Pelicans' Omer Asik: Disastrous start against Nets

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/13/17) Asik scored zero points (0-0 FG) and collected one rebound in 5 minutes Thursday during a 104-95 win over Brooklyn.

Well, that didn't take long. With Anthony Davis (hip) out, Asik got the start against the Nets, and although Dante Cunningham and Terrence Jones were still expected to get the lion's share of frontcourt minutes, Asik bombed out of the game early. He got dunked on, picked up two early fouls and didn't see the court again. Not that he was on anyone's fantasy radar before, but his fantasy value is officially at rock bottom.

Pelicans' Omer Asik: Will start at center Thursday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/12/17) Asik will start at center for Thursday's game against the Nets, Daniel Sallerson of Pelicans.com reports.

Anthony Davis is sitting out with a hip injury, so the Pelicans are opting to go back to a big lineup, using Asik at center to matchup with Brook Lopez of the Nets. Asik hasn't seen the floor over the last eight games, so he'll see a pretty significant bump in playing time. That said, it seems more likely that guys like Terrence Jones and Dante Cunningham will benefit the most from Davis' absence, so it may still be a bit too risky to use Asik in DFS contests despite drawing the start.

Pelicans' Omer Asik: Still not included in rotation

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(1/10/17) Asik (coach's decision) was a healthy inactive for Monday's 110-96 win over the Knicks.

Since playing nine minutes off the bench Dec. 21 against the Thunder, Asik hasn't played at all, as he's remained glued to the bench for the past eight games. The fact that he was one of the Pelicans' inactives over lightly-used second-round pick Cheick Diallo speaks to how far Asik's stock has fallen since signing a five-year, $57.7 million contract in the summer of 2015. With the Pelicans unlikely to find a trade partner willing to take on Asik's onerous contract, the center will continue to eat up a roster spot better served for another player.

Pelicans' Omer Asik: Drops out of rotation for second straight game

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(12/19/16) Asik (coach's decision) didn't see the floor in a 113-100 loss to the Spurs on Sunday.

Alexis Ajinca has taken over as the Pelicans' starting center for the last seven games and came through with 16 points and eight rebounds in 27 minutes Sunday, resulting in Asik dropping out of the rotation. Asik hasn't played in three of the last four games and has largely been a non-factor for the Pelicans since signing a five-year, $58 million contract with the team last July. The huge contract may be the only thing keeping him on the 15-man roster at this point, as he's proven to be a poor fit in coach Alvin Gentry's offensive system.

Pelicans' Omer Asik: Plays season-low four minutes Sunday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(12/12/16) Asik played a season-low four minutes in Sunday's 120-119 overtime loss to the Suns, accruing no statistics.

The up-tempo nature of Sunday's game prompted coach Alvin Gentry to go away from his two traditional centers, Asik and Alexis Ajinca (12 minutes), as Anthony Davis saw most of the playing time at the position. Ajinca has started over Asik in the last three games, but both players will remain marginalized regardless of who gets the nod at center in future games. In his 18 starts this season, Asik averaged only 16.8 minutes per game, and Ajinca has seen just 15.0 minutes per game in his three turns with the top unit.
