McCluster back for Chiefs

News: Chiefs receiver Dexter McCluster was back at practice in full Tuesday according to the Kansas City Star. He missed some work with a hamstring strain.
Analysis: The Chiefs have their eye on using McCluster this season; coordinator Doug Pederson said they're still putting in plays for him. There seems to be some potential for him to break past the 52 catch, 452 yard marks he had last year. If the Chiefs really lean on the up-tempo style most teams are gravitating toward then McCluster could be a dandy for PPR league owners. Let's keep tabs on him during training camp before calling him draft-worthy.

Chiefs putting plays in for McCluster

News: Though he's sidelined with a hamstring injury, Dexter McCluster is still in the Chiefs' offensive plays according to coordinator Doug Pederson. "We don't need him right now, we need him in September," Pederson said, noting he could play running back or wide receiver. "We continue to put plays in for him. He understands what those are. We still want to utilize his strengths, move him and create matchups with him. He’ll be a big piece to this puzzle."
Analysis: Encouraging words from the coordinator after McCluster has mostly languished with previous coaching staffs. Getting healthy is obviously key for McCluster but there seems to be some potential for him to break past the 52 catch, 452 yard marks he had last year. If the Chiefs really lean on the up-tempo style most teams are gravitating toward then McCluster could be a dandy for PPR league owners. Let's keep tabs on him during training camp before calling him draft-worthy.

Hamstring sidelines McCluster

News: Chiefs receiver Dexter McCluster hurt his hamstring diving for a pass in OTA workouts on Thursday and didn't return. Coach Andy Reid thought he'd have his speedy receiver back in a week according to the Kansas City Star.
Analysis: McCluster impressed quarterback Alex Smith before the injury, prompting Smith to say McCluster was one of those players you could write a gameplan for and then actually implement it. He has underwhelmed in his first three seasons but did catch over 50 passes in 2012. The more involved he becomes, the more appealing he gets for Fantasy owners. We'll see how Reid uses him but for now he's one to watch, not draft, unless you're looking for a sleeper way late in PPR leagues.

Smith likes McCluster

News: Alex Smith commented on how impressed he's been with Chiefs receiver Dexter McCluster. The versatile McCluster has tried to find a niche with the Chiefs since arriving and might have something with coach Andy Reid working to use him effectively. "Not knowing much about Dexter McCluster ... he was the running back/receiver, and seeing how fluid he is, going in and out of those roles has been impressive for me to watch," Smith said Wednesday. "It’s easy to talk about in the meeting room to say let’s put (a) receiver in and have him run routes and be natural at it and then put him back in the backfield to do a multitude of things ... It’s another thing to see it live. He’s a special guy, and he’s really taken it on."
Analysis: For now McCluster is listed as a receiver with the Chiefs but the designation could change before the start of the season. He also has underwhelmed in his first three seasons but did catch over 50 passes in 2012. The more involved he becomes, the more appealing he gets for Fantasy owners. We'll see how Reid uses him but for now he's one to watch, not draft, unless you're looking for a sleeper way late in PPR leagues.

Reid fond of McCluster

News: The Kansas City Star reports that new Chiefs coach Andy Reid is excited to coach Dexter McCluster this year. “He’s not the biggest guy in the world, but he’s got a heart of a lion,” Reid said. “He’s got that … tremendous quickness and can catch. He’s pretty good at running the football, so there is a place for him. You line him up everywhere. You can move him around and kind of do some unique things with him. I like McCluster. I think he’s a good football player and he has a role on this football team. I’ve got some things in mind for him.” McCluster has just 119 catches, 657 rushing yards and four touchdowns during his tenure, but Reid hopes to use him a lot this season. “I was interested in drafting him,” Reid said. “It just didn’t fall that way. But I did have some interest. I liked him as a football player. He’s a unique talent because he can do a couple, three different things for you whether it’s special teams as a returner or whether it’s offense as a receiver or a running back. His value … is that you can move him into different spots where you can utilize his talents the best. You saw what Charlie (Weis) did with him the one year when he kind of mixed him in the different positions offensively. He can handle it. He’s a sharp kid. Obviously he’s a talented kid.”
Analysis: Reid will be McCluster’s third head coach. While the others generally kept McCluster at a certain position for an entire season — he lined up mostly as a receiver in 2010 and 2012 and a running back in 2011 — the Chiefs don’t plan a specific role for McCluster. He has the talent to be a sleeper for Fantasy owners, but we've been down this road before. Don't draft McCluster in the majority of leagues, but he is someone to monitor and could be a nice waiver wire addition during the year.

McCluster posts a catch

News: Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster had one of his quieter performances of the season in Week 17 against the Broncos. He posted just one catch for 5 yards in the 38-3 loss.
Analysis: McCluster caught a career-high 52 passes for 452 yards and a touchdown this season but continues to underwhelm as an option in Fantasy. A better quarterback in Kansas City would likely help so keep an eye out to see if the Chiefs will upgrade at the position in the offseason. McCluster has the ability to be a viable option in Fantasy but has low-end appeal heading into Draft Day in 2013.

McCluster totals 40 yards

News: Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster netted 40 yards of total offense in Week 16 against the Colts. McCluster did most of his damage through the air as he hauled in three passes for 30 yards. He also gained 10 yards on a reserve and but was unable to find the end zone in the 20-13 win. Jon Baldwin led the team in receiving as he hauled in two receptions for 64 yards.
Analysis: McCluster was fairly productive Sunday afternoon but still failed to make the kind of impact that is going to help many Fantasy owners. The 24-year-old has been asked to take on a more prominent role on offense with Dwayne Bowe sidelined but has racked up just 89 receiving yards over his last two games. With all leagues heading into the final week of the playoffs, McCluster should not be considered a viable start when Kansas City takes on the Broncos in Week 17.

McCluster stepping up

News: Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster will once again be asked to take on a larger role during Kansas City's Week 16 matchup against the Colts. McCluster turned in one of his more productive performances of the season in the Chiefs loss to the Raiders last week as he hauled in a season-high seven receptions for 59 yards in the 15-0 defeat. He will now be facing an Indianapolis defense that is allowing an average of 242 yards passing per contest. The Colts have surrendered 23 touchdowns through the air while yielding an average of 24.7 Fantasy points to opposing WRs, which ranks 29th overall.
Analysis: With Dwayne Bowe out for the season due to a ribs injury, McCluster will be asked to take on a more prominent role moving forward, which could be easier said than done for the 24-year-old. The Chiefs offense is an absolute mess right now and McCluster has only totaled more than 50-yards receiving three times thus far while only finding the end zone once on the year. While the Colts have struggled to defend the pass at times this season, McCluster should not be considered a viable start in most formats this week.

McCluster nets 59 yards

News: Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster was fairly productive in Week 15 against the Raiders. McCluster hauled in a team-high seven receptions for 57 yards in the 15-0 win. He had a long of 31 yards -- which was Kansas City's longest play from scrimmage -- and was targeted 10 times by Brady Quinn.
Analysis: McCluster's seven receptions on the day were a season high as the 24-year-old is being asked to take on a larger role on offense with Dwayne Bowe now out for the year. However, with Quinn under center, that could be easier said than done as the Chiefs look like a mess on offense right now. With most leagues heading into their Championship Week, McCluster should not be starting in most formats when the Chiefs take on the Colts in Week 15.

Injuries knock out McCluster

News: Kansas City wide receiver Dexter McCluster left in the first half of Week 12 against Denver to be evaluated for a head and neck injury, The Associated Press reports. It was unclear when McCluster was hurt, but the injury was announced at the beginning of the second half. McCluster had been active over the first 30 minutes, running twice for 23 yards and catching a game-high four passes for 21 yards. He was questionable to return.
Analysis: The Chiefs chose to go thin at wide receiver for Sunday's game as Steve Breaston and Devon Wylie, the best two options to replace McCluster in the slot, were both inactive. McCluster has been more active in the passing game this season, but his showing Sunday marked just the first time he finished with more rushing yards than receiving. Fantasy owners should continue to view him as a low-end option in deeper formats regardless of his health moving forward.

McCluster has three catches

News: Chiefs receiver Dexter McCluster had three catches for 37 yards Sunday against the Bengals in Week 11. He had three targets in the game.
Analysis: McCluster is a low-end Fantasy option in the majority of leagues. Ignore him in most formats heading into Week 12 against Denver.

Two grabs for McCluster in Week 10

News: Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster had another quiet performance in Week 10 against the Chiefs. He caught two passes for 18 yards in the 16-13 overtime loss.
Analysis: McCluster continues to see minimal work on offense for the Chiefs and has caught just four passes for 36 yards over the previous two contests. While he has the potential to be a viable option in Fantasy, continue to ignore the 24-year-old in the majority of formats at this point.

McCluster can’t find room

News: Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster was limited to just 34 all-purpose yards on six touches Thursday against the Chargers in Week 9. McCluster brought in just two of the six passes thrown his way in the game, for 17 yards. He added another 17 yards on four carries, with a long run of 13 yards. The Chiefs fell in the game, 31-13.
Analysis: McCluster had posted a pair of solid games prior, with six catches in each. He also scored his first touchdown of the season in Week 9, so this was definitely a letdown. McCluster is still developing as a receiver and runner, so the Chiefs are not quite sure how to put him to use consistently. The Chiefs will take on the Steelers in Week 10, a team that is allowing 18.7 Fantasy points per game to opposing wide receivers this season. McCluster remains too inconsistent to rely on outside of the deepest Fantasy formats for the upcoming matchup.

Dexter McCluster

McCluster searching for another TD

News: Kansas City wide receiver Dexter McCluster heads into Week 9 on Thursday at San Diego with a quarterback situation in turmoil. The Chiefs were starting Matt Cassel earlier in the year before benching him in favor of Brady Quinn. Quinn suffered an injury to his head last week and it may be Cassel time again Week 9. That said, neither quarterback has done very well this season. The good news for McCluster is that he will be facing a Chargers defense that hasn't exactly been dominant against the pass. The Chargers are allowing the ninth-most Fantasy points per game to opposing wide receivers but haven't allowed a 100-yard performance since Week 5 against the Saints.
Analysis: McCluster is coming off his best game of the season last week through all the poor QB play as he caught six passes for 54 yards and his first touchdown of the year against the Raiders. That was by far his best game since netting 82 yards receiving Week 1 of the season. McCluster faced the Chargers Week 4 and caught just two passes for 6 yards with Cassel throwing the passes. McCluster is hit or miss and the K.C. QB situation is ugly enough that we'd error on the side of him missing in the Week 9 Thursday night game. He is only recommended in the deepest of formats where you have exhausted all other viable options.

McCluster finds the end zone

News: Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster was able to haul in his first touchdown reception of the season in Week 8 against the Raiders. McCluster was on the receiving end of a 10-yard scoring strike from Matt Cassel late in the fourth quarter of the 26-16 defeat. He finished with six receptions for 54 yards in the loss.
Analysis: McCluster was finally able to find the end zone Sunday afternoon and was one of the few Chiefs who actually turned in a decent performance. The 24-year-old has now turned in two straight productive performances as he has 12 catches for 93 yards and a score over his last two games after hauling in just 15 catches for 148 yards over his first five contests. However, McCluster's overall production has been way too inconsistent to trust as a starter most weeks. Consider him merely a low-end flex option when Kansas City travels to San Diego Thursday night in Week 9.

McCluster looking to break out

News: Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster will looking to get himself going in Week 8 against the Raiders. McCluster enters the contest averaging just 31.8 yards receiving per game on the year and has yet to find the end zone. Oakland is allowing an averaged of 255 passing yards per contest and have surrendered 11 TDs through the air while yielding an average of 21 Fantasy points to opposing WRs on the season.
Analysis: McCluster has been a huge disappointment thus far but may be on the verge of turning things around -- at least this week. After totaling just nine receptions for 73 yards over his previous three games, he hauled in six receptions on eight targets with Brady Quinn under center last week. Quinn has been named the starter for this week's contest as well and hopefully will once again look to find McCluster. While the 24-year-old's speed makes him an intriguing option, McCluster should not be starting in the majority of formats heading into Week 8.

Quinn looks to McCluster often

News: Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster led the Chiefs with six receptions on Sunday, but gained just 39 yards in a 38-10 blowout loss to the Bucs. McCluster was targeted eight times.
Analysis: This may end up meaning very little if Matt Cassel returns in Week 8 as the starting quarterback. But, if the Chiefs opt to stick with Brady Quinn, McCluster could see a bump in value, as he was second on the team in targets, behind Dwayne Bowe. With the Chiefs on bye next week, McCluster -- along with every other Kansas City player -- should be benched. But if Quinn remains QB in Week 8, McCluster will have some value in very deep (14 teams or more) leagues as a flex.

McCluster looks to right ship vs. Bucs

News: Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster has been in a free-fall since his Week 1 breakout against the Falcons. In that game, he caught six passes for 82 yards. Since then, his receptions have gone down from six, to four, to three, to two, to zero in Week 5.
Analysis: It's a bit of a pattern for McCluster to mix in a string of disappointing games with a few solid ones, and there's not much of a history to divine any meaning from it all. He had been dealing with an elbow issue, but that hasn't been brought up since late September. McCluster used to have value in leagues that counted return yards, but he is no longer handling kickoffs or punts, so he can't even help in those categories. Even though Tampa Bay gives up the most passing yards per game in the NFL, Fantasy owners looking to the Chiefs for some value may be better served going the Jon Baldwin route, as McCluster -- while capable of having a very big game -- cannot be trusted to do much more than catch a few passes for 30-ish yards. He can be benched in most formats.

McCluster held off stat sheet

News: Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster was held off the stat sheet for the first time this season Week 5 against the Ravens. McCluster had his only catch -- a 25-yard reception -- called back because of an offensive pass interference call on Dwayne Bowe.
Analysis: It's been a terrible decline for McCluster ever since he had six catches for 82 yards Week 1. He has since followed that up with 32 yards Week 2, 28 yards Week 3, 6 yards Week 4 and zero yards Week 5. Maybe it's now time for him to start trending upward again, but Fantasy owners can leave McCluster out of active lineups heading into Week 6 at Tampa Bay.

McCluster to fly past Ravens?

News: Next up for wide receiver Dexter McCluster and the Chiefs in Week 5 is a showdown at home with Baltimore. McCluster is averaging 30.9 receiving yards per game in 16 career home contests. Wide receivers are averaging 211.3 receiving yards and 23.5 Fantasy points per week against the Ravens. Wide receivers have totaled two touchdowns in four games against Baltimore.
Analysis: McCluster has been trending downward since opening the season with six catches for 82 yards in Week 1 against the Falcons. He had four catches for 32 yards Week 2, three catches for 28 yards Week 3 and two catches for 6 yards Week 4. Although, it's not a fair assessment since McCluster was hurt early in the second half Week 3 and came into Week 4 as questionable because of the elbow injury. The Chiefs are trying to find creative ways to get McCluster involved on offense, but the team's offense is so inconsistent right now that McCluster isn't a recommended Fantasy start for Week 5.

McCluster limited against Chargers

News: Kansas City wide receiver Dexter McCluster, who may have been hampered by a lingering elbow issue, was held in check during the Week 4 loss against the Chargers. McCluster finished the game with two catches for 6 yards on four targets from quarterback Matt Cassel.
Analysis: McCluster had a big game Week 1 against Atlanta but has done little since. The elbow injury may have been an issue against the Chargers. That said, McCluster hasn't been featured in his porous offense and is not a recommended start heading into Week 5 against the tough Baltimore defense.

McCluster active for Chiefs

News: Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster (elbow) is active and healthy for the Week 4 game against the Chargers. McCluster continues to deal with a lingering elbow issue, but it shouldn't limit him against the Chargers. The versatile 24-year-old has posted 142 yards on 13 carries out of the backfield for a sizzling 10.9 yards per attempt through three games.
Analysis: McCluster continues to be utilized in different ways than lining up as a conventional receiver, which has actually produced only one reception for a grand total of 5 yards. The Chargers have attempted to bottle up McCluster in the backfield as he's gained just 45 yards on 15 carries during their two meetings last season. He also hauled in eight passes for 45 yards. Now that he's active, he can be starting in some PPR leagues. He's not really a recommended start outside of that, however.

McCluster's status still uncertain

News: Kansas City wide receiver Dexter McCluster was listed as questionable on the team's injury report for Week 4 against San Diego while dealing with a lingering elbow issue. McCluster was limited in practice over the past week after originally suffering the injury last Sunday against New Orleans. The versatile 24-year-old has posted 142 yards on 13 carries out of the backfield for a sizzling 10.9 yards per attempt through three games.
Analysis: McCluster continues to be utilized in different ways than lining up as a conventional receiver, which has actually produced only one reception for a grand total of five yards. The Chargers have attempted to bottle up McCluster in the backfield as he's gained just 45 yards on 15 carries during their two meetings last season. He also hauled in eight passes for 45 yards, but his status for this Sunday is up in the air. McCluster limited again Thursday

News: Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster (elbow), who was injured Week 3 against the Saints, was limited in practice Thursday for a second straight day. Kansas City hosts AFC West rival San Diego Week 4.
Analysis: The fact McCluster keeps practicing likely signals he has a good chance to play Sunday. The Chiefs have used McCluster in a variety of ways this season, but he gets most of his reps in the passing game. We are still waiting for a breakout run from McCluster, who has low-end Fantasy appeal. He is best used in PPR formats.

McCluster practices in limited capacity

News: Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster, who was injured Week 3 against the Saints, was limited in practice Wednesday, according to The Kansas City Star. Kansas City hosts AFC West rival San Diego Week 4.
Analysis: It's amazing McCluster is able to practice days after he sustained what appeared to be a serious injury. Well, it seems McCluster has a chance to suit up Week 4, so continue to keep tabs on his progress. The Chiefs have used McCluster in a variety of ways this season, but he gets most of his reps in the passing game.
