Cavaliers' Tristan Thompson: Plays postseason-high 40 minutes in Game 1 win

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/3/16) Thompson tallied eight points (3-6 FG, 2-4 FT), 14 rebounds, two assists, and two blocks across 40 minutes in Monday's 104-93 Game 1 victory over the Hawks.

The 40 minutes were the most Thompson had seen in any of the Cavs' five postseason contests, as coach Tyronn Lue needed the versatile big man to help slow down the Hawks' frontcourt tandem of Al Horford and Paul Millsap. Since taking over permanently as the Cavs' starting center late in the regular season, Thompson has made former starter Timofey Mozgov an afterthought in Lue's rotation, as the Cavs have used Thompson and Kevin Love almost exclusively at the position.

Cavaliers' Tristan Thompson: Approaches double-double in Game 3 win versus Pistons

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/23/16) Thompson tallied eight points (4-7 FG, 0-1 FT), 10 rebounds, two blocks, one assist, and one steal across 31 minutes during the Cavaliers' 101-91 win against the Pistons on Friday.

Thompson saw the least amount of time among the starters during Friday's win. However, no one on the bench earned 20 minutes, and former starting center Timofey Mozgov was a healthy scratch in Game 3. Thompson played just 13 minutes in Game 2, but he is still averaging 25 minutes per game this series while Mozgov has seen just seven minutes per appearance. Cavaliers' coach Tyronn Lue has opted to run with Kevin Love at center sometimes to improve floor spacing, but Thompson has still logged 30 minutes or more in two of the three playoff games thus far.

Cavaliers' Tristan Thompson: To start rest of way

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/11/16) Coach Tyronn Lue said Monday that Thompson will be the permanent starter at center for the rest of the season, Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

While Lue didn't offer much of an explanation for the decision, it doesn't come as a huge surprise, especially considering how poorly Timofey Mozgov has played this season. Thompson has started periodically during the regular season, and he's a far more versatile defender than Mozgov, who's virtually unplayable against most of the small-ball lineups the Cavs will likely face in the playoffs. From a playing time standpoint, Thompson figures to see a mild boost, but he's already averaging close to 28 minutes per game, so it's unlikely to be drastic. That said, against certain teams/matchups, he could be asked to take on a much larger workload, as was the case last year when he averaged 26.8 minutes in the regular season compared to 36.4 in the postseason.

Cavaliers' Tristan Thompson: Double-doubles on Tuesday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/30/16) Thompson totaled 16 points (4-8 FG, 8-9 FT), 10 rebounds, one steal, and one block in 39 minutes during the Cavaliers' 106-100 loss to the Rockets on Tuesday.

Thompson committed five fouls and three turnovers, yet he was very arguably the team's most steady performer while LeBron James (rest) sat out on Tuesday. Starting center Timofey Mozgov played only nine minutes, and Thompson operated strictly as the five. Thompson now has 23 double-doubles in 2015-16, which is still 13 fewer than he had during 2013-14.

Cavaliers' Tristan Thompson: Comes off bench to notch double-double

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(3/24/16) Thompson scored 13 points (6-9 FG, 1-1 FT) to go with 10 rebounds and two blocks over 30 minutes in a 113-104 victory over the Bucks on Wednesday.

It was an efficient outing for Thompson, who has now received a higher minutes total than Timofey Mozgov in each of Cleveland's last two games. Thompson hasn't exactly been the face of consistency of late; the 25-year-old has now averaged six points with just 7.5 rebounds over his last six games. Having tallied 22 double-doubles this season, Thompson will look to dominate the boards in Thursday's match-up with the Nets.
