Scioscia on Angels RHP Jered Weaver: 'He will figure this out'

by Marty Gitlin |
(4/29/15) The good news for Angels right-hander Jered Weaver is that he issued no walks for a third straight start Tuesday. It's the first time in his career he has accomplished that.

The bad news is everything else.

Weaver turned a two-run lead into a three-run deficit by allowing five in the first inning in a loss to Oakland. He yielded just one more run over the next six, but that did not improve his mood as he finished April without a victory.

"It's definitely frustrating," he told "My M.O. is to try to keep us in it, and I wasn't able to do that tonight."

Weaver is 0-3 with a 5.86 ERA, but Mike Scioscia remains unworried.

"If he was throwing the ball as well as he could and hitting spots and had everything going and was getting hit, we'd be a little more concerned," Scioscia said. "But you can still see the upside with Jered. This guy just knows his way through a game. He knows what he's doing. He will figure this out."

Angels starter Jered Weaver gives up two homers, falls to 0-3

by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer
(4/29/15) Angels starter Jered Weaver (0-3) failed to earn his first win of the season on Tuesday, allowing six runs on six hits in seven innings to suffer the loss to the A's.

Weaver was tagged for a three-run homer from Brett Lawrie and a two-run shot from Josh Reddick in the defeat.

Weaver had one strike out and no walks in the game.

Weaver's next start is scheduled for Sunday in San Francisco.

Angels' Jered Weaver on having a short leash: 'Not my decision'

by Igor Mello |
(4/23/15) Angels pitcher Jered Weaver who bulked up to 224 pounds in the offseason in an effort to pitch deeper into games, is anxious to earn a longer leash this season, according to

Weaver showed some frustration when manager Mike Scioscia walked him off the mound at the end of top of the sixth inning against Oakland on Wednesday. He allowed one run on eight hits over six innings of work in a 9-2 loss the Athletics. Of his season-high 93 pitches, 61 were strikes.

"It's not my decision," Weaver said. "It's [Scioscia's] decision. He knows where I'm at and how I'm feeling mechanically and body-wise. It's going to take a little bit of time to get that trust back and prove to him that I can be the guy that goes out there and throws 100, 115 pitches. That's what I was used to a couple years ago. But body-wise, I'm just trying to get to where I know I can be. Until then, he's going to have a little shorter leash on me."
