Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki: Finalizes two-year contract with Mavericks

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(7/22/16) Nowitzki finalized his new contract with the Mavericks on Friday, while the deal is set to be worth $50 million over two years, ESPN's Marc Stein reports.

Nowitzki originally agreed to a two-year contract worth around $40 million, but the Mavs have officially upped the number for their veteran forward. He'll be joined in the team's frontcourt by newcomers Andrew Bogut and Harrison Barnes, but Nowitzki will likely remain a solid scoring weapon and viable fantasy option.

Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki: Agrees to new deal with Dallas

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(7/5/16) Nowitzki agreed Monday to re-sign with the Mavericks on a two-year contract worth around $40 million, Marc Stein of ESPN.com reports.

Though the Warriors were said to be interested in Nowitzki prior to the start of free agency, their signing of Kevin Durant closed the door on any chance of the German forward changing addresses. As was the likely outcome all along, he'll stick with the Mavericks and will remain under contract through his 40th birthday. Even at his advancing age, Nowitzki is still delivering high-quality production, as he averaged 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.7 three-pointers in 31.5 minutes per game last season while shooting 44.8 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from three-point range. He'll again be one of the Mavericks' top scoring options in 2016-17.

Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki: Opts out of contract for 2016-17

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(6/21/16) Nowitzki formally declined his $8.69 million contract option for the 2016-17 season on Tuesday and will become an unrestricted free agent, Marc Stein of ESPN.com reports.

With the salary cap set to rise this summer, it was expected all along that Nowitzki would opt out of his current deal and re-sign with the Mavericks on a multi-year pact at a higher annual average salary, but that plan might not be quite as iron clad any longer. After losing to the Cavaliers in the NBA Finals, the Warriors are said to be interested in bringing aboard Nowitzki if they're unable to sign the top prize on this summer's free agent market, Kevin Durant. It still seems more likely than not that Nowitzki will be back in a Mavericks uniform when it's all said and done, but he'll likely wait and see how the market plays out before inking a new deal.

Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki: Set to opt out of deal

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/2/16) Nowitzki is expected to opt out of the final year of his contract, Tim MacMahon of ESPN reports.

Nowitzki has made it clear that he intends to return to Dallas, but it looks as though he'll attempt do so on a new contract. The soon-to-be-38-year-old signed a three-year, $25 million deal in 2014 and can opt in for $8.7 million next season -- a decision he has until June 22 to make. Nowitzki had initially intimated that he would play out his current contract before re-evaluating, but after a strong season in which he averaged 18.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, Nowitzki will likely seek a restructured deal after taking a considerable discount two summers ago. Assuming Nowitzki does opt out, it's highly improbable that Dallas would allow him to walk as a free agent considering his place as the unquestioned best and most important player in franchise history.

Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki: 'Definitely' not retiring

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/26/16) At his exit interview Tuesday, Nowitzki confirmed that he plans to return next season, Tim MacMahon of ESPN reports. "I definitely won't retire," Nowitzki said. "That's out of the question. I felt great this year."

Considering he'll turn 38 in just over a month, the question of whether Nowitzki would consider retiring if a fair one, but the future Hall of Famer appears intent on returning for at least one more season. Nowitzki was in vintage form for most of the year, starting 75 games and averaging 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists in just under 32 minutes per game while shooting 44.8 percent from the field and knocking down 36.8 percent of his threes. While the banged-up Mavericks bowed out in Round 1 of the playoffs, Dallas figures to be a buyer on the free agent market this offseason in hopes of gearing up for at least one more playoff run with Nowitzki still in his late-prime. Nowitzki holds a ludicrously cheap $8.7 million player option for next season, which he'll almost certainly exercise, unless he and the Mavs were to work out a new deal.
