Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki: Agrees to terms with Mavs

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(7/6/17) Nowitzki and the Mavericks agreed to terms on a two-year, $10 million deal Thursday, ESPN reports.

While Nowitzki was technically a free agent, there was no doubt he'd be back with the Mavericks, and the veteran has once again given the team a discount. At age 39, Nowitzki's best days are in the rear view, but he's still a very serviceable player, and he closed last season with averages of 14.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists in just over 26 minutes per game. Injuries limited him to just 54 games, however, and the Mavs will likely be careful with his workload in 2017-18, which could hinder his fantasy utility.

Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki: Option declined by Mavericks

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(6/25/17) Nowitzki will have his $25 million team option for the 2017-18 season declined, but is expected to re-sign with the Mavericks, Marc Stein of ESPN.com reports.

Shortly after this past season concluded, Nowitzki was quick to announce he'd be returning for his 20th year in the NBA, but he'll first need to restructure his contract in order for the Mavericks to free up some space. A new two-year deal is expected to eventually be agreed upon between the two sides, although nothing concrete has been put in place. Once re-signed, Nowitzki should continue to be a key piece in the Mavericks regular rotation, but his numbers could continue to dip as he gets older.

Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki: Will come back for 20th season

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/13/17) Nowitzki is expected back with the Mavericks for the 2017-18 season, Earl K. Sneed of Mavs.com reports.

Nowitzki has squashed retirement talks immediately after the regular season, agreeing to come back to the Mavericks, who hold a $25 million team option for the 38-year-old veteran. They'll be expected to exercise the option, which means Nowitzki is set to take part in his 20th NBA season. Nowitzki continues to see his numbers fall as he gets further and further into his career, with the 2016-17 season marking his lowest scoring average at 14.2 points per game since his rookie season with the Mavericks. That said, he'll still join Harrison Barnes in opening next season as arguably the team's two most important players, although another slight dip in production wouldn't be surprising.

Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki: Will be rested for season finale Wednesday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/11/17) Nowitzki will be held out Wednesday against the Grizzlies for rest purposes, Earl K. Sneed of Mavs.com reports.

Nowitzki wrapped up his season in Tuesday's 109-91 loss to the Nuggets, finishing with 21 points (9-20 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 2-2 FT), eight rebounds, three blocks, one assist and one steal across 27 minutes. With the Mavericks eliminated from playoff contention, there's no real reason to have the aging veteran play in the second game of a back-to-back set, so he'll given the night off. After missing time due to injury early on in the season, Nowitzki was able to stay healthy for much of the second half and finished with avearages of 14.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 three-pointers and 1.5 assists across 26.4 minutes per game. While retirement talk figures to surround Nowitzki again this offseason, the team holds hold a $25 million option on the 38-year-old that it would likely exercise if he agrees to come back.

Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki: Sees restricted minutes Friday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/8/17) Nowitzki contributed eight points (4-6 FG, 0-2 3Pt), three rebounds, three blocks and one assist across 16 minutes in a 102-89 loss to the Spurs on Friday.

With the Mavericks eliminated from playoff contention, it looks like coach Rick Carlisle intends to take it easy on the team's main contributors down the stretch. Aside from undrafted rookie Yogi Ferrell, who has stepped in as the starting point guard with Seth Curry (shoulder) out, Nowitzki and the Mavs' other three starters all saw 18 minutes or fewer Friday. Given that Nowitzki recently got over an Achilles injury, expect his playing time to remain restricted over the final thee contests, making him an unappealing lineup option in most season-long leagues entering the last week of the season.
