Clippers' Blake Griffin: Return during training camp 'realistic'

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(7/19/17) Griffin (toe), who has met with five foot specialists, said it's 'realistic' that he'll be healthy for training camp, Jovan Buha of ESPN reports.

Griffin, who recently re-signed with the Clippers on a five-year, $173 million contract, has made it known that it's realistic to expect him to be healthy for training camp after undergoing surgery in early May to repair the plantar plate in his right big toe -- an injury he suffered in the first round of last year's playoffs. Griffin being ready for training camp is especially important this upcoming season, as the departure of Chris Paul to the Rockets means coach Doc Rivers will likely have to implement a new gameplan. While there's no guarantee that Griffin will be 100 percent healthy by the time camp rolls around, we should continue to see his status monitored as the season draws closer.

Clippers' Blake Griffin: Expected to re-sign with Clippers

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(6/30/17) Griffin plans to reach an agreement with the Clippers on a five-year, $173 million contract, Shams Charania of The Vertical reports.

Griffin canceled scheduled meetings with the Suns and Nuggets at the last minute. The former No. 1 overall pick will remain with the franchise that drafted him in 2010. It was considered a real possibility that the Oklahoma product would head elsewhere after the club traded star point guard Chris Paul to the Rockets. However, It appears the Clippers will forego any attempt at a rebuild, as the re-signing of Griffin confirms they are still looking to win now. The veteran big man has been productive when on the floor, but he has missed an average of 26 games each of the last three seasons, so his durability remains his greatest concern. His game has shifted from a high-flyer to more of a spot-up shooter as of late, which could help his ability to stay on the floor going forward. It remains to be seen how the Clippers will fill the roster around him, but he could be put in more of a play-making role entering the upcoming season.

Clippers' Blake Griffin: Opts out of contract

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(6/23/17) Griffin (toe) has opted out of his contract, making him an unrestricted free agent, Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reports.

Griffin was scheduled to earn over $21 million during the upcoming season, but, as expected, he'll forgo that salary in search of a new long-term deal this offseason. While Griffin opting out doesn't come as a surprise, it does drive home the reality that he could leave Los Angeles this summer. At 28 years old, Griffin has averaged just over 21 points each of the last three seasons, while posting around eight rebounds and five assists per game the past two. Although he's ended back-to-back campaigns injured, Griffin still figures to be one of the five most-coveted free agents this offseason, giving the Clippers stiff competition to retain their star forward.

Clippers' Blake Griffin: Undergoes successful surgery Monday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/1/17) Griffin underwent successful surgery Monday to repair the plantar plate in his right big toe, Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times reports.

After an MRI revealed the injury during the first round of the playoffs, Griffin was subsequently ruled out for the rest of the postseason. He's now officially underwent surgery on the toe, but the Clippers have yet to give any sort of concrete timetable for a return, although according to Bill Oram of the Orange County Register, Griffin should be ready to go by the preseason schedule. Griffin is expected to opt out of his $21.4 million player option for the 2017-18 season, which would make him an unrestricted free agent this summer. The Clippers will be able to offer Griffin the most money on a max deal, but it remains to be seen if that will be enough to retain his services. Look for additional updates on Griffin's toe throughout the offseason.

Clippers' Blake Griffin: Ruled out for rest of postseason

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/22/17) Griffin (toe) has been ruled out for the remainder of the postseason due to an injury to the plantar plate of his right big toe, ESPN's Marc Stein reports.

Through the first two games of the Clippers' Round 1 series against the Jazz, Griffin provided a combined 50 points, five assists and 12 rebounds, but he was limited to just 18 minutes in Saturday's Game 3. The 28-year-old left the game after putting up 11 points and six rebounds, and a subsequent MRI on Saturday morning revealed the plantar plate issue. The loss of Griffin is obviously a crushing blow for the Clippers, who have dealt with a number of injuries to key players over the past several years, both during the regular season and the playoffs. In Griffin's absence, expect Marreese Speights to be the primary beneficiary.
