Justin Upton average falling, power numbers rising for Padres
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(4/29/15) The batting average of Padres cleanup hitter Justin Upton has been dropping steadily for more than a week. It fell another point Tuesday night, but he continued to produce in the power department.
Upton smashed his sixth home run, a solo job in the sixth inning, in a loss to Houston. His third tater in the last four games gave him 14 RBI on the year, but he has just five hits in his last 28 at-bats and 23 strikeouts in 21 games.
Padres' Justin Upton smacks two home runs in losing effort

|(4/26/15) Padres left fielder Justin Upton went 2 for 3 at the plate in San Diego's 11-8 loss to the Dodgers Saturday. Upton got things going early with a two-run shot off of Brandon McCarthy in the first over the right field wall.
Upton did it again in the sixth, taking McCarthy to center field on an 0-2 pitch for a three-run shot, his fifth of the season. Upton continues to swing a hot bat, raising his average to .303 with 13 RBI on the season, five on Saturday, in 66 at-bats on the year.
Padres view Justin Upton as a one-year buy for now
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(4/24/15) The Padres are viewing Justin Upton, who is entering the final year of his six-year, $51.25 million contract, as a one-year buy for now, though that could change depending how this season goes, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman on Friday.
Upton, who was acquired in an offseason trade with the Braves, is hitting .288 (17 for 59) with three doubles, a triple, three homers, eight RBI and a .328 on-base percentage through 16 games.
|2014 summary: Justin Upton solidified his place as one of the game's top power hitters in 2014, but not really by doing anything differently. It's just with power numbers on the decline across the league, his 29 ended up tying for 12th among all hitters. He was at least more consistent than in his first year with the Braves, when he hit 20 of his 27 home runs in April and August. His 102 RBI on one of the league's worst offensive teams were also a testament to his consistency.|
Playing time status: Upton is set to hit the free agent market next year while still at the beginning of his prime, so the Braves moved him to the Padres for a package of prospects. He'll obviously play every day, and has hit well in pitcher-friendly Petco Park -- .291/.359/.541 with 10 home runs and 11 doubles in 192 career plate appearances.
2015 outlook: Given the hype as a former No. 1 overall pick, Upton has a reputation for disappointing in Fantasy, but the good far outweighs the bad with him. He strikes out so much that you can't expect him to help much in batting average, but he makes up for it, at least in points leagues, with an above-average walk rate and is obviously a great source of power. Plus, at his age, there's still some potential for improvement. He's a top 12 outfielder, though on the back end of that group, and you can look to draft him beginning in Round 3.
