Cavaliers PF Tristan Thompson to become restricted free agent

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11/1/14) The Cavaliers and power forward Tristan Thompson were unable to come to an agreement on a contract extension by Friday's midnight deadline, meaning Thompson will become a restricted free agent next offseason.

The Cavaliers offered Thompson upwards of $48 million, according to FOX Sports Ohio, but the two sides were unable to come to terms on a potential extension.

Extension doesn't appear likely for Cavaliers F Tristan Thompson

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(10/31/14) The Cavaliers and power forward/center Tristan Thompson are still far apart in extension talks and both sides are unlikely to to come to an agreement by Friday's midnight deadline, Brian Windhorst of ESPN reports.

Thompson averaged 11.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game last season. He'll become a restricted free agent at the end of the season, if both sides fail to reach an agreement.

Report: Cavaliers PF Thompson signing could be in works

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/30/14) Optimism has replaced pessimism for the Cavaliers in regard to signing power forward/center Tristan Thompson to a contract extension, multiple sources have told the Akron Beacon Journal.

Thompson will become a restricted free agent if an agreement isn't reached prior to the Friday deadline. The team would be allowed to match any offer, but it might not reach that point.

"We'd like to sign Tristant long-term to the Cavaliers; I don't think that's any secret," owner Dan Gilbert said Wednesday. "I believe they'd like to do that as well. So we'll hopefully see what happens this week."

Complicating matters is the possible extension of teammate and fellow center Anderson Varejao, whose presence played a role in the return of buddy LeBron James to Cleveland. Varejao is making $9.7 million this year and the team wants him back. He is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in 2015.

Thompson averaged 11.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game as a full-time starter last year, but will be coming off the bench to start this season.

Report: 'Zero discussion' on extension for Cavs' Tristan Thompson

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(10/25/14) The Cavaliers and forward Tristan Thompson have had "zero discussion on an extension" with the Oct. 31 deadline less than a week away, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. If the two sides don't agree to a deal befor the deadline, Thompson will become a restricted free agent next offseason.

Report: Varejao beats out Thompson as Cavs starting center

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/24/14) What was speculated has become official -- Anderson Varejao is the starting center for the Cavaliers and Tristan Thompson will come off the bench, according to the Northeast Ohio Media Group.

Both players performed well in exhibition play, but Varejao provides more of an interior defensive presence and has improved his offensive game markedly. Thompson has also become a greater offensive threat, but is considered more of a power forward on defense.
