Mo Williams: Undergoes knee procedure

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/12/16) Williams underwent a surgical procedure on his left knee Wednesday, Cleveland.com reports.

Last month, the veteran informed the Cavaliers that he would not return to the team, but it's worth noting Williams is yet to officially file retirement papers with the league office. Williams still has $2.2 million remaining on his current contract, and if he opts for retirement, that money would be voided. Cleveland's preference at this point is to negotiate a buyout with Williams, but until they're able to either do that or trade the 34-year-old, he'll technically occupy a spot on their roster, as well as their financial ledger. Trading Williams seems unlikely considering his age and the fact that he just underwent surgery, so it's unclear how the situation will play out. At present, with Williams still on the books and the J.R. Smith saga unsettled, the Cavaliers can only roster 14 other players, which could impact the status of borderline players like Jordan McRae, DeAndre Liggins, Dahntay Jones and Toney Douglas.

Mo Williams: Will retire from NBA

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(9/26/16) Williams' agent told general manager David Griffin that he will retire, Sam Amico of Amico Hoops reports.

Just a day after confirming that the 2016-17 season will be his final one, it appears as though Williams has changed his mind on playing. The 33-year-old will end his career with averages of 13.2 points, 4.9 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game, and his departure opens the door for rookie Kay Felder to serve as the team's primary backup point guard.

Cavaliers' Mo Williams: Will retire after season

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(9/25/16) Williams confirmed that the 2016-17 season will be his final year in the NBA, Chris Haynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Williams had been contemplating retirement in recent weeks, but announced in an Instagram post on Sept. 21 that he would be back for one more year. However, Williams said he has no intention of pursuing a new deal when his contract expires after the season, so it appears he's already made up his mind about the future. The 33-year-old is set to open the season as the top backup to Kyrie Irving at point guard, but it wouldn't be surprise if he lost out on playing time to rookie Kay Felder as the campaign wears on.

Cavaliers' Mo Williams: Shoots down retirement rumors

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(9/21/16) Williams indicated on his personal Twitter account that he's coming back for the 2016-17 season.

There were some reports at the end of August indicating Williams was contemplating retirement and could be released by the Cavaliers prior to the season. However, Williams shot that notion down Wednesday, letting everyone know he was "coming back". Williams averaged a career-low 18 minutes per game during the 2015-16 campaign and is unlikely to see his playing time increase, as he'll continue to run behind starter Kyrie Irving at point guard. Along with coming in as relief for Irving, Williams will also look to groom rookie Kay Felder for the backup point guard role in the future.

Cavaliers' Mo Williams: Mulling retirement

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(8/28/16) Williams is contemplating retirement and could be released by the Cavaliers in the near future, Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com reports.

Williams just completed his 12th NBA season and has the potential to go out on top after the Cavaliers were recently crowned the 2016 NBA champions. A lingering knee injury and a desire to coach were mentioned in regards to his reasoning, which seems to indicate Williams may be ready to move on. He exercised a $2.2 million player option earlier this offseason, so even if he retires, the Cavaliers are on the hook for his contract. If Williams does end up calling it quits, recent second-round pick Kay Felder would likely take over the team's backup point guard role.
