Mare hits four FGs
News: Bears kicker Olindo Mare, signed by the Bears in mid-December when Robbie Gould went down, made four of his five field goal attempts in Sunday's 26-24 win over the Lions.
Analysis: Mare hit from 40, 33, 28, and 20 yards out, while sending a 43-yard attempt wide right. The 39-year-old still has some life left in his leg, and the Bears were willing to trust him in a playoff run with Gould out, so there is low-end Fantasy value there. With Chicago struggling to score touchdowns in the red zone Sunday, Mare saw plenty of chances. Still, without a home for most of 2012, Mare will have little value -- if any at all -- heading into 2013.

Mare has lone FG blocked
News: Bears kicker Olindo Mare had a quiet performance in Week 16 against the Cardinals. He made four extra points but had his lone field goal blocked in the 28-13 win. He attempted a 20-yarder in the fourth quarter but Adrian Wilson got in the way of it, and Justin Bethel returned it 82 yards for a touchdown.
Analysis: Mare has made 2 of 3 field goals since being signed by the Bears but their lack of offense hinders his appeal in Fantasy. Continue to ignore the 39-year-old in the majority of formats heading into Week 17 against the Lions.

Mare helps in team debut
News: Bears kicker Olindo Mare connected on two field goals and an extra point during Chicago's 21-13 loss to Green Bay in Week 15. Mare, who replaced Robbie Gould after he was placed on injured reserve, booted two kicks of 34 yards each during the game.
Analysis: The Bears represent Mare's fifth team in the NFL, but his first this season after he was dropped by Carolina during the preseason. He was drilled 81.2 percent of his field-goal attempts during his career and should be viewed as a low-end option for Week 16 at Arizona.

Mare lands in Chicago
News: The Bears announced Tuesday kicker Robbie Gould was placed on injured reserve with a calf injury. The Bears signed Olindo Mare to take over Gould's placekicking responsibilities.
Analysis: Mare has been out of work since losing out on the Panthers' placekicker job this preseason. He struggled with his accuracy last season, making just 22 of 28 field goals for Carolina. However, he has a wealth of NFL experience, which is why the Bears brought him on board. The Bears could give Mare regular scoring chances, but he remains a very low-end Fantasy option heading into Week 15.

Mare dropped by Panthers
News: The Carolina Panthers made their first round of cuts Monday and waived the following players: kicker Olindo Mare; wide receivers Darvin Adams, Michael Avila, Brenton Bersin and Rico Wallace; running backs Lyndon Rowells and Josh Vaughan; defensive lineman Eric Norwood and tight end Greg Smith.
Analysis: Mare is a relatively surprising release as he was trimmed just one season into his four-year, $12 million deal. But the Panthers will instead turn to Justin Medlock after he converted all three of his field-goal attempts in the team's first three preseason games. Mare, meanwhile, struggled last season and converted just 78.6 percent of his field goals. He should remain untouched in all Fantasy formats at this point.

Carolina PK battle carries on
News: Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Tuesday the kicker battle between incumbent starter Olindo Mare and challenger Justin Medlock will be decided after the third preseason game. Rivera said both kickers have done well thus far.
Analysis: The Panthers brought in Medlock after Mare converted just 78.6 percent of his field goals in 2011 -- his lowest average since 2007. Whether Mare keeps his job or loses it to Medlock, neither kicker will be more than a low-end Fantasy option on Draft Day.

Mare totals five points
News: Panthers kicker Olindo Mare kicked one field goal (41 yards) and added two extra points against the Saints in Week 17.
Analysis: Mare will compete to stay with the Panthers in 2012 and might be worth using as a one-week replacement next season.

Mare benefits from high-scoring day
News: Panthers K Olindo Mare had a productive performance in Week 16 against the Buccaneers. He made both of his field goal attempts and converted six extra points in the 48-16 win. He made his field goals from distances of 19 and 21 yards.
Analysis: After making just one field goal over the last three games, Mare make it up for owners on Saturday and could have saved his job in the process. The Panthers recently brought in rookie Adi Kunalic to compete with the veteran but he has remained the game-day kicker. That shouldn't change in Week 17 against the Saints so continue to view Mare as a low-end Fantasy K.

Mare still competing for PK job
News: Panthers PK Olindo Mare won Round 1 of his practice challenge against rookie Adi Kunalic. Mare converted four extra points Sunday against the Texans. Kunalic was signed last week to compete against Mare. Will the competition continue this week? Absolutely, coach Ron Rivera said Monday.
Analysis: Perhaps keeping the competition on Mare will help him focus, so it's not surprising that Rivera isn't changing his stance. Mare isn't the most reliable kicker in the NFL, but kicking for a decent Panthers offense, he's usable in Fantasy. He'll typically hit a field goal or two, putting him closer to seven or eight points than three or four. He has to worry about Kunalic breathing down his neck, though, so treat him as a No. 2 Fantasy K for Week 16 against the Buccaneers.

Mare doesn't get FG opportunity
News: Panthers K Olindo Mare, who had to compete to keep his job in practice during the week after missing a crucial field goal Week 14 against the Falcons, didn't get to attempt a field goal Week 15 at Houston. He connected on all four of his extra point opportunities, however.
Analysis: Mare isn't the most reliable kicker in the NFL, but kicking for a decent Panthers offense, he's usable in Fantasy. He'll typically hit a field goal or two, putting him closer to seven or eight points than three or four. He has to worry about Adi Kunalic breathing down his neck, though, so treat him as a No. 2 Fantasy K for Week 16 against the Buccaneers.

Mare gets one more chance
News: The Panthers put K Adi Kunalic on the inactives list for Week 15 at Houston. That makes Olindo Mare the team's kicker for at least one more week. Kunalic was brought in to give the struggling Mare some competition, but Mare will be used now as the team's kicker for their tilt with the Texans.
Analysis: Even though Mare gets to play at least one more game, he is still a risky play in Fantasy. He is only worth starting in the deepest of leagues for Week 15.

Mare might be out of job
News: Panthers coach Ron Rivera said the team could replace K Olindo Mare, who missed another short field goal during a Week 14 loss against the Falcons. We'll evaluate that and we go through this. This is a very veteran kicker, a very experienced guy that's had a couple of misses. Very unfortunate, Rivera said. The timing of the misses are about as bad as they get, obviously. We've got to think this through and go through the process, and make sure we make good decisions.
Analysis: Mare has been great on kickoffs this season, with his 44 touchbacks ranking second in the league. However, he is near the bottom of the NFL with his 76 percent conversion rate on kickoffs, prompting the Panthers to perhaps look at other options. Mare has minimal Fantasy appeal to begin with, so if he loses his starting job, then it will make a small ripple in Fantasy circles.

Miss puts Mare in doghouse
News: Panthers K Olindo Mare had a chance to give his team a two-point lead on a 36-yard field goal in the fourth quarter Week 14 against the Falcons, and he missed it. He still had three extra points in the contest, but that missed field goal was what caught coach Ron Rivera's attention. We have to sit down and visit with him, Rivera said. You cant do that, you really cant.
Analysis: Mare has had his share of misses over the years and isn't exactly known for being a clutch kicker. He had been fairly productive for Fantasy purposes in the weeks leading up to Week 14, though, scoring no fewer than eight points in any of his previous three games. He still lacks the consistency to serve as a starting kicker in most Fantasy leagues, however.

Mare watches team score five TDs
News: Carolina K Olindo Mare held the Panthers easily defeat Tampa Bay on Sunday of Week 13. That said, Mare only finished the game with eight points. He went 5 for 5 on extra points for the Panthers, but just 1 for 1 on field goals. Mare hit from 43 yards on the only field goal he attempted in the performance.
Analysis: The Panthers haven't exactly been setting the world on fire scoring the football. Mare hasn't topped double figures in Fantasy scoring since Week 7 against Washington. Carolina plays at home against the Falcons Week 14. Carolina met Atlanta back in Week 6 and Mare finished that game 1 for 1 on field goals with two PATs for a total of five points recorded. We expect a similar game this time around. Mare is just a No. 2 Fantasy K for Week 14.

Mare has one blocked
News: Panthers K Olindo Mare nailed field goal attempts from 40 and 41 yards in a Week 12 win over the Colts, but his 45-yard try in the closing seconds of the first half was blocked by DL Jamaal Anderson. Mare did convert all three of his extra-point attempts.
Analysis: Mare has already missed five field goal attempts this season, and his production in Fantasy has been erratic. While the Panthers provide him with plenty of opportunities to produce, there are more reliable options available in the vast majority of Fantasy formats.

Nine's fine for Mare
News: Panthers kicker Olindo Mare nailed two field goals (27, 31 yards) and three extra points in the team's Week 11 loss at Detroit.
Analysis: Mare is worth adding for Week 12 when the Cats scratch into Indy in what should be a fairly dominating offensive performance. Figure that Mare will get some chances to kick. If you need a kicker, look his way.

Mare misses another 50-yard FG
News: Panthers K Olindo Mare missed a 50-yard field goal Week 10 vs. Tennessee and is now 0 for 2 from 50-plus yards this season. He did convert a 29-yard field goal, but had no extra-point attempts in a 30-3 loss.
Analysis: Mare has had three games this season with 10-plus points, and the Panthers have a pretty productive offense. But Mare is all over the place with his point production that he remains a No. 2 Fantasy kicker heading into Week 11 at Detroit.

Mare misses critical kick
News: Panthers K Olindo Mare had a chance to get his team into overtime, but his missed 31-yard field goal attempt iced a victory for the visiting Vikings in Week 8. Mare's miss, which was his only field goal attempt on the afternoon, came with just 29 seconds left in regulation, and it left the Panthers with a 24-21 loss. Mare did convert all three of his extra point attempts.
Analysis: Mare is not having a great season overall, though he has produced enough to be worth considering as a bye-week replacement. However, do not look to Mare to fill in for Week 9, as the Panthers themselves will have a bye.

Mare goes off for 15 Week 7 points
News: Panthers K Olindo Mare had a nice game in Week 7 as Carolina defeated the Redskins. Mare nailed two 45-yard field goals in the game and they set a season-high for the veteran kicker. Mare finished the Week 7 game with 15 total points as he went 4 for 4 on field goals and 3 for 3 on extra points in the contest.
Analysis: Mare recorded his best game this season on Sunday as his previous high in scoring had been 11 points accomplished twice on the year. The Panthers have not really showcased an excellent offense and that has translated into mediocre efforts week in and week out from Mare until the Week 7 game. Heading into Week 8 against Minnesota, the Vikings have been allowing hordes of Fantasy points to opposing kickers on the year. After Mare's big game, Fantasy owners can feel free in targeting him for a start in any format against the Vikings.

Mare again has modest numbers
News: Panthers K Olindo Mare, who scored only three points against the Saints in Week 5, wasn't much more productive at Atlanta in Week 6. He finished with five points, kicking a 42-yard field goal in the first quarter and two extra points later in the contest.
Analysis: Mare has scored six points or fewer in four of his first six games. Granted, he has a couple of 11-point efforts mixed in there, but the bottom line is he isn't nearly consistent enough to start in most Fantasy leagues. The Panthers offense is productive enough that Mare's output could improve in the weeks ahead, but for now, he's nothing more than a bye-week replacement. The Panthers host the Redskins in Week 7.

Mare held to three points Week 5
News: Panthers K Olindo Mare had one of four extra-point attempts blocked in a Week 5 loss to the Saints. Mare didn't even attempt a field goal during a three-point afternoon.
Analysis: Mare missed two field goals in Week 4 and now had another kick blocked, but his job isn't in jeopardy yet. In fact, he has surprisingly has had a lot of scoring chances early in the season thanks to the Panthers moving the football behind rookie QB Cam Newton. We wouldn't call Mare a high-end Fantasy kicker, but he can be a serviceable low-end option in deeper formats. The Panthers play the Falcons in Week 6.

Mare misses two field goals
News: Carolina K Olindo Mare missed a 52-yard field goal and had another field goal attempt blocked in the Week 4 loss in Chicago on Sunday. Mare finished the game 3 for 5 on field goals with a long of 39 yards. He added two extra points and finished with 11 points overall in the game.
Analysis: Mare entered the Week 4 game having gone 5 for 5 on field goals on the year and he's now 8 for 10 with the two misses. One of those two misses was not really his fault as it was blocked, and the other was over 50 yards. Heading into Week 5 against the Saints, New Orleans gives up plenty of points and yardage on a weekly basis. Mare should have a solid opportunity to put up points against a team that entered Week 4 having allowed the fifth-most Fantasy points per game to opposing kickers. Consider Mare a solid start in all Fantasy leagues for the Week 5 game against New Orleans.

Mare hits a couple more field goals
News: Panthers K Olindo Mare, who hit three field goals in Week 2, connected for two more -- a 32-yarder and a 35-yarder -- Week 3 against the Jaguars. He didn't have an extra point in the contest.
Analysis: Mare scored in double figures in Week 2, but overall, his Fantasy production hasn't been so great, which is kind of surprising considering the Panthers offense has been pretty good under rookie QB Cam Newton. Mare is worth watching, but he's just a No. 2 Fantasy option at Chicago in Week 4.

Mare scores in double figures
News: Carolina K Olindo Mare had a solid game in the Week 2 loss against Green Bay. Mare was called upon to kick three field goals and he connected on all of them for a long of 33 yards. Mare added two extra points and finished with 11 points overall in the 30-23 loss.
Analysis: After an underwhelming performance in Week 1 due mostly to not getting many opportunities, Mare had a huge game in Week 2 against the Packers. What does that mean for Fantasy owners? It means the jury is still out. The Panthers can clearly score some points, and Mare has the ability to connect when given opportunities. Still, at this point, there are still better options available to start in Week 3 against Jacksonville.

Mare quiet in Week 1
News: Panthers K Olindo Mare was not much of a factor in Week 1 against the Cardinals. Mare did not attempt a field goal in the 28-21 defeat, finishing with just three extra points.
Analysis: Mare wasn't needed on Sunday but many feel like this is a preview of what to expect from the veteran this season. Carolina's offense will likely struggle at times, which will likely limit his chances for field-goal attempts. Fantasy owners should consider Mare merely a low-end option in the majority of formats heading into Week 2.

Panthers sign kicker Mare
News: The Panthers have agreed to a four-year contract with kicker Olindo Mare. The deal, according to ESPN, is reportedly worth $12 million over four years with $4 million guaranteed. Mare is expected to replace John Kasay in Carolina.
Analysis: Mare didn't boot a ton of field goals for the Seahawks thanks in part to their sluggish offense, and the same could happen to him in Carolina. To wit, Kasay attempted just over 28 field goal attempts on average over his last five years. Mare isn't worth drafting; you could always look to waivers for him if you need a kicker during the season.

Mare perfect for Seattle
News: Seattle K Olindo Mare converted his lone field-goal attempt and three extra-point tries in the Seahawks' 35-24 loss to Chicago in Sunday's NFC Divisional Playoff game. Mare booted a 30-yard field goal late in the third quarter to provide Seattle its only points in the first three quarters of Sunday's game.
Analysis: Mare didn't receive much work against the Bears but made the most of his limited opportunities. His field goal kept him perfect from 30-39 yards this season and was the seventh consecutive attempt he has converted. Mare is a normally-reliable kicker but will be 38 years old by the start of training camp. Consider him a mid-level Fantasy kicker in 2011 drafts.

Mare has busy day
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare was a busy man in Saturday's Wild Card game against the Saints. The veteran kicker booted all five of his extra point attempts and nailed both his field goals in Seattle's 41-36 win over New Orleans. His kicks were from 29- and 39-yards respectively.
Analysis: Mare and the Seahawks advance in the playoffs, but Fantasy owners shouldn't pay too much attention to him. He's a low-end kicker for playoff leagues and should be considered a mid-level Fantasy kicker heading into 2011. He finished the regular season going 25 for 30 on his field goal attempts and booted all 31 of his PATs for a total of 106 points.

Mare boots three FGs in win
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare was good on all three field goals he attempted in the Week 17 win over the Rams, including a 34-yarder in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. He also connected on the only extra point in the game on his way to 10 points.
Analysis: Mare has just one made field goal in his three previous games heading into Sunday night, so the three kick performance ends his regular season on a high note. He remains one of the most accurate NFL kickers and he will likely get another chance to prove it with the 'Hawks in 2011. Mare should be considered a mid-level Fantasy option heading into the new season.

Mare good to go
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare (back) is active for the Week 17 game against the Rams. He was listed as probable heading into the matchup.
Analysis: We had little doubts that Mare would miss Sunday's crucial divisional game. He has had some good games in 2010, but lately Mare hasn't done much. He has just one made field goal in his last three games and eight points overall in that span. With Charlie Whitehurst expected to start at QB in Week 17, we aren't sure Mare will get many scoring chances, rendering him a low-end Fantasy option.

Analysis: We had little doubts that Mare would miss Sunday's crucial divisional game, and unless he suffers a setback, he will be on the field. Mare dealing with back injury
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare (back) did not practice Wednesday as his team prepares for Week 17 against the Rams. Mare has not missed a game this season. He kicked one field goal and no extra points in Week 4 against the Rams.
Analysis: Fantasy owners should only get concerned about Mare's status if the Seahawks bring in another kicker before Sunday. Otherwise, Mare will handle the placekicking duties. He has had some good games in 2010, but lately Mare hasn't done much. He has just one made field goal in his last three games and eight points overall in that span. Mare doesn't get a chance
News: Seattle kicker Olindo Mare only scored one point in the Week 16 loss to the Buccaneers. He did not attempt a field goal on the day, but hit his only extra point attempted. The Seahawks did score another touchdown, but they elected to go for two points because of the large deficit they faced.
Analysis: Mare was waiting all afternoon for a chance, but Seattle's offense put up a dreadful effort on the road in Tampa Bay. They did not even rack up 200 yards in the defeat. The 'Hawks offense is among the most inconsistent in the NFL, and Mare's value suffers from that. Consider him to be a low-end Fantasy potion.

One and done for Mare
News: Seattle kicker Olindo Mare connected on his only field-goal attempt and added an extra-point in the Seahawks' 34-18 loss to Atlanta in Week 15. Mare's recent limited action continued and he converted on a 38-yard attempt and is now 3 for 5 in his last four games.
Analysis: Another slow day for Mare, who has attempted one field goal or less in eight games this season. The veteran kicker didn't come off the sideline at all in the second half as Seattle converted a two-point attempt following their fourth-quarter touchdown. With the offense perhaps in the midst of a quarterback change, you could find better Fantasy options than Mare for Week 16.

Hit and miss for Mare
News: Seattle kicker Olindo Mare recorded four extra-points and 1 of 2 field goals to help the Seahawks secure a 31-14 victory over Carolina in Week 14. Mare connected on a 24-yard kick in the second quarter but also pushed a 47-yard attempt wide right early in the fourth quarter.
Analysis: Aside from the miss, it was an easy day for Mare as the offense -- particularly Marshawn Lynch -- did most of the work Sunday. Mare's miss was his first from 40-plus yards this season and snapped a string of five consecutive field goals in the last two games for Mare. With San Francisco looming in Week 14, consider Mare a No. 2 Fantasy K.

Six points for Mare in Week 12
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare only attempted one field goal in Week 12 against the Chiefs but still had a productive game. He nailed a 43-yarder in the second quarter and connected on three extra points, finishing with six points in the 42-24 loss.
Analysis: Mare has been a busy kicker for the Seahawks of late but Week 12 marked the first time in two games that he did not post double-digit points. Still, he is 20 for 23 in field-goal attempts this season and a perfect 21-21 in PATs. With the lowly Panthers up next on the schedule, continue to view Mare as a low-end Fantasy K heading into Week 13.

Analysis: Mare has been getting a lot of work this year as Seattle has struggled to finish off drives. He's a good source of field goals in Fantasy leagues, which makes him a low-end kicker. Seattle hosts Kansas City in Week 12, so Mare could get another game with a lot of action.

Another high-scoring week for Mare
News: After scoring just one point in his last outing, Seahawks K Olindo Mare got back on track in a big way in Week 10 against the Cardinals. He made 5 of 6 field goals and converted all three of his PATs in the 36-18 win. Mare connected from 41, 34, 19, 23 and 19 to finish with 18 points.
Analysis: Despite his one miss in Week 10, Mare continues to be one of the NFL's most curate kickers. It also helps that Seattle's offense has sputtered out in the red zone of late. The 37-year-old has made 15 of 18 kicks so far this season and should continue to be viewed as a low-end Fantasy K heading into Week 11 against the Saints.

News: Seahwaks K Olindo Mare did not attempt a field goal in Week 9 against the Giants. Seattle scored just seven points in the loss and had trouble moving the ball all game. Sunday marked the third time this season Mare had not attempted a field goal. He did make his lone extra-point attempt and finished with one point.
Analysis: Mare has been one of the NFL's most curate kickers as of late, but Seattle's offense isn't giving him many opportunities. He is 10 for 12 with a long of 51 yards on the season. However, the Seahawks have managed just 10 points over their last two games. Consider him a low-end Fantasy K heading into Week 10.

Mare snaps FG streak
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare missed a 51-yard field goal attempt late in the second quarter of the Week 8 game against Oakland. The miss ended a streak of 30 consecutive made field goals that went back to the third game of last season. Mare would go on to miss another field goal in the game, but was able to connect on a 47-yarder in the fourth quarter. He tied a team record with five field goals in Week 7.
Analysis: Mare has been one of the NFL's most curate kickers as of late, but Sunday was a major setback. The 37-year-old will continue to have some opportunities as long as the 'Hawks are winning, but that could be a tough task in Week 9 against the streaking Giants.

Mare extends streak in busy game
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare did a ton of kicking in Week 7 against the Cardinals. He went 5 for 5 in field goals and connected on one PAT to finish with 16 points in the 22-10 win. He had back-to-back kicks negated in the third quarter but hit from 51 yards after Seattle stopped being penalized. Mare also extended his streak to 30 field goals without a miss, since missing a pair last year against Chicago and then drawing the ire of former head coach Jim Mora. "Going back to Chicago last year, those two kicks, it was windy, but I should have made those, too," Mare said. "You don't have many excuses. You're out there to do that, and when you get on a roll like that it shows."
Analysis: Mare had only attempted four field goals entering Week 7 but had a productive game on a day where it was gray and rainy in Seattle. The Seahawks have been playing better of late, giving the 37-year-old more opportunities to score. Sunday's game should put him on the Fantasy map and Mare might be worth considering in Week 8 against the Raiders for owners with their kicker on a bye.

Mare held without a field goal
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare kicked three extra points in a Week 6 win at Chicago but was held without a field goal.
Analysis: Mare has just three field goals in the last four games and has been shut out in two of those. The Seahawks offense just can't provide Mare with enough chances for him to be of any use in Fantasy play at this time. Continue to ignore him in Week 7 vs. the Cardinals.

Mare held to one field goal
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare provided all the offense for Seattle in a 20-3 Week 4 loss at St. Louis when he booted a 22-yard field goal.
Analysis: The Seattle offense isn't very good, and so Mare's chances of putting up many Fantasy points in any given week aren't very good. You're better off staying away from Mare in Fantasy play when Seattle comes back from their Week 5 bye. They visit Chicago in Week 6.

Mare boots a pair of FGs
News: Seattle K Olindo Mare hit a pair of 23-yard field goals in Sunday's win over San Diego. He also converted all three of his extra point chances.
Analysis: Mare had a productive day at the office, but can't be counted on to produce Fantasy points on a consistent basis. With the offense still trying to figure things out, Mare won't get too many options to score, unless Leon Washington continues to burn opponents on special teams. Heading into Week 4, Mare can be viewed as a low-end Fantasy kicker.

Mare doesn't get much action
News: Seattle K Olindo Mare connected on both his extra points in Week 2. He did not attempt a field goal and had his onside kick sail out of bounds late in the fourth quarter.
Analysis: Mare didn't have much to do on Sunday against the Broncos, which obviously hurts any Fantasy value he has. Heading into Week 3, the Seahawks take on a high-powered Chargers team. If Seattle's offense can get going, Mare may see more action, but as of right now he should be viewed as a low-end Fantasy kicker.

News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare kicked a 35-yard field goal during Week 1 against the 49ers. His field goal capped off a 10-play, 57-yard drive in the fourth quarter to put Seattle up 31-6. He also was a perfect 4 for 4 on extra points.
Analysis: Mare is a solid NFL kicker, but because the Seahawks offense will most likely not generate a of points, consider him a No. 2 Fantasy kicker heading into his Week 2 matchup at Denver.

Mare returns for Seahawks
News: Seattle kicker Olindo Mare was able to return for Saturday's preseason game at Minnesota after sitting out the previous game with a calf strain. Mare was 2 of 3 on field goals with a long of 38 and made his lone extra point.
Analysis: Mare should be fine for the start of the season, and we consider him a No. 2 Fantasy kicker. The Seattle offense doesn't generate enough points for Mare to be considered a No. 1 option, but he can be a useful bye-week replacement during the year.

Mare sits out loss to Packers
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare sat out Saturday's preseason loss to the Packers with a calf strain. Clint Stitser took his place.
Analysis: Mare must be kicking himself at the moment as the starting job under offensive-minded coach Pete Carroll would be his if he were healthy. While there are certainly better options out there, Mare is worth a look in deeper Fantasy leagues when he's actually on the field, but for now he's a major question mark.

Mare's calf could be issue
News: The Seahawks' signing of K Clint Stister on Tuesday indicates that Olindo Mare's calf injury could keep him out for a while. Mare made two field goals in Saturdays preseason game, but after two kickoffs P Jon Ryan assumed those duties.
Analysis: As long as Mare is healthy he will remain the starting kicker for the Seahawks, who should be better on offense in 2010. The Seattle offense should improve under new head coach Pete Carroll, and he brings an improved coaching staff with him in coordinator Jeremy Bates, offensive line coach Alex Gibbs and QB coach Jedd Fisch. We expect Seattle to play better with QB Matt Hasselbeck and the talent around him, but the Seahawks kicker in 2010 will just be a No. 2 Fantasy option. Since joining Seattle in 2008, Mare has missed just five field goals on 53 tries.

Mare overcomes calf injury, practices
News: Dolphins K Olindo Mare is back in action on Thursday after sitting out the past two days with a sore calf.
Analysis: Since joining Seattle in 2008, Mare has missed just five field goals on 53 tries. He has definitely improved his accuracy after having some awful seasons with the Dolphins and Saints. Mare has a big leg and has good accuracy past 40 yards, but we aren't sure what to expect of the Seahawks offense in 2010. Mare is not being drafted among the top 20 kickers in CBSSports.com leagues, so view him as nothing more than a low-end Fantasy kicker.

Mare held out with bad wheel
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare has been out of practice the past few days with a calf injury. There is no word yet on his availability for Saturday's game against the Titans, but it's hard to imagine the team will rush the 37-year-old back in the preseason.
Analysis: Mare is coming off the finest season of his career, making 24 of 26 kicks, ranking third in the NFL in percentage. He finished the season making a franchise record 21 straight attempts and added 22 touchbacks on kickoffs, fifth in the league. We're not huge fans of the Seahawks offense but do expect some positive changes as far as scheme goes. Mare is worth a look late in the deepest of leagues.

Seattle sticks Mare with franchise tag
News: The Seahawks announced they will use their franchise tag to retain control of placekicker Olindo Mare, the second time in recent seasons Seattle has used the tag on a kicker. The 36-year-old Mare will receive a tender for the average salary of the top five kickers in the NFL - $2.8 million - or a 20 percent salary increase.
Analysis: Mare is coming off the finest season of his career despite Seattle's struggles. He made 24 of 26 kicks, ranking third in the NFL in percentage, and is now 48 for 53 in his two seasons with the Seahawks. Mare finished the season making a franchise record 21 straight attempts and added 22 touchbacks on kickoffs, fifth in the league. Mare bounces back with seven points
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare, who had just one field goal over his last three games, scoring a total of six points, had two field goals -- a 20-yarder and a 35-yarder -- Week 17 against the Titans. He also had an extra point.
Analysis: The Seahawks had a rough finish to a mostly disappointing season, and Mare fell right in line. He isn't the most consistent kicker to begin with, so on an inconsistent offense, he's no more than a last resort in Fantasy. Think of him as such entering 2010, assuming he keeps his job in the offseason.

News: Seahawks PK Olindo Mare hit a 28-yard field goal and an extra point on Sunday in a Week 16 loss to the Packers. It was the first field goal that Mare had attempted in the past three weeks.

Mare doesn't attempt field goal Week 15
News: The Seahawks were embarrassed by the Bucs in Week 15 and kicker Olindo Mare was not able to even attempt a field goal in the loss. He finished 1 for 1 on PATs for one point.
Analysis: Mare has exactly two points in his last two games combined. He's connected on 18 straight field goals with a club-record 19th on the horizon. It didn't come on Sunday, however. Likely coming in Week 16 at Green Bay, we only consider Mare a No. 2 Fantasy option for that game.

Mare manages just a single PAT
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare made the only kick he attempted in a Week 14 loss to the Texans -- an extra point.
Analysis: The Seahawks did a whole lot of nothing on Sunday and Mare's owners paid the price. Just a field goal for Mare
News: Seahawks PK Olindo Mare nailed a 40-yard field goal in Week 11 at Minnesota. That's all he had as the Seahawks' offense was stymied by the Vikings defense.
Analysis: Mare isn't a particularly appealing kicker because the Seahawks' offense typically doesn't give him many opportunities. But if you like picking your kicker based on matchups, then consider him in Week 12 when the 'Hawks play at the Rams. He's usable but not a must-start by any stretch.

Analysis: Mare has made 16 field goals in nine games this season and has 22 points in his last two games. The Seahawks have definitely been improving offensively over their last few games, but they are still an unreliable team. Consider Mare a low-end Fantasy option for Week 11 against the Vikings.

Analysis: Mare was a solid pick-up for Week 9 as the Seahawks were facing a poor Lions defense in the game. Seattle won't likely score as many points Week 10 at Arizona as the Cardinals defense is a lot better than Detroit's. Think of Mare as a low-end Fantasy option for that game.

News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare managed his team's only points during a 27-3 loss to the Cardinals in Week 6 when he hit on a 28-yard field goal in the second quarter. It was his ninth field-goal conversion of the season.
Analysis: Mare is a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals since missing two crucial kicks in Week 3 against the Bears. He has managed to hold onto his job and we were expecting a good week for Mare since Arizona has a suspect defense at times. Unfortunately, Seattle struggled to move the ball after posting 41 points in Week 5. Mare is at best a low-end Fantasy option. The Seahawks don't play again until Week 8 against Dallas (bye in Week 7).

News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare has full faith in holder Jon Ryan and said both of his holds on the two missed field goals last week were perfect. "Jon is probably one of the best holders in the league," Mare said. "He's the best holder I've had."
Analysis: Mare has dealt with some heat from coach Jim Mora after missing two kicks that could have given the Seahawks a win against the Bears in Week 3, but the team has backed off threats of replacing the veteran kicker. Mare still Mora's man
News: Coach Jim Mora has recanted his blistering criticism of Olindo Mare. He now says the Seahawks will not have a new kicker this weekend at Indianapolis. Mora said Monday that he spoke with too much knee-jerk emotion less than 24 hours earlier, after Mare missed two field goals in a six-point loss to Chicago. Mora said following the loss that the Seahawks would look at making changes everywhere. He aimed some of his most pointed comments about Mare.
Analysis: Mare is 5 for 7 on field goals for the season thus far and has gone 6 of 6 on extra points for 21 points on the season. He actually had a solid Fantasy game in Week 3 with 13 points but it was the missed field goals everyone will remember most. Mare angers coach with misses
News: Seahawks head coach Jim Mora was not happy with kicker Olindo Mare after the veteran missed two crucial kicks in a 25-19 loss to the Bears in Week 3. Mare angered Mora, but he did didn't indicate if it will force him to make a change at the position. "You should make those kicks, bottom line," he said. "We'll look at changes everywhere." Mare missed a 43-yard field goal before the half and a 34-yarder right after the half. Outside of those two misses, Mare hit four other field goals and finished with 13 points. He converted from 37, 39, 46 and 46.
Analysis: Mare said he can't recall another time when he's missed two field goals in a game like he did Sunday. "I'm more disappointed in the second one, because the wind was blowing that way," he said. "I should have played it more to the right." The Seahawks could always bring back Brandon Coutu if they aren't happy with the veteran Mare, but it seems they might give him another chance to make things right. For now, Mare is a low-end Fantasy option heading into Week 4 against the Colts.

Mare gets few opportunities Week 2
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare got only a field goal -- a 36-yarder -- and an extra point Week 2 at San Francisco, giving him only four points for the second straight week.
Analysis: The Seahawks offense struggled with the loss of QB Matt Hasselbeck to a rib injury in the first half, which helped limit Mare's opportunities. He's looking like just a No. 2 Fantasy K for Week 3 against the Bears, but with the Seahawks expected to improve this year, so could his standing in Fantasy.

Mare makes four extra points
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare did not officially attempt a field goal in Week 1 against the Rams. However, he did have a field goal attempt blocked and returned for a touchdown that was called back when the Rams were flagged for 12 men on the field, giving the Seahawks a first down. He converted all four of the extra points he attempted.
Analysis: The Seahawks' offense is expected to be improved in 2009 but Mare is still not considered to be too good of a Fantasy option. He is useful when the match-ups are good as a low-end No. 1 option but isn't too great of an option for Week 2 at San Francisco.

Mare money vs. the Rams?
News: Seattle PK Olindo Mare will boot against the Rams at home in his first game of the year. Mare beat out second-year kicker Brandon Coutu this preseason thanks to his stronger leg on kickoffs. The veteran made 10 of 11 field goals at Qwest Field, including three field goals and four extra points against the Rams last season. In fact, Mare booted 6 of 6 field goals and six extra points in two games against St. Louis.
Analysis: More of the same is expected in Week 1 as the Rams defense isn't expected to be very good, meaning that the Seahawks should stomp them and give Mare plenty of opportunities to post good numbers. We like Mare as a low-end No. 1 kicker this week, worth claiming off waivers if you're looking for a one-week helper. He will have some bad weeks, though, so he's tough to call a reliable kicker week in and week out.

Seahawks not yet sure about kicker
News: Olindo Mare was a Seahawk for a second consecutive preseason, even though younger, drafted kicker Brandon Coutu was also on the roster again. To which the 36-year-old accomplished veteran says, so what? "Well, I did sign a two-year contract," Mare said incredulously. Whether Seattle honors the second season of that deal or finally chooses Coutu, a seventh-round pick in 2008 so valued he was on the roster last season as a rare backup kicker, is one of the decisions the Seahawks must make by Saturday afternoon's deadline to set a 53-man roster for the regular season. Team president Tim Ruskell has said Seattle won't carry two kickers again this season.
Analysis: Mare made his only field goal try Thursday night in the preseason finale against Oakland. He also boomed a kickoff 5 yards into the end zone for a touchback, recalling his strength from last season, then sent another bounding over the head of a returner for a second touchback. Mare, a former Miami Dolphins standout who made 89 percent of his field goals for Seattle in 2008, finished three exhibitions 1 for 3 on field goals. A sore kicking knee kept him out of the preseason opener last month. Coutu's kickoffs reached the 7 and the 5 Thursday. Coutu was 4 for 5 on field goals in the preseason, including 1 of 2 from 50-plus yards.Which do the Seahawks value more: field goals, or field position from touchbacks? Whoever the Seahawks go with will be a No. 2 Fantasy K this season.

News: Seattle kickers Olindo Mare and Brandon Coutu went a combined 0 for 3 against the Chiefs in Saturday's preseason game, with Coutu coming up 10 yards short on a 50-yard attempt and Mare missing wide left from 51 and 27 yards. With the first round of cuts coming Tuesday, a front-runner has yet to emerge. "That wasn't a real positive for us," coach Jim Mora said. "That will probably come right down to the wire."

Analysis: If Mare was upset there was even a kicking competition going on in camp before, he'll be furious now. Still, it seems more and more likely the Seahawks will go with youth over experience. Mare upset with kicking competition
News: If it's true that an NFL placekicker is only as good as his last made field goal, Olindo Mare should be magnificent right now. The 36-year-old former Pro Bowl kicker and all-time leader in field goals and accuracy for the Miami Dolphins made 89 percent of his kicks last season, his first with the Seahawks as the replacement for the departed Josh Brown. That was 9 percent better than Mare's career average, and he wasn't even fully healthy. His leg remained weakened into last season from an injury sustained late in 2007 with New Orleans. Mare provided Seattle an even bigger boon -- and boom! -- on kickoffs. His 22 touchbacks tied for second-most in the league. So why in the name of Lou "The Toe" Groza did Seattle keep rookie kicker Brandon Coutu on the roster all last year? And why is Mare battling this unproven kid for his job in training camp? It's no surprise Mare isn't exactly getting a kick out of having to compete. He's months removed from going 24 for 30 on field goals -- many made in wind, rain and snow for a team that went 4-12 with a sputtering offense. "You would think after the year that I had that it would be a, you know, little easier decision," Mare said after practice Friday. "I feel like I was as good as anybody in the league last year, touchbacks, field goals -- we didn't do a bunch of short ones, either."
Analysis: Last week, Seahawks president Tim Ruskell made it clear 2008 might as well be 1908 when it comes to who will kick for Seattle this season. Then again, he's the guy who made Coutu the fourth kicker ever drafted by Seattle, and first since Brown in 2003. Coutu then made 7 of 7 kicks last preseason. "(Keeping two kickers) won't happen again this year," Ruskell said. "We'll go with one guy, and it'll be a nice battle to watch." Special teams coach Bruce DeHaven is more effusive. "I was certainly glad to have Brandon around, because he's just going to be a Cracker Jack kicker in this league, in my opinion," DeHaven said. "I think Brandon is more than ready to kick in the league. He's has the disadvantage right now of going against a guy that is really good, too." Friday, coach Jim Mora's message for Mare was a sobering example of life in the NFL. "Every year is a new year and a new competition," Mora said. "It's a really good competition. I imagine it will go all the way through preseason, and then we'll have a decision to make." Keep an eye on what happens with Mare and Coutu, but the winner will be a No. 2 Fantasy option at best and should not be drafted in any seasonal leagues.

Coutu ready for battle
News: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Seattle kicker Brandon Coutu has spent the offseason working with Morten Andersen before he returns to Seattle this month for training camp. Coutu made the Seahawks roster after being drafted in the seventh round last season, one of only two kickers selected. However, he was on the inactive list for every regular-season game as the Seahawks turned the kicking duties over to veteran Olindo Mare. "He's been kicking longer than I've been alive," Coutu said. "He's been kicking in the NFL longer than I've been alive. It's an opportunity to be able to come out and pick his brain and see how he got to where he got and learn everything I can to just absorb, listen and try to get better." Coutu has the intention of winning the kicking job. Mare has one year remaining on a two-year deal. "They wouldn't have kept me if they didn't see something in me," Coutu said. "I'm going to go in there and I know it's going to be an open competition, and I'm going to prepare myself the best I can."
Analysis: We still expect Mare to win the job, but Coutu will give it his best chance and should be prepared after working with Andersen. Keep an eye on what happens with Mare and Coutu, but the winner will be a No. 2 Fantasy option at best and should not be drafted in any seasonal leagues.

Mare, Coutu will do battle
News: According to a report in The Sports Xchange, Seattle kicker Olindo Mare is in the final year of a two-year contract and would like an extension. Mare performed well last season with 102 points and made 24-of-27 field goals. However, the Seahawks have kept around last year's sixth-round draft choice Brandon Coutu, and the two will once again compete for the starting kicking job in 2009.
Analysis: We still expect Mare to win the job, but don't be surprised if Coutu is also the starting kicker. Whoever is the No. 1 kicker in Seattle should be considered a No. 2 Fantasy option, so keep an eye on who wins the job to determine who has more Fantasy value.

News: Seahawks kicker Olindo Mare missed his only field goal attempt in Week 17 in Arizona. He converted three extra points to give him three points in the regular season finale.
Analysis: Mare had a disappointing season, along with the entire Seahawks organization. He finished with 102 points and made 24-of-27 field goals. The problem was the Seahawks did not get him enough attempts on a regular basis to be considered useful in Fantasy. Analysis: The Seahawks are taking on a Cardinals team in Week 17 that has looked downright pathetic the last two weeks after clinching a playoff spot. News: Seattle kicker Olindo Mare made all three field goals and no extra points Thursday at Dallas. His long field goal was 44 yards.
Analysis: Mare is a low-end kicker in Fantasy leagues at this point since the Seattle offense has struggled all year. Don't plan on using Mare in Week 14 against New England.

Mare totals 5 points Week 12
News: Seattle kicker Olindo Mare was 1-for-2 on field goals as Washington defeated the Seahawks in Week 12. Mare connected from 45 yards out in the 1st quarter and hit on both extra points for a total of five points.
Analysis: Mare hasn't seen double digits in scoring since getting 10 points against San Francisco five weeks ago. It could get better for Mare down the stretch, but don't hold your breath. He still has marginal Fantasy value as the Seahawks play the Cowboys in Dallas in Week 13 on Thanksgiving.

Mare boots just a pair of PATs
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare managed just two extra points during a 26-20 Week 11 loss to the Cardinals. Mare didn't attempt any field goals and the Seahawks also went for two points after one of their fourth-quarter scores.
Analysis: Mare has failed to attempt a field goal twice in the last three weeks and has just 10 points in three November games. Matt Hasselbeck did return to the Seattle lineup Week 11, but Mare still got just a few scoring attempts. It could get better for Mare down the stretch, but don't hold your breath. He still has marginal Fantasy value as the Seahawks play the Redskins Week 12.

News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare kicked field goals of 37 and 27 yards and one field goal in a Week 10 loss to the Dolphins.

Mare kicks one extra point
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare kicked just one extra point during a Week 9 loss to the Eagles. It was the first time all season he failed to attempt a field goal.
Analysis: Mare has managed one field goal three times this season and as you can see the Seattle offense has been inept for quite some time. Until Mare becomes a consistent Fantasy player, he has little to no Fantasy value heading into Week 10 against the Dolphins.

Mare perfect on field goals Sunday
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare made his only two field goals -- a 42-yarder and a 43-yarder -- Week 8 at San Francisco. He also hit four extra points.
Analysis: Mare has missed only one field-goal attempt this season, but since he plays for an inconsistent offense in Seattle, he is just a low-end Fantasy K. Treat him as such Week 9 against the Eagles.

News: Seattle kicker Olindo Mare had one field goal and one extra point Sunday at Tampa Bay. He also missed a field goal, and his one kick was from 26 yards.

Mare hits a fifty yarder
News: Seahawks kicker Olindo Mare converted a 50-yard field goal in Week 6 vs. Green Bay. He also made two field goals to finish with five points.
Analysis: Mare got some bonus points in leagues that reward long kicks, but he has just 11 points combined over two games. The Seahawks offense is in a sad state and that means less scoring chances for the kicker. In Week 7, that could be the case at a tough defense in Tampa.

Mare good for six points
News: Seahawks kicker Olindo Mare converted two field goals in Week 5 at the N.Y. Giants, giving him six points. They were the only points for Seattle in the game.
Analysis: Mare had 12 and 13 points in his two previous games and he is 9-for-9 on field goals this season. The Seahawks offense is a huge question mark right now, which means Mare's chances might be limited in Week 6 vs. Green Bay.

Mare racks up 13 points
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare kicked field goals of 28, 38 and 38 yards and converted four extra points in Seattle's 37-13 Week 3 win over the Rams.
Analysis: Mare has 25 points in the last two weeks and is looking like a very solid Fantasy kicker so far. However, kicking in windy Seattle is a crapshoot, so Mare is still a bit of risky option. In Week 4, the Seahawks are off, so don't pick him up off waivers this week.

Mare totals 12 points Sunday
News: Seattle K Olindo Mare totaled 12 points on Sunday against the 49ers but it was the kick he didn't have to make that cost the Seahawks the game. San Francisco won it in overtime and Mare never got the chance to try the game-winning field goal. He went 3-for-3 on 3-pointers as he hit from 51, 38 and 32 yards out. He was also 3-for-3 on extra points.
Analysis: The Seahawks offense is a huge question mark right now, which means Mare's chances might be limited. However, in Week 3 Seattle meets St. Louis and they have a terrible defense. That sweetens the deal for Mare owners. If you absolutely are desperate for a kicker in Week 3, go ahead and get Mare off the waiver wire.

Mare is Seattle's Week 1 kicker
News: Veteran Olindo Mare will be the Seattle Seahawks' kicker for Sunday's season opener in Buffalo over rookie Brandon Coutu. Mare spent 10 seasons with the Miami Dolphins. That meant 10 trips to Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y., to play the division rival Bills. That is a large reason why Seattle is going with Mare in Buffalo. "Olindo has got a little stronger leg, a little more experience. He's been around Buffalo for a number of years," Seahawks special teams coach Bruce DeHaven said after practice Monday. The Seahawks aren't likely to carry two kickers all season. They also value Mare for his kickoffs, which often soar deep into the end zone for touchbacks. That's something that rarely happened with Josh Brown, who left for St. Louis in the offseason as a free agent.
Analysis: Mare said Western New York's well-known, brutal winters aren't the only times the wind is a factor at a Bills game. He said kickers need to account for winds even in warm, late-summer games because the stadium is open at the corners of one end zone. Also, the rural area surrounding the stadium is wide open to gales off nearby Lake Erie. When Mare is kicking at Buffalo, he is 12-for-13 on field goals and 18-for-18 on extra points in eight career games there, dating to 1997 when he was a rookie with Miami. Consider Mare nothing more than a No. 2 Fantasy kicker Week 1.

Mare has costly miss Monday
News: Seahawks K Olindo Mare kicked a 24-yard field goal in the third quarter of Monday's preseason game against the Chargers. However, he missed a 50-yarder in the first quarter and Seattle ended up losing 18-17. Mare did hit both of his extra points.
Analysis: Mare had converted both of his field goals coming into Monday's game, but his competition -- Brandon Coutu -- has shown a stronger and more reliable leg this preseason. Seattle is still not ready to choose a kicker, but even if Mare wins, he is nothing more than a low-end Fantasy option.

PK Mare a leg up on Coutu
News: The Tacoma News Tribune reports that veteran PK Olindo Mare has displayed the more reliable leg in minicamp than that of rookie PK Brandon Coutu, who recently signed his rookie deal with the Seahawks.
Analysis: Normally, watching a camp battle between kickers is about as exciting as watching old women sew quilts, but the Seahawks' placekicker will have a prominent spot in Fantasy because of the club's up-tempo offense (assuming their passing game comes around). We'll deliver the latest news to you about Seattle's kicking situation as we get it, but for now assume that Mare is the better option as a late-round pick in drafts, with Coutu an easy pickup off the waiver wire in case he lands the job.

Mare, Coutu in competition
News: The Seahawks have a kicking competition between Olindo Mare, a longtime Miami Dolphins kicker and one-time All-Pro selection, and rookie Brandon Coutu, a seventh-round pick from Georgia. They gave a quick preview of the upcoming duel in the team's minicamp for veterans and rookies last weekend. Coutu had to leave Sunday with the other rookies, and Mare is the only kicker with the team this week. The coaches will start charting Mare's and Coutu's attempts in June when both are expected to attend the team's minicamp, special-teams coach Bruce DeHaven said in the Seattle Times.
Analysis: The Seahawks drafted Coutu in the 2008 NFL Draft, so he might have an edge if he proves accurate during training camp. Mare, however, is a veteran, which could go further in the locker room. Both will try to replace the departed Josh Brown, and the winner should be considered a No. 2 option in 2008 Fantasy leagues.

Seahawks nab PK Mare
News: The Seahawks have signed former Pro Bowl kicker Olindo Mare to a two-year contract, replacing the departed Josh Brown. Mare spent 10 years with Miami and is the Dolphins' all-time leader in field goals (245), scoring (1,048 points) and field-goal accuracy (.809) but was 10-for-17 on field goals for the New Orleans Saints last season. Even though he is proven, the 34-year-old may have competition for the job. Wednesday, knowing Mare was due to Seahawks team headquarters for a visit, team president Tim Ruskell said Seattle was continuing to evaluate kickers available in next month's draft. "We like a lot of kickers in the college game," Ruskell said. "I could foresee where we have a veteran and a rookie in training camp fighting it out. That would be the perfect world for us."
Analysis: Expect Mare to fight for his job this summer, which is too bad because whomever is kicking for the Seahawks in 2008 is expected to do well thanks to their expected-to-be-prolific offense. For now, figure Mare to be a top-end No. 2 Fantasy PK, well worth using as at least a bye-week replacement if not a regular kicker if he wins the job and is accurate coming out of the gate.

Broncos make offer to Mare
News: The Rocky Mountain News reports that the Broncos hosted free-agent PK Olindo Mare for a two-day visit and offered him a contract. Mare did not sign it and is expected to visit Seattle. "I wouldn't say that there wasn't enough to make me sign here because I had a great time. I loved it and all that. But obviously when you have options, it's good to explore them all ...," Mare said. "I'm lucky that the teams are interested are pretty much wining programs and on their way to the playoffs. That's a big part of what I want to be a part of right now."
Analysis: In Denver, Mare would get a fair share of tries, but in Seattle, Mare would likely get more field-goal attempts and extra points thanks to the Seahawks' potent offense. Either way, Mare is not a reliable weekly Fantasy PK; he's more of a bye-week replacement, especially if he ends up in Denver. He might be a bit of a sleeper if the Seahawks ink him.

Saints dump kicker Olindo Mare
News: NewOrleansSaints.com reports that the club has terminated the contract of placekicker Olindo Mare, making Martin Gramatica their kicker for 2008. Mare had a $1.5 million cap number, which might have played into the Saints' decision to let him go.
Analysis: A hip injury suffered in Week 13 ended Mare's year early, not that the Saints minded. Mare made just 10-of-17 field goals, missing 4-of-5 from 50-plus yards, but did take care of all 34 extra points he handled. Mare has taken a tumble from his glory days with the Dolphins; if he signs on somewhere and becomes the primary placekicker, he'll be a decent bye-week replacement at best. Don't go drafting him this summer.

Mare gets competition for job
News: The Saints re-signed kicker Martin Gramatica on Tuesday. Gramatica joined the Saints for the final three games in 2007 and made all five of his field goal attempts. He will compete in training camp with Olindo Mare, who struggled for much of the 2007 season before suffering a season-ending hip injury in December.
Analysis: A hip injury suffered in Week 13 ended Mare's year early, not that the Saints minded. Mare made just 10-of-17 field goals, missing 4-of-5 from 50-plus yards, but did take care of all 34 extra points he handled. Mare has a $1.5M cap number, something the Saints may not want to pay after his dismal 2007 season. Whomever wins the battle between Gramatica and Mare this summer will be a decent Fantasy kicker in 2008 thanks to the Saints' high-powered offense. Neither one would be anything better than a late-round pick.

PK Mare ends 2007 on Injured Reserve
News: Olindo Mare was traded to New Orleans during last offseason, which looked great on paper but didn't quite come through on the field. A hip injury suffered in Week 13 ended his year early, not that the Saints minded. Mare made just 10-of-17 field goals, missing 4-of-5 from 50-plus yards, but did take care of all 34 extra points he handled. Martin Gramatica replaced Mare and nailed five field-goal attempts including a 55 yarder.
Analysis: Mare has a $1.5M cap number, something the Saints may not want to pay after his dismal 2007 season. No matter where he kicks, he's not worth using as a No. 1 Fantasy PK in 2008.

Mare's season comes to an end
News: The New Orleans Saints signed kicker Martin Gramatica on Wednesday and placed Olindo Mare on injured reserve. Mare hurt his hip making a tackle late in the Saints' 34-14 triumph over Atlanta Week 14. The injury was serious enough to keep him out for the rest of the season, coach Sean Payton said.
Analysis: Mare had a very disappointing first season with the Saints. He made all 34 extra points, but hit on just 10 of 17 field goals. There is a chance he is not back with the Saints in 2008, but if he is, he would be nothing more than a low-end Fantasy option. It is safe to cut him in all Fantasy formats.

News: Saints K Olindo Mare made both field goals and all four extra points he attempted Week 14 at Atlanta. His longest field goal went for 36 yards.

Analysis: Mare has not been the Fantasy option many people envisioned. The Saints are scoring points and moving the ball, but they are getting into the end zone and Mare isn't getting a chance to attempt field goals. He is merely a low-end Fantasy option heading into Week 14 against the Falcons.

Mare to remain starter
News: Olindo Mare hit a number of field goals from various distances at Thursday's practice, giving New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton enough confidence to keep Mare active this Sunday night in Seattle. "Mare looked a lot better, looked sharp, did a good job," Payton said on Thursday. Mare, who hurt his right groin practicing an onside kick a little over a week ago, made only two of four field goal attempts during the Saints 16-13 loss to Carolina last Sunday. During the loss, Mare kicked a 20-yard chip shot low and it was easily blocked by Julius Peppers. He also pulled a 54-yard attempt wide left.
Analysis: Mare sat out Wednesday's practice, but went through full routines Thursday and Friday. He is listed as probable for Week 6. Mare came to the Saints from the Miami Dolphins in a trade during the offseason. Last season in Miami, Mare was a perfect 10-for-10 from inside 30 yards, but missed 10 field goals from beyond that distance, including five from beyond 50 yards. Mare has missed four of seven field goal attempts so far this season. Mare is nothing more than a bye-week Fantasy replacement at this time.

Mare in jeopardy of losing job
News: It was hard for 11-year veteran Olindo Mare not to notice the fellow kickers brought in for workouts by the New Orleans Saints this week. "I'm friends with some of them," Mare said after sitting out Wednesday's practice in hopes of getting his sore right groin well enough to kick in Seattle on Sunday night. "I knew what was going on and I'm sure from (the Saints') standpoint, if they're not sure I can kick and get any power ... then why wouldn't they" try out other kickers. I don't think you can judge a player on one game, though. That's obvious, if you've done it for 10 or 11 years." Mare kicked hurt against Carolina last Sunday and it showed. He had a 20-yard chip shot blocked early in the fourth quarter, then hooked a 54-yarder wide left with a chance to give the Saints the lead shortly before the 2-minute warning. New Orleans lost 16-13.
Analysis: Coach Sean Payton wouldn't immediately commit to signing any of the seven kickers he's looked at this week. He said he wants to see how Mare kicks at practice on Thursday first. If Mare manages to hold onto the job, he would be nothing more than a bye-week Fantasy replacement at this time.

Saints audition kickers Tuesday
News: According to the Times-Picayune, the Saints will audition at least three kickers on Tuesday in search of a possible replacement for Olindo Mare, who has missed four of seven field goals this season. League sources indicated Mike Vanderjagt, the most accurate kicker in National Football League history and someone whom the Saints worked out in March, is among those scheduled to work, as is former Dallas and Tampa Bay kicker Martin Gramatica. The agent for former Saints kicker Billy Cundiff confirmed Cundiff's scheduled workout.
Analysis: Mare struggled in Miami last season, but obviously the Saints thought his poor kicking could be solved by a move indoors. At the moment, it looks like they were dead wrong. If you own Mare, you better have a capable backup.

Payton concerned about Mare
News: The Sports Xchange reports with so many games being decided by a field goal or less, Saints coach Sean Payton is showing some concern about kicker Olindo Mare. Mare, who came to the Saints this offseason in a trade with the Miami Dolphins, has been wildly inconsistent in the team's last three games. He missed three field goals against his old team in the final exhibition game and is one of three in the first two regular-season outings.
Analysis: The misses against the Dolphins were from 33, 50 and 55 yards and Mare missed from 52 in the season opener at Indianapolis. In a 31-14 loss to the Tampa Bay Bucs last week, he was wide left with a 38-yard attempt and hit a line-drive kickoff to start the second half. "Yeah, you know we miss another field goal," Payton said. "We line-drive a kickoff to the 30. You know, defensively, offensively and on special teams, I'm concerned. We've lost the first two games of the season and it hasn't been pretty." Mare isn't in jeopardy of losing his job at this time, but will need to be better in the coming weeks. Treat him as a low-end Fantasy flier heading into Week 3 against the Titans.

Mare ready to replace Carney
News: Former Dolphins kicker Olindo Mare knows it will be tough to replace John Carney as the Saints kicker. "Ive got a lot of respect for John," said Mare in The Advocate. "Hes one of the best. Hes one of the guys that all us young guys, compared to John, I guess, want to be. Who doesnt want to do what John has done in this league?" Mare is the Dolphins all-time leader in field goals (245), scoring (1,148) and field-goal accuracy (.809, 245 of 303). He has led the NFL in touchbacks since 1999 (126, including tying his career-high with an NFL-leading 24 last season). Last season, Mare led Miami with 100 points, making 26 of 36 field goals and making all 22 PATs. He made his last nine field goal attempts of the season.

News: The Saints have dealt the Dolphins a sixth-round pick in exchange for PK Olindo Mare. Mare made 26-of-36 field goals last season with 22 extra points. Analysis: Mare's arrival likely means the end of John Carney in New Orleans, which completely robs him of Fantasy value for the time being. Mare, on the other hand, jumps into the mix as a top-15 Fantasy kicker worthy of being a solid bye-week replacement, if not a low-end starter all season thanks to the Saints' potent offense that he'll work with. Kicking indoors in the NFC South will also help his cause.

Mare willing to give back bonus
News: Multiple South Florida papers report that Dolphins PK Olindo Mare is willing to return a $250,000 bonus he received in exchange for his release from the club. Mare wants to find a new team after the Dolphins signed PK Jay Feely, but the team won't let him shop himself around as they'd like to get something for him in trade.
Analysis: Expect Mare to ultimately find work elsewhere in 2007. So long as he's in a dome or a warm-weather city, he should be good enough to be a bye-week replacement for Fantasy use.

Feely signs up with Dolphins
News: Placekicker Jay Feely has agreed to a three-year deal with the Dolphins, reports Newsday, citing someone close to the negotiations. The Dolphins will cut Olindo Mare to make room for Feely.
Analysis: Feely should be decent in Miami, although his status will depend on who's quarterbacking the Dolphins and if the offense is able to move the ball well on a regular basis. For now, don't consider using Feely for anything more than a bye-week replacement in 2007.

Mare hates kicking at home
News: According to the Palm Beach Post, Dolphins kicker Olindo Mare is not a fan of kicking field goals from the dirt infield of Dolphin Stadium. Case in point, his missed 30-yard field goal in Week 3. The snap was fine, but Donnie Jones struggled getting a grip on the hold. "The hardest thing is not kicking," Mare said during training camp. "It's harder for the snapper and the holder, because he throws the ball back with a lot of dirt on it and sometimes when Donnie goes to spin the ball, because (the ground is) so hard, it continues to rotate. I think Donnie's job is hard on the dirt, to get that ball to stop."
