Cavaliers PG Kyrie Irving happy Tristan Thompson starting

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:26 am ET) The placement of Cavaliers power forward Tristan Thompson into the starting lineup for Game 4 has point guard Kyrie Irving smiling a bit more.

"We get our 3-man back," Irving told Bleacher Report.

Irving was referring to LeBron James, who was forced to play power forward in the opener as a replacement for injured Kevin Love. Irving prefers James to push the pace with him rather than play in the post.

The insertion of Thompson into a starting role prevents the Cavaliers from bringing any big men off the bench unless they are willing to play little-used Kendrick Perkins.

Report: Tristan Thompson in, Mike Miller out of Cavaliers lineup

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:22 am ET) Cavaliers power forward and super sub Tristan Thompson, who led the NBA this season in offensive rebounding off the bench, will reportedly not be a super sub in Game 2 of the playoff series against Chicago on Wednesday night. He is set to start, league sources have told the Northeast Ohio Media Group.

Thompson came off the bench in the first-game loss and managed four points and eight rebounds in 37 minutes. With Thompson pairing up with LeBron James and Timofey Mozgov, the Cavaliers would boast a frontcourt of three players 6-foot-8 and taller.

The move would send Mike Miller to the bench. Miller, who did not play at all in the first-round series against Boston, failed to provide much production in the opener.

It remains to be seen who Thompson guards, but he might match up with Pau Gasol, whose length and mid-range jumper wreaked havoc on the Cavaliers in Game 1.

Tristan Thompson gets 14 points, 19 rebounds in Cavaliers' loss

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(3/1/15) Tristan Thompson came off the bench to record a double-double for the Cavaliers in Sunday's 105-103 overtime loss to the Rockets.

Thompson had 14 points on five-of-nine shooting. He also grabbed a season-high 19 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive end.

Thompson came up big in the fourth quarter, scoring eight points and gathering 10 boards. He scored the final points of regulation, tying the game at the free throw line with 1:09 left.

The Cavaliers next host the Celtics on Tuesday.

Cavaliers rule Kevin Love (eye) out of Thursday's game

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(2/12/15) The Cavaliers ruled forward Kevin Love (eye) out of Thursday's game, reports The Plain Dealer.

Love suffered a corneal abrasion during Wednesday's contest and was considered questionable for Thursday's game. Tristan Thompson will start in place of Love.

The Cavaliers are 2 1/2-point favorites.

Cavaliers F Tristan Thompson adapting to role off the bench

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(2/4/15) With the mid-season addition of Timofey Mozgov, Cavaliers forward Tristan Thompson is adapting to his role off the bench, working behind Mozgov and Kevin Love, respectively, according to the The News-Herald and The Morning Journal.

"I'm bringing the energy," Thompson said, who will be a restricted free agent next season. "That's my role on this team. That leads to getting extra possessions on the court. Defensively, just taking on the challenge of guarding the other team's best big and giving Timo and Kevin a breather."

The 23-year-old is averaging 9.0 points and 8.4 boards per game, and is shooting a career-best 52.1 percent from the floor this season. During Cleveland's 11-game winning streak, Thompson has grabbed eight-plus rebounds in nine of 11 games.

"He's doing a great job," coach David Blatt said. "He's defending post players, rebounding and finishing when we ask him to. Sometimes he plays in tandem with Kevin and Timo.

"He's been very solid throughout the year. We're getting that maximum effort every time he steps on the floor. It's a big part of what he brings to the table and what we need from him."
