Davis hits the century mark
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis turned in another productive performance as he reached the century mark for the second straight game during Super Bowl XLVII against the Ravens. Davis was targeted eight times as he finished with eight catches for 104 yards in a 34-31 defeat.
Analysis: Baltimore had only allowed two touchdowns to opposing tight ends this season, which explains why Davis had such a hard time reaching the end zone Sunday night. The 29-year-old turned things around during the postseason after being held in check in the final six regular season games. Davis finished with 41 catches for 548 yards and five touchdowns, averaging just 34.3 yards per game in the regular season, which is the lowest average since 2008. He seems to be on the same page now with Colin Kaepernick, so consider him a mid- to late-round draft pick in Fantasy next season.

Can Davis score two weeks in a row?
News: Niners tight end Vernon Davis finally woke up against the Falcons with five catches for 106 yards and a touchdown on six targets two weeks ago. Can he stay as involved against the Ravens in the Super Bowl? Davis' score at Atlanta was the first time he scored since Week 11, which was Colin Kaepernicks first start, and that was the last time he had more than three targets. The Ravens have only allowed two touchdowns to tight ends all season, but last week Aaron Hernandez had nine catches for 83 yards on 14 targets.
Analysis: We liked Davis in his last game particularly because the Falcons had struggled with tight ends. That's not the case here as the Ravens have been solid against tight ends and surely they will have a game plan for Davis. We don't have high expectations for Davis this week. As for 2013 drafts, Davis has some appeal as a value pick with the assumption he'll be utilized more than he was for much of Kaepernick's time as the starter. If you can snag him with a mid- to late-round pick there's at least some upside without as much risk.

49ers counting on Davis
News: 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said at a news conference Friday that tight end Vernon Davis' role hasn't changed throughout the season. Despite a down year, Davis had a monster NFC Championship Game at Atlanta with five catches for 106 yards and a touchdown. Harbaugh expects Davis to play well again in the Super Bowl against Baltimore. "Vernon Davis always has been, always will be a big part of our passing game," Harbaugh said. "And a big part of our running game. So, that hasnt changed or will change.
Analysis: Davis woke up at the right time for Fantasy owners still alive in any Playoff Challenge format, but owners who had Davis in the regular season were a little disappointed since he had just 41 catches for 548 yards and five touchdowns. Still, Davis is capable of playing at a high level, and he is worth using in the Super Bowl. Hopefully another strong outing will carry over to his play in 2013.

Davis scores in playoff win
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, who racked up just 43 yards in his last playoff game, bounced back with another solid performance during Sunday's NFC Championship game against the Falcons. Davis was unable to come up with a grab in the first quarter but finished with 75 yards receiving in the first half. He also caught a 4-yard pass from Colin Kaepernick in the second quarter for a touchdown. Davis was targeted six times and caught five passes for a team-high 106 yards with a touchdown in a 28-24 victory.
Analysis: Davis was able to come up big when San Francisco needed him the most, as he was able to help chip away a 17-point deficit against Atlanta. That said, performances like this have been far and far between. He caught 41 passes for 548 yards and five touchdowns and averaged just 34.3 yards per game in the regular season, which is the lowest average since 2008. He will now face the winner of the AFC Championship between the Patriots and the Ravens. He did not face the Ravens this season and caught just one of the three passes thrown his way for a 10-yard gain in Week 15 against New England. Consider the 28-year-old a decent option in Playoff Challenge formats heading into the Super Bowl.

Davis hopes for big game
News: The 49ers team website reports that tight end Vernon Davis is hopeful to have more opportunities in the passing game against the Falcons in the NFC Championship Game this week, but he also understands that building chemistry with Colin Kaepernick takes time. Its been good, Davis said of their growing relationship. When a new quarterback comes in you have to learn from him, adapt to him and start all over. Thats what weve been doing, but its been good because weve been winning. Davis respects the big arm and blistering speed Kaepernick provides. He also enjoys the leadership being displayed from a young quarterback with eight starts under his belt. I definitely respect him, Davis said. Hes done some awesome things here. For him to come out here and do what hes done, I definitely have to take my hat off to him
Hes doing a great job.
Analysis: Davis has struggled this season. He caught 41 passes for 548 yards and five touchdowns in the regular season. In San Franciscos 45-31 Divisional Playoff win over the Packers, Davis hauled in a perfectly thrown over-the-shoulder reception for a 44-yard gain. With the long grab, Davis became the most productive tight end in his first three postseason games. The 49ers tight end has totaled 336 receiving yards in three postseason games (due in large part to his breakout postseason a year ago), the most by a tight end in his first three playoff games. We hope Davis plays well against the Falcons, but he's struggled with Kaepernick under center. We consider Davis just a low-end option in Playoff Challenge leagues.

Davis goes deep
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis hauled in just one catch in Saturdays NFC Divisional Playoff game against the Packers, but he made it count. Davis was targeted five times but only caught one pass, for 44 yards. His lone reception was just the second-longest of the day for the 49ers, who won, 45-31.
Analysis: Davis role has slipped in recent weeks, as this was held to just one reception in each of the final four games of the season. He had just the one catch Saturday, but the five targets were his highest total since Week 11. We would like to see him bring in more of the passes thrown to him moving forward, but at least the Niners looked his way. He remains more of a low-end Fantasy option for Playoff Challenge leagues.

Davis: I'm part of the plan
News: Niners tight end Vernon Davis said Monday he plans to be a key contributor for the team's offense this postseason, beginning with this week's game vs. the Packers. Davis has been saying this for weeks, per the San Jose Mercury News, and the feeling is that defenses have been taking Davis away so he can't be impactful. "There's some multiple factors there, the biggest one being that defenses are playing us and taking that into account, taking Vernon into account," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "They're wary of getting beat by Vernon Davis. That's the biggest issue."
Analysis: Fantasy owners were beat by Davis too as he did next to nothing statistically in 10 of the team's last 11 games. The Packers have allowed just five touchdowns to tight ends all season (two in their last 10 games). You'd have to be borderline crazy to consider Davis a solid Fantasy playoff league starter. We'll see how his offseason goes before projecting him in 2013 drafts, but the hunch is that he'll be a late-round pick.

Davis limited by head injury
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis registered only one reception for five yards during San Francisco's 27-13 win over Arizona in Week 17. Davis was surprisingly active for the game despite being listed as questionable on the team's injury report while recovering from a concussion he sustained last Sunday. His lone catch came on the team's third series in the first quarter, as Delanie Walker took over (two receptions for 50 yards).
Analysis: Davis was able to finish the game for the 49ers but with the team holding a large advantage, he did not play a pivotal role in the victory. He finished with just two targets during the game compared to four looks for Walker as Michael Crabtree stole the show with eight receptions for 172 yards. Davis could still be fazed by the head injury and San Francisco wanted to keep him somewhat fresh for the postseason. For now, he carries an injury risk for upcoming Fantasy playoff leagues as he has also managed just one catch in his past four games.

Davis stays active in Week 17
News: After some slight concern about his status earlier this weekend, San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis remained active for Week 17 against Arizona despite recovering from a concussion. Davis, who was listed as questionable on the team's injury report, sustained a concussion after a jarring hit last Sunday against Seattle.
Analysis: Davis could still split snaps with fellow tight end Delanie Walker as the 49ers look to keep him healthy for the postseason. The 28-year-old Davis has struggled recently, failing to surpass two receptions over his past five games while not recording a touchdown in that span. The Cardinals are permitting an average of 6.4 Fantasy points per game to opposing tight ends this season, but with the combination of Davis' injury and struggles, he is not viewed as a viable Fantasy option for Week 17.

Davis' status in question for finale
News: San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis was listed as questionable for Week 17 against Arizona as he rebounds from a concussion he sustained last Sunday. Davis, who left in the first quarter of Week 16 after taking a hit from Seattle's Kam Chancellor and did not return, was unable to take part in contact drills during practice this week. He still needs final clearance from an independent source in order to suit up against the Cardinals, who rank third in the NFL against the pass this season (195.7 yards allowed per game through the air). But coach Jim Harbaugh indicated Friday that Davis would be able to play Sunday.
Analysis: If Davis is unable to receive clearance prior to Sunday's game, fellow tight end Delanie Walker could earn his first start of the season. Even if he is cleared, the 49ers could take the cautious approach and keep him out as they have already secured a playoff berth. The 28-year-old has struggled mightily recently and not surpassed two receptions over his past five games while failing to record a touchdown in that span. The Cardinals are permitting an average of 6.4 Fantasy points per game to opposing tight ends this season, but with the combination of Davis' injury and struggles, he is not viewed as a viable Fantasy option for Week 17.

Davis cleared for non-contact activities
News: CSNBayArea.com reported Thursday that 49ers tight end Vernon Davis was cleared by an independent neurologist to step up non-contact football activity following a concussion in Week 16s loss to the Seahawks. Davis still needs clearance to actually play in Week 17 against the Cardinals, which will require that he remain without concussion symptoms throughout the week of practice. According to the report, Davis will need to be cleared for contact simulation drills, which the 49ers usually partake in one or two days prior to game day.
Analysis: Davis production has been slowing down even before this injury, so Fantasy owners certainly have to be wary or relying on him in the final game of the season. Davis has fewer than two catches in each of the last five games, while totaling just 56 yards in that time span. Whether he is able to play Sunday against the Cardinals, Fantasy owners should consider him a risky option for Week 17.

Davis doesn't have setbacks
News: San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis, who left the Week 16 loss to Seattle with a concussion, has not experienced any setbacks as of Wednesday, reports CSN Bay Area. That said, coach Jim Harbaugh kept Davis out of practice Wednesday. He is questionable for the Week 17 regular-season finale against Arizona.
Analysis: Davis has caught just one pass for minimal yardage in three straight games and has just five caches in his last six games. He's become a forgotten option with Colin Kaepernick throwing the passes. Even if he plays Week 17, Davis is not a recommended Fantasy option.

Davis exits with concussion
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis was forced out of Sunday's contest against the Seahawks in Week 16 after suffering an apparent concussion. Colin Kaepernick connected with Davis for a 26-yard catch in the first quarter. Davis took a brutal hit from Kam Chancellor right after making the catch. He was examined by trainers and sent to the locker room, which diagnosed him with a concussion and ruled him out for the remainder of the game.
Analysis: Davis finished with just that one catch alone and may have ruined some championship hopes for Fantasy owners on Sunday. He will likely end up on the injury report heading into Week 17 as the team will take the proper protocol needed. He will likely need to be cleared by an independent league-certified neurologist before he can resume to game action, so we'll keep an eye on that moving forward. At this point, he would be considered a risky start, even if healthy, heading into Week 17 at home against the Cardinals.

VD not on same page with QB
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis has been absent from the passing game the last few weeks and the veteran tight end said he just hasn't developed rapport yet with quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who has replaced Alex Smith under center. "You have to develop that chemistry and that bond," Davis said. "Thats something Kap and I dont have right now. We have to build that. It's fun, it's fun. It's like starting all over again." The 49ers are at Seattle in Week 16. Davis has averaged 39.5 yards per game with a total of three touchdowns in 11 career meetings against the Seahawks. He was held without a catch in his last meeting against Seattle in Week 7.
Analysis: While Davis remains upbeat about his current situation, Fantasy owners don't have the same excitement. Davis has totaled two Fantasy points in his last four games. Let's not forget that Davis had a good game Week 11 vs. Chicago when Kaepernick was under center. It's just the more starts Kaepernick gets under his belt, the more he is relying on his wide receivers. Opposing tight ends have scored an average of 6.3 Fantasy points per game against the Seahawks this season, which is the seventh-fewest allowed in the league. Fantasy owners should consider Davis a very risky Fantasy play heading into Week 16 at Seattle.

Davis continues to disappoint
News: San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis continued to struggle during Sunday's contest at New England in Week 15. He was outperformed by his fellow tight end Delanie Walker, who caught a 34-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Davis caught just one of the three passes thrown his way for a 10-yard gain in a 41-34 victory.
Analysis: Even with Mario Manningham sidelined with a shoulder injury, Davis failed to get it going in the passing game, though he nearly stretched out and made a big catch deep down the field on Sunday. He has been extremely disappointing with Colin Kaepernick under center and has only racked up 29 yards on four catches over his last three games. He'll have to get on the same page with Kaepernick heading into a tough matchup at Seattle next week. The Seahawks held the 28-year-old without a catch in his last meeting in Week 7. Fantasy owners in the playoffs should seek other alternatives heading into Week 16.

Davis looking to end slump
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis will try to get back on track heading into a tough matchup on the road against the Patriots in Week 15. Davis hauled in just one reception for 4 yards in Week 14 against the Dolphins. He has caught just three passes in his last three games. He'll face a New England defense that has allowed 65.9 yards per game to opposing tight ends, including seven touchdowns on the year, and just once in the last four games.
Analysis: After hauling in six catches for 83 yards and a touchdown in Colin Kaepernicks first start at quarterback against the Bears in Week 11, Davis has been targeted just five times in his last three games. He caught just three passes for 19 yards over that three-game stretch. His fall from Fantasy relevancy has been well documented over the pass few weeks as he has gone from a must-start option to the forgotten option in the 49ers' passing game. Opposing tight ends have scored an average of 9.1 Fantasy points per game this season against the Patriots. Consider him as a low-end option in most formats heading into Week 15.

Davis remains a non-factor
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis was once again a complete non-factor in Week 14 against the Dolphins. Davis hauled in just one reception for 4 yards in the 27-13 win, which came in the first half. He only saw one other pass thrown in his direction for the remainder of the game as he once again took a backseat to Michael Crabtree in the passing game, who finished with a team-high nine receptions for 93 yards.
Analysis: Davis' fall from Fantasy relevancy has been well documented over the pass few weeks as he has gone from a must-start option to the forgotten option in the 49ers' passing game. He has totaled just three catches for 19 yards over his last three games and was even shutout once over that stretch. Davis has actually totaled under 40 yards receiving in six of the previous seven games and has just one touchdown over that span. While he does look to have somewhat of a favorable matchup on tap against the Patriots in Week 15, Davis' recent cold stretch has made him a very risky play in most leagues. Consider him merely a low-end option against New England next Sunday.

Davis in for another slow performance?
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis has caught just two passes for 15 yards over the previous two games with quarterback Colin Kaepernick at the helm. He could be in for another slow performance in Week 14 against the Dolphins. Miami ranks 27th in the league in pass defense, giving up over 257 yards per contest, but has limited opposing tight ends to an average of seven Fantasy points.
Analysis: While Davis had a solid performance in the first game Kaepernick started, he has not done much for owners of late. He has been held under 40 yards receiving in six of the previous seven games and has just one touchdown over that span. The Dolphins have surrendered just two scores to tight ends on the year so owners with a better option should leave Davis reserved in most Fantasy formats for Week 14.

Davis totals 15 yards Week 13
News: San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis was held in check in the Week 13 overtime loss at St. Louis Sunday. Davis caught just two passes for 15 yards in the game. He was targeted just three times overall by quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
Analysis: Davis caught four touchdown passes in his first three games and had a 100-yard game Week 5 with Alex Smith throwing the passes. All he's done in the last two games with Kaepernick in there has been two catches for 15 yards. We are fairly certain Davis will post better lines going forward, even with Kaepernick remaining the starter. That said, he's obviously not as reliable now as he was earlier in the year. Still, Davis remains a worthy start for Week 14 against Miami in most formats.

Davis still looking to click with Kaepernick
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis will be looking to have a bounce-back performance heading into Week 13 on the road against the Rams. Davis was held without a catch for the second time this season and will try to get back on track against a stingy St. Louis defense that has allowed just three touchdowns to opposing tight ends this season. Davis hauled in just four catches for 30 yards his last time out against the Rams in Week 10.
Analysis: Davis got off to a hot start by scoring four touchdowns in his first four games, but has since found the end zone just one time in his last eight games and has only surpassed 40 yards receiving twice in that span. It seems as if Davis will have get on the same page as Colin Kaepernick, who was named the starter again for the third consecutive game. With Kaepernick under center, Davis has caught nine passes for 107 yards in the last three games. opposing tight ends have scored an average of 7.6 Fantasy points per game this season. The 28-year-old should be viewed as a viable starting option in most formats heading into Week 13.

Davis with another shutout
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis failed to register a catch for the second time this season in Week 12 against the Saints. Instead it was Delanie Walker who saw the majority of the targets as he led the team with three receptions for 83 yards. Davis was targeted once in the 31-21 win but was unable to bring in his lone look.
Analysis: The Saints had two defenders shadowing Davis for much of the game, which left Walker wide open for most of the contest. The 49ers even left the 28-year-old in to block on some plays while Walker ran routes and that seemed to confuse New Orleans even more. However, from a Fantasy standpoint Davis continues to be a huge disappointment as he goes from hot to cold on a weekly basis. While his track record suggest he should be able to bounce back, owners may temper expectations for him when the 49ers take on the Rams in Week 13. Davis had four receptions for 30 yards in the team's lone meeting this season.

Davis looking for repeat performance
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis looks to have a favorable matchup on tap in Week 12 against the Saints. New Orleans enters the contest ranked 31st in pass defense, allowing an average of 305 yards per game. The Saints have surrendered 21 touchdowns through the air while yielding an average of 8.2 Fantasy points, which ranks 24th overall. Davis hauled in seven receptions for 180 yards and a pair of TDs, including the game winner when he faced New Orleans in the playoffs last season.
Analysis: Davis was mired in a mid-season slump as he had hauled in just nine receptions for 101 yards over his previous four games before breaking out last Monday night against the Bears. Most Fantasy owners credit Colin Kaepernick for Davis' bust out performance against Chicago and it appears the 49ers rookie gunslinger will earn another start this week. However, even if Alex Smith were to be under center this looks to be a very enticing matchup for Davis. The Saints have been dreadful defending the pass thus far and have allowed three TDs to opposing TEs over the past two games. No matter who lines up under center for San Francisco this Sunday, Fantasy owners should leave Davis active in the majority of formats.

Davis breaks out vs. Bears
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis turned in his most productive performance in quite some time during Week 11 against the Bears. Davis, who had just nine receptions for 101 yards over his last four games, finished with six receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown in the 32-7 win. His TD reception came on a 3-yard strike from rookie quarterback Colin Kaepernick in the first quarter and he was targeted a team-high eight times in the victory. "I was so proud of him at that moment because the ball that he threw me, it was one of those balls that you see Tom Brady throw" Davis told the Sacramento Bee after the game. "... It was a tight window. Very, very tight. He took the shot. He was very confident in himself, obviously and he made it happen."
Analysis: After turning in four straight underwhelming performances, Davis was finally able to get himself back on track Monday night. Naturally, most Fantasy owners will credit Kaepernick for the 28-year-old's bounce-back effort, but Davis looked to have a little extra pep in his step against the Bears. While it remains unknown at this point who will be under center for the 49ers in Week 12, Davis should be in for a big day regardless against the Saints. New Orleans is surrendering 305 passing yards per contest on the year, which ranks 31st overall. Fantasy owners should continue to roll with Davis as a high-end option in all formats no matter who plays QB next Sunday.

Davis looking to breakout
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis will be looking to get himself back on track in Week 11 against the Bears. Davis has hauled in just nine receptions for 101 yards over his last four games and hasn'r found the end zone since Week 3. However, he looks to have a fairly difficult matchup on tap in Week 11 against the Bears. Chicago enters the contest ranked 11th in pass defense allowing an average of 215 passing yards per game. The Bears have surrendered eight touchdowns through the air while yielding an average of 5.9 Fantasy points to opposing TEs on the year, which ranks eighth overall.
Analysis: After getting off to a red-hot start this season, Davis has been a huge disappointment over the past few weeks. He hasn't surpassed 40 yards in any of his last four games and was even held without a catch in one of those contest. Things likely won't get any easier this week as he will be facing a Bears' defense that has been very good at limiting the production of opposing TEs thus far. Chicago has not surrendered a TD to opposing TE in each of its last five games and keep in mind Alex Smith is coming off a concussion. Fantasy owners should consider using an alternative option Week 11 given Davis' recent lack of production and the tough matchup.

Davis making sure he's team player
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis has been mired in an offensive slump since his 106-yard performance Week 5 against the Bills. Davis hasn't surpassed 40 yards in any of his last four games, totaling nine catches for 101 yards and no touchdowns in that span. Yet, there is no complaints from Davis. "(It's) easy to accept when you're winning because you're winning. And we're getting somewhere, getting toward the playoffs," he said, per CSN Bay Area. "I mean, I do what I'm told. That's pretty much it. At this moment, that's all I can really do. My main focus is just making sure I'm a team guy and just accepting the simple fact that coaches are giving me a certain role to play and I have to accept it. I have to live with it and deal with it at the same time. I look at the bright side of things. I know we have more games and there will be plenty of opportunities to me to help this team."
Analysis: The 49ers are certainly happy Davis is taking a team-first approach, but Fantasy owners are frustrated. He got off to a great start this season and was drafted in most formats to be a starting Fantasy option, but his production lately has been lacking. Clearly, Davis is going with the flow, so who knows when he might re-emerge again offensively. The 49ers have a big showdown with the Bears in Week 11. Tight ends average just 52.1 receiving yards and 5.9 Fantasy points per week against Chicago. Also, a tight end hasn't scored in the last five games against the Bears. Perhaps Fantasy owners should consider using an alternative option Week 11 given Davis' recent lack of production and the tough matchup.

Four grabs for Davis in Week 10
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis had another underwhelming performance in Week 10 against the Rams. He gained 9 yards on two grabs in the first half and finished with four catches for 30 yards in the 24-24 overtime tie. He had a long reception of 17 and averaged 7.5 yards per grab. Davis, who was targeted five times, finished second on San Francsico in receiving behind wideout Michael Crabtree (70 yards).
Analysis: The 49ers' passing game fell off in the second half with Colin Kaepernick at the helm but Davis didn't do much with Alex Smith in the game either. He now has just nine catches for 111 yards in the last four games and has been held out of the end zone since Week 3. After a scorching start to the season, the 28-year-old has been very disappointing for owners and could be in for even more trouble next week against the Bears. Chicago entered Sunday having limited opposing tight ends to just two scores thus far so owners with a better option might want to keep Davis reserved for Week 11.

Davis to finally get on track vs. Rams?
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis has caught just five passes for 71 yards in the last three games and will look to get back on track in Week 10 against the Rams. St. Louis ranks 17th in the league in pass defense, giving up over 237 yards per contest, and has allowed an average of 8.2 Fantasy points to opposing tight ends. In two games against the division foe a year ago, Davis gained 150 yards on 13 catches.
Analysis: Davis has not done much for owners since Week 5 and is currently on pace for his worst campaign since 2008. He is always a threat to find the end zone, however, and the Rams have surrendered three touchdowns to tight ends on the year. Owners that have be burned by the 28-year-old might want to look to a better option for Week 10 but Davis remains a viable play in the majority of formats against St. Louis.

Davis quiet yet again
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis was not much of a factor in Week 8 against the Cardinals. Davis hauled in just two passes for 34 yards in the 24-3 win, but was unable to get into the end zone. He did have a long of 25 yards, albeit was forced to take a backseat to Michael Crabtree, who hauled in five receptions for 72 yards and a pair of scores in the victory. Davis has just five catches for 71 yards over his last three games.
Analysis: Davis was once again not really involved in the 49ers' passing game, which has been the case in each of the last three weeks. And while Fantasy owners are starting to grow tired of this recent trend, it may not be time to jump ship just yet. Even with his three-straight underwhelming performances, Davis is still one of Alex Smith's favorite targets and remains a nightmare matchup for any linebacker to try and cover. Hopefully, Davis and Smith can get on the same page over the next two weeks as the team will get some extra practice time with the 49ers on a bye in Week 9. Despite his recent slump, Davis should remain active in most formats when the Rams come to town in Week 10.

Davis looking to bounce back
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis will be looking to bounce back in a big way in Week 8 against the Cardinals. Davis was held without a catch for just the fourth time in his career and first time since his rookie year in San Francisco's win over the Seahawks last Thursday. However, that could be easier said than done as Arizona is allowing an average of just 27.4 yards receiving and 3.7 Fantasy points to opposing TEs per game this season. In his last five games against the Cardinals, Davis has hauled in 14 receptions for 261 yards and three TDs.
Analysis: After hauling in four TD receptions over his first three games, most thought Davis was headed for another breakout year with the 49ers. However, he has cooled off considerably as he has been held out of the end zone in each of his last four games and has racked up 10 receptions for 171 yards over that stretch. While he has had some success against Arizona over the last few seasons, the Cardinals have been very stingy against opposing TEs thus far. Still, Davis remains a favorite target of Alex Smith and could see some early looks after getting blanked last week. Fantasy owners should continue to roll with Davis in the majority of formats Monday night.

Davis shut out entirely
News: For just the fourth time in his career, 49ers tight end Vernon Davis was held without a catch Thursday against the Seahawks. Davis was a total non-factor in Week 7, as quarterback Alex Smith did not even target him once in the course of the game. This is the first time Davis has been held without a catch since his rookie season, in 2006. The 49ers would still manage to win the game, 13-6.
Analysis: Davis got off to a fast start to the season, with four touchdowns in the first three games. He has been held out of the end zone since, and has managed just one game with more than 40 yards receiving. Hopefully Davis is not regressing to his old form, when he was a perpetual Fantasy disappointment. Part of his performance has to be due to Smiths inconsistent play, but there is no reason to think the 49ers will be making any changes soon. Week 8 does not offer much of a respite as the Cardinals loom on the schedule. Arizona has allowed just two tight ends to score this season. Davis potential makes him too valuable to consider benching, but Fantasy owners have to hope he can turn things around in Week 8.

Davis missing the end zone
News: San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis heads into Week 7 on Thursday against Seattle with eight touchdowns in his last eight games, including the playoffs. Since 2009, including the playoffs, Davis leads all NFL tight ends with 34 touchdowns. That said, he played the Seahawks twice last year and couldn't score in either game as he went for nine grabs and 101 yards. In his last five games against the Seahawks, Davis has 28 catches for 355 yards and two touchdowns, his last score coming Dec. 2010.
Analysis: Davis has been held out of the end zone in each of his last three games and managed just three catches for 37 yards last week against the Giants. That said, he did go for 106 yards Week 5 against Buffalo and he began the year with four touchdowns in his first three games. Seattle has only allowed one tight end touchdown all year but that came last week against Aaron Hernandez of the Patriots. Davis might have trouble scoring, but he remains a worthwhile start in all Fantasy formats for the Week 7 Thursday game.

Davis can't find scoring touch
News: San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis finished with three receptions for 37 yards during the 49ers' 26-3 loss to the Giants in Week 6. Davis has now failed to top 40 yards in two of his past three games as he finished with an average of 12.3 yards per catch. His scoreless streak also reached three games after he posted four touchdowns in his first three weeks of the season.
Analysis: The 49ers were ineffective all-around during Sunday's game, especially in the passing game (three interceptions for Alex Smith) and that extended to Davis. He has served as the team's main target near the end zone, but without San Francisco creating any sustainable drives matches his longest scoring drought from last season. Davis has shown he can bounce back quickly and Fantasy owners should keep him active in all formats for Week 7 against Seattle on Thursday.

Davis aiming for giant outing
News: Facing the Giants seems to bring out the best in San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis. Including the playoffs, Davis has registered three touchdowns in his past two games against New York and turned in one of the best performances of his career during last year's NFC Championship. Davis posted only three catches during last year's thrilling playoff games, but two went for touchdowns as he amassed a whopping 112 yards (37.3 yards per catch average). The Giants defense has given up 261.4 passing yards per game this year, 10th most in the NFL.
Analysis: Davis is coming off his first 100-yard outing of the season when he collected 106 yards on five catches against Buffalo last Sunday. But the game also extended his scoreless streak to two games after he totaled four touchdowns in the first three weeks of the season. The 28-year-old may have a difficult time halting that streak as the Giants have not permitted a touchdown to an opposing tight end this year and are allowing an average of just 4.0 Fantasy points to the position. Still, Davis is too productive to bench, especially against New York, and should remain active in all Fantasy formats.

Davis gets going early in Week 5
News: San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the first time this season during Sunday's contest against the Bills at home in Week 5. Davis bounced back from a 28-yard performance last week and turned a team-high seven targets into five catches for 106 yards but failed to reach the end zone in a convincing 45-3 victory. Davis got going early when he turned in short Alex Smith pass down the sideline into a 53-yard gain in the first quarter, which eventually led into a field goal.
Analysis: It was nice to see Davis have a big game after his disappointing performance last week as it was the first time he eclipsed the 100-yard mark since Week 17 of last season. Davis has been one of Smith's top targets this season 29 targets into 20 catches for 303 yards and four touchdowns through his first five games. He's reached the 300-yard mark through his first five games for just the second time in his career. He'll head into a tough matchup next week against the Giants at home, who allowed 291 yards through the air, including 27 yards to opposing tight ends in Week 5 against Cleveland. Fantasy owners should view Davis as a high-end option heading into Week 6.

Davis primed for bounce-back game
News: San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis is looking to get back in the end zone after enduring his worst game of the season as he heads into a favorable matchup at home against the Bills in Week 5. Davis finished with just two receptions for 28 yards and failed to reach the end zone for the first time this year against the Jets in Week 4. He'll encounter a Buffalo defense that permitted 340 yards and three touchdowns through the air, including 104 yards and a touchdown to Rob Gronkowski last week against the Patriots.
Analysis: Davis has only seen two targets in the red zone, but has turned both of those targets into a pair of touchdowns and is starting to emerge as one of the game's best tight ends. He is the second-leading receiver in his team, turning 22 targets into 15 catches for 197 yards and four touchdowns thus far. Buffalo has permitted 7 Fantasy points per game to opposing tight ends, which ranks them 12th in the league. Davis should be primed for a bounce-back performance this week and should be considered as a must-start Fantasy option heading into Week 5.

Davis hit with Jet lag in Week 4
News: San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis finished with just two receptions for 28 yards during the 49ers' 34-0 victory over the Jets in Week 4. Davis, who was considered probable for the game despite a back injury that crept up on his during Friday's practice, earned just two targets from quarterback Alex Smith. His totals Sunday marked his lowest receptions and yardage outputs through four games this season.
Analysis: With New York struggling to stop the run, San Francisco hardly took to the air which left Davis primarily as a blocker on Sunday. In addition to the low totals, his streak of games reaching the end zone this season was halted at three as Smith went without a touchdown pass during the outing. Davis should be able to rebound quickly against Buffalo in Week 5 as the Bills yielded a touchdown to New England's Ron Gronkowski on Sunday. Keep Davis active as a high-end Fantasy option for next Sunday's battle.

Davis aims to extend TD streak
News: As expected, San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis is active for Week 4 at the Jets after dealing with a minor back issue in Friday's practice. Davis, who has scored a touchdown in each of the first three games this year, was added to the injury report as probable on Friday.
Analysis: Quietly and effectively, Davis has served as one of the prized scoring options at his position and leads all tight ends with 30 touchdowns since the start of the 2009 season. He is enjoying another strong season already and has posted at least 10.6 yards per catch in all three games, in addition to the sterling touchdown total (four). The Jets have been tough against tight ends (7.0 Fantasy points per game), but with the team facing uncertainty in its secondary, Davis could be in for another big outing. He remains a must-start in all Fantasy formats for Week 4.

Davis a touchdown machine
News: San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis was listed as probable on the team's injury report for Week 4 against the Jets because of a sudden back injury. Davis was added to the list Friday, but was still a full participant in practice as he attempts to extend his touchdown streak to four games this season Sunday on the road. Overall, he is aiming for a touchdown in his sixth consecutive game, dating back to the playoffs last season and has reached the end zone eight times during that stretch. New York has allowed two touchdowns to tight ends this year.
Davis gets another score
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis again had a solid game in Week 3 at the Vikings. Davis had five catches for 53 yards and a touchdown on eight targets. Davis now has 13 catches for 169 yards and four touchdowns on the season. He has at least 100 yards receiving or scored a touchdown in seven of his past eight games going back to last year, including the playoffs, with nine touchdowns over that span.
Analysis: Davis remains a No. 1 Fantasy tight end in the majority of leagues. He will look to remain hot in Week 4 at the Jets and should be started in all formats. The Jets have already allowed touchdowns to Scott Chandler in Week 1 and Heath Miller in Week 2.

Davis looks to keep rolling
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis is on an impressive tear heading into Week 3 at Minnesota. Davis has eight catches for 116 yards and three touchdowns in two games this season on 12 targets, and he has now had at least 100 yards receiving or scored a touchdown in six of his past seven games going back to last year, including the playoffs, with eight touchdowns over that span. This week Davis faces a Vikings team that has allowed a tight end to score in each of the first two games this season with Marcedes Lewis in Week 1 and Dwayne Allen in Week 2.
Analysis: Davis is having a monster season already, and he should remain hot against the Vikings. Consider him a must-start Fantasy option in all leagues this week.

Davis finds the end zone again
News: After earning laughs around the league for his Week 1 touchdown celebration -- in which he tried, and failed, to dunk the football through the uprights -- 49ers tight end Vernon Davis was hoping for a chance to redeem himself Sunday against the Lions. He did not wait long for that redemption, as he and Alex Smith connected on the first drive of the game for a 21-yard score in which Davis easily beat the safety for his second touchdown catch of the season. Davis wisely took the easy points on his celebration this time around, settling for a jump shot through the uprights. Davis ultimately ended up with an even finer game in Week 2 than the opener, as he brought in one more touchdown from Smith late in the fourth quarter, from 23 yards out, to put the 49ers up two scores in a game they would go on to win, 27-19. He finished with five catches for a team high 73 yards to go with his two scores.
Analysis: Davis is on quite a roll to begin the season, opening with three scores through his first two games, and if you including the final three weeks of last season, playoffs included, he is starting to look like an elite tight end. Davis has 26 catches for 526 yards and seven touchdowns over his last five games, as he has developed impressive chemistry with Alex Smith. The two will try to keep it up in Week 3 against a Vikings defense that has allowed two receiving touchdowns to tight ends through two weeks this season. Davis has truly emerged as a high-end Fantasy tight end in all formats moving forward.

Davis points to hands for improvement
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis has long had the physical tools to be one of the best tight ends in the league, but he confessed to NFL.com Tuesday that he has only recently begun to trust his improving hand-eye coordination for tough grabs, like the one he brought in for a four-yard touchdown pass last week against Green Bay. The first couple of years (in the NFL) I probably couldnt have done anything like that, Davis said of the touchdown catch. Thats something that Ive been working on. Its one of those catches where you have to go out and train your eyes and hands to be able to grab that ball. Davis will look to build off his strong Week 1 by taking on a team that has given him trouble in three games, as the 49ers are set to take on the Lions Sunday night.
Analysis: Davis has faced the Lions three times in his career, and has come away with just six catches for 43 yards and a touchdown, but he is currently riding a three-game scoring streak dating back to last years playoffs. The Lions did a good job of smothering the Rams tight ends in Week 1, limiting them to just three catches for 26 yards combined, but none of the Rams passing game cannot matchup with what the Niners put out there. "Its awesome playing with those guys [Michael Crabtree and Randy Moss] because we work hand-in-hand," he said. "If the attention goes to them I get the ball and if it goes to me they get the ball. With his evolving skillset and a matchup that could force the Niners to throw the ball a lot, Fantasy owners should consider him a strong matchup in all formats against the Lions in Week 2.

V. Davis finds end zone in Week 1
News: 49ers tight end Vernon Davis made the most of the balls thrown his way in Week 1 against the Packers. He caught three passes for 43 yards and a touchdown in the 30-22 win. He hauled in a 4-yard scoring strike from quarterback Alex Smith in the third quarter for the 36th touchdown of his career. Davis was targeted five times -- second most on San Francisco -- in the victory and had a long reception of 29 yards.
Analysis: Davis got off to a fast start in Week 1 and is still one of the more targeted players in San Francisco despite the additions of Randy Moss and Mario Manningham in the offseason. His rapport with Alex Smith has paid off greatly for Fantasy owners and the 28-year-old continues to be one of the more valuable tight ends. There are few options out there you would start over Davis so keep him active in all formats heading into Week 2 against the Lions. When Davis faced Detroit a year ago, he was held to 8 yards on two catches.

V. Davis looking to get off to fast start
News: After catching just five passes for 47 yards in the season opener a year ago, 49ers tight end Vernon Davis will look to get off to a better start in Week 1 against the Packers. Green Bay ranked last in the NFL in pass defense a year ago, giving up nearly 300 yards per game, and allowed an average of 10.8 Fantasy points to opposing tight ends, which was second worst in the league. In three career games against the Packers, Davis has recorded 308 yards on 13 catches with three touchdowns.
Analysis: Davis took a step back last season under new head coach Jim Harbaugh but has the second most touchdown grabs in the NFL since 2009 with 26. The additions of Randy Moss, Mario Manningham and A.J. Jenkins give Alex Smith more options in the passing game but Davis remains a go-to target for the 49ers. The 28-year-old appears to have a favorable matchup for Week 1 and is an elite tight end in Fantasy so consider Davis a solid option in all formats against the Packers.

Davis a San Francisco giant
News: San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis turned in one of the most impressive postseason runs in NFL history last year when he totaled 292 yards and four touchdowns in two games. Now, he's looking to carry that success into the 2012 campaign and dismiss the notion that he is an inconsistent player during the regular season. Davis recorded 67 catches and 792 yards last year, but only one of his six touchdowns came in the final six games. "I'm always looking for ways to improve," Davis told ESPN.com. "I never want to just be satisfied with where I'm at."
Analysis: At 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds, Davis' stellar combination of speed and brute strength to burst through tacklers provides him the makeup to be a star tight end. But he is prone to disappearing acts and notched fewer than 40 yards in six games last season, including two with less than 20 yards. But the 49ers loaded up on wide receivers during the offseason and Davis might see a reduction in defenses focusing on him in the passing game. He should also be assisted by the strides made by quarterback Alex Smith as the two connected on 15 passes of at least 11 yards last season. Fantasy owners shouldn't forget about Davis in upcoming drafts as he's worth a mid-round pick with some upside.

Davis adds more playoff TDs
News: After hauling in two touchdowns during the 49ers' first playoff game, TE Vernon Davis had another productive performance in Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Giants. He caught three passes for 112 yards with two more scores in the 20-17 overtime loss. He hauled in a 73-yard scoring strike from QB Alex Smith in the first quarter before being on the receiving end of a 28-yard touchdown in the second half. Davis caught 10 passes for 292 yards with four touchdowns in two playoff games.
Analysis: While Davis had a down campaign during the regular season, he put together two solid performances in the playoffs and was the lone big-play threat for San Francisco. He appears to have developed a nice rapport with Smith and with the same offensive coordinator coming back next season, he should be able to get back on track. Consider Davis a No. 1 Fantasy TE on Draft Day in 2012.

Davis provides late heroics
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis finished with seven receptions for 180 yards and two touchdowns during the 49ers' 36-32 victory over New Orleans in their NFC Divisional Playoff game on Saturday. It was the second time this season Davis posted multiple touchdowns in a game and first occasion since Week 5 against Tampa Bay. Davis hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from QB Alex Smith with nine seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to account for the game-winning score. He also had a 49-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter.
Analysis: Davis was hampered by inconsistency during the regular season, but shined during his playoff debut and easily registered more yards than the rest of the 49ers combined (119). He supplied several big plays on his 10 targets from QB Alex Smith and posted a sterling average of 25.7 yards per reception. Davis could arguably be considered San Francisco's best receiving option and will continue to be heavily targeted in the offense next week. Consider him a solid option in Fantasy playoff formats and a low-end No. 1 Fantasy TE in 2012 drafts.

Davis burns Rams for big yardage
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis reeled in more than 100 receiving yards for the second time this season in a Week 17 win over the Rams. Davis made eight catches, which produced a team-leading and season-best 118 yards. His biggest play of the game was a 44-yard reception on a deep ball from QB Alex Smith in the second quarter, which brought San Francisco into the red zone. The drive concluded with a 36-yard David Akers field goal.
Analysis: Davis didn't always come up big for Fantasy owners this season, but he could usually be trusted as a No. 1 TE. He could also help owners in postseason formats, though another 100-yard performance may be too much to expect, given the stiffer competition ahead. In any event, he will need to sit out the coming week, as the 49ers have a bye.

Davis hoping to buck trends vs. Rams
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis heads into Week 17 in St. Louis looking to finish out the regular season strong. The 49ers control their own destiny and a win would secure the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. For that reason, Davis will be playing a full game, especially with the rest of the San Francisco tight ends banged up. Unfortunately, the Rams, which can't stop the run, have given up the fewest Fantasy points per game to the tight end position on the season. St. Louis has allowed just one TE touchdown all year and that came back in Week 7 as Dallas' Jason Witten scored against them.
Analysis: The Rams have been excellent against tight ends this season and that includes the Week 13 game against San Francisco in which Davis caught just five passes for 32 yards without scoring. Davis will certainly have an uphill climb ahead of him against the Rams, as San Francisco will likely run the ball down St. Louis' throats. Davis' production has tailed off a bit at the end of the year, and he should likely be considered a low-end No. 1 or high-end No. 2 Fantasy TE for Week 17.

Davis nets 54 yards vs. Seahawks
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis was fairly productive in Week 16 against the Seahawks. Davis finished with four receptions for 54 yards in the 19-17 win, but was unable to get in the end zone. His longest catch of the day went for 17 yards and he was targeted a team-high eight times by Alex Smith in the victory.
Analysis: Davis played OK on Saturday afternoon, but most Fantasy owners were hoping for more. After sniffing 1,000 receiving yards in each of his last two seasons, Davis won't even come close to hitting that mark this season. He has only finished with more than 50 receiving yards in a single game twice this season, although he needs only one more touchdown to match his total from a year ago. However, with the 49ers already guaranteed a spot in the postseason, coach Jim Harbaugh could opt to sit Davis and some starters next week. Fantasy owners should keep an eye on how San Francisco will handle playing time moving forward. If Davis plays next week against the Rams, owners can consider the 27-year-old a No. 1 Fantasy TE.

V. Davis to start TD streak?
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis recorded his sixth touchdown of the season his last time out and will be looking to start a scoring streak in Week 16 against the Seahawks. Seattle ranks 13th in the league in pass defense, giving up nearly 221 yards per game, and has allowed an average of 7.6 points to opposing tight ends. When he faced the division foe earlier in the year, Davis caught five passes for 47 yards.
Analysis: Davis had his best game in weeks his last time out and should be able to keep things going on Saturday. The Seahawks have given up six touchdowns to tight ends thus far and are definitely better against the run than the pass. QB Alex Smith has been looking Davis' way more recently, as well, so continue to roll with the 27-year-old as a No. 1 Fantasy TE for Week 16.

Davis hauls in sixth TD
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis was able to haul in his sixth touchdown pass of the season in Week 15 against the Steelers. Davis was on the receiving end of a 1-yard scoring strike from Alex Smith, which capped off a five-play, 79-yard scoring drive in the third quarter. He finished with six receptions for a team-high 72 yards in the 20-3 victory and had a long of 31 yards. He was targeted 10 times by Smith in the win.
Analysis: After three straight underwhelming performances, Davis was able to turn in a solid performance on Monday night. He finally snapped his scoreless streak t three straight games and his 72 receiving yards were the most he has put up since back in Week 3. Now Davis will look to build on his latest effort when the 49ers head to Seattle in Week 16. He hauled in five receptions for 47 yards in the team's first meeting this season and has three touchdowns in nine career games against the Seahawks. Consider Davis a No. 1 Fantasy TE heading into his next matchup.

Davis, 49ers have to bring A-game
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis was pretty quiet last weekend against the Cardinals, something that won't fly in Week 15 versus Pittsburgh. The Steelers boast the best defense against the pass in the league as they allow just 179 passing yards per contest. Pittsburgh has given up 14 touchdowns through the air in 13 games. Opposing tight ends are averaging 6.85 Fantasy points per contest versus Pittsburgh. Davis has faced Pittsburgh once in his career. in that game he caught four passes for 56 yards.
Analysis: Davis hasn't done much for San Fran lately. He has just 102 receiving yards over his last three games, which doesn't hack it in Fantasy leagues. While he has plenty of potential he's just not getting it done when it counts for Fantasy owners. Because of a tough matchup this week, Fantasy owners should view Davis as more of a No. 2 TE option.

Davis hauls in one catch vs. Cardinals
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis was not much of a factor in Week 14 against the Cardinals. Davis finished with just one reception in the 21-19 loss, which went for 32 yards. He was targeted three times by Alex Smith in the contest and has now been held out of the end zone in three straight contests.
Analysis: Davis was once again not much of a factor on Sunday and has now totaled just 102 receiving yards over his last three contests. He has been held out of the end zone in each of those contests and now looks to have an extremely tough matchup in Week 15 against the Steelers. Pittsburgh is ranked second in pass defense and are allowing an average of just 6.9 Fantasy points to opposing TEs on the season. However, Davis remains a favorite target for Smith in the end zone, so consider him a low-end No. 1 Fantasy TE next Monday night.

Davis has TD history vs. Cardinals
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis has somewhat of a touchdown history against his Week 14 opponent -- the Cardinals. In 11 career games against Arizona, Davis has scored six touchdowns, including one in his meeting against them earlier this season. The Cardinals enter Sunday's contest ranked 25th in run defense, allowing 251 yards per game. Arizona has surrendered 13 touchdowns through the air and are allowing an average of 6.8 Fantasy points to opposing TEs on the season.
Analysis: Davis has caught nine passes over his last two game, but has only racked up 70 receiving yards over that stretch. He has also been held out of the end zone over that stretch, but looks to have a favorable matchup on Sunday. Arizona has struggled to defend the pass at times this season and Davis remains a favorite target of Alex Smith in the red zone. Consider him a No. 1 Fantasy TE against the Cardinals.

Davis misses out on TD in Week 13
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis could have had his sixth touchdown of the year in Week 13 against the Rams but he let the opportunity slip through his hands. QB Alex Smith launched a bomb his way in the second quarter but he was unable to come up with the grab in the end zone. He finished with five catches for 32 yards in the 26-0 win. Davis, who was targeted a team-high eight times, had a long reception of 13 and averaged 6.4 yards per grab.
Analysis: Davis has posted fewer than 40 yards receiving in each of the last two games and has been quiet in Fantasy of late. While his five scores on the year are pretty solid, some owners could have definitely used his dropped touchdown on Sunday. Hopefully he will be able to get back in the end zone next week against the Cardinals so continue to roll with Davis as a viable Fantasy TE in the majority of leagues for Week 14.

Davis likes facing Rams
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis will be facing a Rams team in Week 13 that he has had some success against in the past. In two games against the division foe a year ago, he caught seven passes for 149 yards. St. Louis enters Sunday ranked eighth in the league in pass defense, giving up just over 205 yards per contest, and have held opposing tight ends to an average of 2.5 Fantasy points.
Analysis: Davis will be looking for his third straight game with 70-plus yards against the Rams on Sunday and hopefully will have a nice bounce-back performance after posting just 38 yards on four catches his last time out. He has 25 touchdowns since the start of 2009, most by any TE in the NFL, and already has five scores this season. While the 49ers will likely run the ball more against the St. Louis, the 27-year-old is always a threat to score. Continue to view Davis as a No. 1 Fantasy TE for Week 13.

News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis recorded four catches for 38 yards during the 49ers 16-6 loss at Baltimore in Week 12 on Thursday night. It was his lowest output over his past four games as he managed just 9.5 yards per reception. Davis, who paced the team with 29 yards on three receptions at halftime, collected five targets from QB Alex Smith throughout the game.
Analysis: Davis became San Franciscos all-time leader in touchdowns for a tight end, but was unable to reach the end zone against the Ravens tough defense. Baltimore entered Thursdays game having permitted the second fewest Fantasy points to opposing tight ends this year (three). Davis remains a valuable member in the 49ers revamped passing attack and should be viewed as a No. 1 Fantasy TE in Week 13 against St. Louis.

Davis not fazed by short week
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis said he is not overly concerned that the 49ers will have to play their Week 12 contest at Baltimore less than five days after their previous game. Davis, who has scored a touchdown in each of his past two games, and San Francisco face the Ravens on Thursday night. Its a short turnaround, but I dont think like that," Davis said. "Im a warrior. Im a competitive guy. Anything helping my team, Im up for it. Im gonna pack my bag, grab my boots and all my bullets and Im coming."
Analysis: Davis became the 49ers' all-time leader in touchdown receptions for a tight end in Week 11 with his fifth touchdown of the season. He is now two shy of matching his total from last season (seven). Youve got to get as much sleep as you can, stay off your feet as much as possible and get lots of massages," Davis said about preparing for the short turnaround. Baltimore is permitting an average of three Fantasy points per game to opposing tight ends this year and have not allowed a touchdown to the position. Consider Davis a low-end No. 1 Fantasy TE for Week 12.

Davis breaks out, passes milestone
News: In a 23-7 victory Week 11 against the Cardinals, San Francisco TE Vernon Davis became the 49ers all-time leader in touchdown receptions for a tight end, passing Brent Jones with his 18-yard, third-quarter touchdown catch. Davis caught half of the 10 passes thrown his way, finishing with five catches for 67 yards.
Analysis: The 67 yards was the second-highest total for Davis during the 2011 season, and the touchdown was his fifth. Davis role in the offense has gone down this season, but the 10 targets was his highest number yet. He has now been targeted 24 times over his last four games, indicating that QB Alex Smith is looking his way more often. San Francisco travels to Baltimore in Week 12 to take on the Ravens on Thanksgiving, and Davis should be a No. 2 Fantasy TE, as the Ravens have yet to allow a touchdown to a TE this season.

Davis does not have strong past vs. Zona
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis has faced his Week 11 opponent Arizona 10 times in his career and has put up fairly pedestrian numbers against them, averaging just 7.4 Fantasy points per game. He has just three games in his career with more than 50 yards against them.
Analysis: While the 49ers have received much improved QB play as a result of Alex Smith's emergence as a passer, Davis has not been one of the beneficiaries. His yards per game average is down 15 yards from 2010, and his yards per catch average is down 5.2. On top of that, the Cardinals have been very stingy against opposing TEs, allowing just seven points per game, with just three touchdowns total. Because of his shaky history and the Cardinals' toughness against TEs, consider Davis a high-end No. 2 Fantasy TE for Week 11.

Davis halts scoreless skid
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis registered three catches for 40 yards and a touchdown during the 49ers' 27-20 victory over the Giants in Week 10. Davis hauled in a 31-yard pass from QB Alex Smith in the fourth quarter to help give San Francisco a 20-13 lead. It was his first touchdown since he scored twice against Tampa Bay in Week 5. Davis, who now has four touchdowns this season, has targeted four times by Smith in the game.
Analysis: Davis' yardage totals continue to be subpar, but he makes up for those lowly numbers with touchdowns. He has not topped 50 receiving yards in his past six games as he was held to just nine yards in his other two receptions in Sunday's game. He could lose some looks to fellow TE Delanie Walker, who paced the team with six catches for 69 yards. Consider Davis as a high-end No. 2 Fantasy TE for Week 11 against Arizona.

V. Davis looking to find end zone
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis has been held out of the end zone each of the last three games and will be looking to correct that problem in Week 10 against the Giants. New York ranks 17th in the league in pass defense, giving up under 239 yards per contest, and have allowed an average of 6.5 Fantasy points to opposing tight ends. Since the start of 2009, Davis has an NFL-best 23 touchdowns among tight ends.
Analysis: Davis has caught just nine passes for 76 yards over his last three games and will be going up against a tough defense on Sunday. The Giants allowed their first two touchdowns to tight ends a week ago, to Patriots TEs Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, so there is some hope that Davis will be able to find the end zone. But considering how much San Francisco has been running the ball of late, it looks as though the 27-year-old could be in for another slow performance. Consider Davis as more of a No. 2 Fantasy TE for Week 10.

Davis goes for 38 yards, fumbles
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis didn't have the best game on Sunday in a Week 9 victory at Washington. The 49ers didn't need to throw much against Washington and Davis was limited to just four receptions from QB Alex Smith. Davis caught four passes for 38 yards and that was good enough to finish second on the team behind Michael Crabtree. Davis did not get into the end zone in the game and was targeted a team-high seven times by Smith. Davis' long reception went for 21 yards and he also fumbled a ball away late.
Analysis: Davis continues to be a fairly-consistent pass-catching option for Smith and the 49ers. Davis really only has one big game in turns of yardage, but he scored three touchdowns combined in Weeks 4 and 5. The Niners need to go to Davis often in the passing game as Smith's other options are even more limited. That said, playing the Giants in Week 10, New York has been among the best in football at limiting the Fantasy production of opposing tight ends. The Giants have not allowed a TE to score yet this season and no TE has topped 41 yards against them since Fred Davis went for 105 Week 1 of the season for the Redskins. Davis should be considered just a No. 2 Fantasy option for Week 10 with the tough matchup.

Davis heading home Week 9
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis heads into Week 9 at Washington having struggled in his last two games. Davis has caught five passes over that span for just 35 yards and failed to score in either contest. That followed a three-game stretch in which Davis caught 15 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns. Since the beginning of 2009, Davis has 23 touchdowns, most among all NFL tight ends. He has the second-most receiving yards for a TE over that span as well.
Analysis: Davis is heading home in Week 9 as he was born in Washington D.C. and played his college football just miles away from Washington's FedEx Field at the University of Maryland. This will be Davis' first game at Washington since entering the NFL. Washington doesn't allow a ton of Fantasy points to tight ends, though Buffalo's Scott Chandler caught two touchdown passes against them Week 8. Three of the four touchdowns to tight ends the Redskins have allowed this season have come in the last three games, so Davis has a good shot at the end zone. Consider him a low-end No. 1 or high-end No. 2 Fantasy TE for the Week 9 game.

Davis says arm injury is non-issue
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis said Wednesday that the arm injury that forced him out of Sunday's game against the Browns for a short period was nerve-related. However, he said he is fine. San Francisco is at Washington in Week 9.
Analysis: Davis has had such an up-and-down season for San Francisco. His numbers aren't overly impressive because teams are focused on shutting him down and having the 49ers weak receiving corps beat them. Davis has posted some weak numbers the last two weeks, so healthy or not, he is a low-end No. 1 Fantasy TE for Week 9.

Davis quiet in Week 8
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis was not much of a factor ion Week 8 against the Browns. Davis finished with just three receptions for 27 yards in the 20-10 contest and appeared to sustain an arm injury in the win. He left the game briefly in the first quarter and was seen on the sideline getting his arm checked out by team trainers. However, Davis was able to return and finish out the contest. He had a long of 19 yards and was targeted three times by Alex Smith.
Analysis: Davis appears to avoided sustaining a major injury, although wasn't much of a factor on Sunday. After racking up a few receptions early in the contest, the Browns did a nice job of adjusting their coverage to limit his production the rest of the way. Davis has now racked up just eight receptions for 74 yards over his last three games and after getting off to a fast start. He will look to get himself going again in Week 9 against the Redskins. Consider him a low-end No. 1 Fantasy option heading into that matchup.

Davis back in action
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis was able to return in Week 8 against the Browns after briefly leaving with a arm injury. Davis appeared to sustain the injury after making a reception in the first quarter. He has two receptions for 26 yards thus far.
Analysis: Davis appears to be OK, as he was able to return to the contest. However, owners should keep an eye on how he fares for the remainder of the game. Check back after the game for the latest updates on Davis' production and status.

News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis left Week 8 against the Browns due to an arm injury. Davis appeared to sustain the injury after making a reception in the first quarter. He had two receptions for 26 yards prior to leaving the contest.
Analysis: Davis was having his arm checked out on the sidelines, but there still has been no official announcement from the team. Fantasy owners should continue and check back for more details as they become available. Hopefully his injury is nothing serious and he will be able to return.

Davis looking to get back on track
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis will be looking to get himself back on track in Week 8 against the Browns. Davis turned in his quietest performance of the season two Sunday's ago against the Lions, finishing with just two receptions for 8 yards in the contest. Cleveland enters Sunday's contest ranked second in pass defense, allowing 172 yards per game. The Browns have surrendered eight touchdowns through the air and are allowing an average of nine Fantasy points to opposing TEs on the season, which is tied for 26th overall.
Analysis: Davis had been red-hot before his stinker in Detroit, racking up 84 receiving yards and three touchdowns in his two prior contests. However, Alex Smith really struggled to throw the ball against the Lions, which unfortunately spilled over into Davis' production. While Cleveland has been no slouch on defense this season, they have struggled to defend the TE at times. Five of the eight passing touchdowns the Browns have surrendered in the air have been scored by TEs, so look for Smith to try and find Davis in the end zone on Sunday. Consider the 27-year-old a No. 1 Fantasy option in Week 8.

Davis not a factor in Week 6
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis had his quietest performance of the season in a 25-19 loss to the Lions in Week 6. The 49ers' pass offense was stymied in general, as they gained only 111 yards through the air, but Davis was shut down almost completely, as he made only two catches for eight yards. Both of Davis' receptions came in the first half, and he was not targeted once after halftime.
Analysis: Davis is generally one of the more reliable tight end options in Fantasy, but when QB Alex Smith struggles, as he did in Week 6, it can be tough sledding for any of the 49ers' receivers. Owners will have to replace Davis in Week 7, which is the 49ers' bye week, but it could be another tough week when he returns in Week 8. Davis will face the Browns, who have been tough against the pass this season. Even so, Davis will be worth considering as a low-end No. 1 TE option.

Davis getting TDs, if not targets
News: Five weeks into the season, 49ers TE Vernon Davis ranks just 17th at his position in targets with 26, but he is one of only nine tight ends to have scored at least three touchdowns this year. Two of those scores came against the Buccaneers last week, lifting his total number of touchdowns since the start of 2009 to 23. That makes Davis the leader among all tight ends in touchdowns over that period. In Week 6, he will face a Lions defense that has allowed opposing tight ends to reach the end zone in each of their last three games.
Analysis: Davis is not being targeted nearly as often as he was each of the last two seasons, but he has made up for it the last two weeks with a total of three touchdowns. The Lions haven't had much luck at stopping opposing tight ends, so Davis remains safe to use as a No. 1 Fantasy TE. Owners, however, should monitor his targets and yardage to see if better options may be available in weeks where he will face a tough pass defense.

Davis scores twice vs. Tampa Bay
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis was able to add to his touchdown total in Week 5 against the Buccaneers. He caught three passes for 39 yards with two scores in the 48-3 win. QB Alex Smith found him on a 23-yard scoring strike in the third quarter before hitting him again from 14 yards out in the fourth. Davis, who was targeted three times, also had one rush for minus-3 yards in the victory.
Analysis: Davis did not see any passes thrown his way in the first half but he was productive towards the end of the game and now has three touchdown grabs on the year. He has been able to help out Fantasy owners in each of the last three weeks and with Smith playing better this season, should be in for another solid campaign. With the Lions up next on the schedule, consider Davis as a No. 1 Fantasy TE for Week 6.

Davis to score again?
News: After recording his first touchdown of the year a week ago, 49ers TE Vernon Davis will be looking for similar success in Week 5 against the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay ranks 21st in the league against the pass, giving up 267 yards per game, and have allowed an average of seven Fantasy points to opposing tight ends. When Davis faced the Buccaneers a year ago, he had one catch for 3 yards.
Analysis: Davis has been very productive over the last two weeks and has made up for a slow start. He has a favorable matchup on Sunday, as the Buccaneers have not been very good at slowing down the passing game, and could be able to find the end zone again. While the 49ers have been inconsistent throwing the ball so far this season, Davis remains a reliable option for QB Alex Smith and should be considered a No. 1 Fantasy TE for Week 5.

TE Davis has first 2011 score
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis has now scored in his last two games against the Eagles after finding the end zone in Week 4. Davis scored on a 9-yard reception in the third quarter as he finished with four catches for 45 yards. His longest reception went 26 yards and he was targeted six times in the game. Davis had 104 yards and one touchdown last season against Philadelphia.
Analysis: After the first two games this season it looked like it was going to be a long season for Davis. However, he has turned it around the last two weeks. Davis had a 100-yard game in Week 3 and now has his first touchdown of the 2011 campaign. Continue to view Davis as a No. 1 Fantasy TE for Week 5 against the Bucs.

Davis has good history vs. Eagles
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis finally delivered the performance Fantasy owners were looking for in Week 3. He will now look to keep that momentum going heading into Week 4 against the Eagles. The last time Davis took the field against Philadelphia in 2010 he posted five catches for 104 yards and one touchdown. He has 14 catches for 222 yards in his last three games against the Eagles. TEs are averaging 8.0 Fantasy points per week against Philadelphia this season. Unfortunately, Tony Gonzalez has been the only TE to score against Philadelphia through three games.
Analysis: Davis was upset about his production through the first two games, so he spoke up and coach Jim Harbaugh listened. The result was a solid performance from Davis in Week 3. The 49ers know how valuable Davis is to the passing game and so do the opponents, which is why they spend a great deal of time game planning for talented TE since the Niners receiving corps is suspect. Still, Davis will be part of the 49ers game plan and can be considered a viable Fantasy TE for Week 4. Let's just hope they have success getting him the football.

Davis leads Niners in receiving
News: San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis led his team in receiving in Week 3 at Cincinnati. He caught eight passes for 114 yards, getting targeted a team-high nine times. No other 49ers receiver had more than 25 yards receiving.
Analysis: Davis was the only Niners receiver to milk a good performance out of Alex Smith's pedestrian 201-yard effort with no touchdowns. For Davis, the output was more than he had over his previous two weeks combined. San Francisco's pass offense leaves much to be desired, but Davis should remain a very prominent target for San Francisco, and one of the more highly targeted tight ends in Fantasy. For that reason, he remains a solid play for Week 4 at Philadelphia and beyond.

Davis looks to get going
News: In Week 3, 49ers TE Vernon Davis will face a Bengals defense that allowed a pair of touchdowns to opposing tight ends over the first two weeks of the season. Both touchdowns came in Week 1 against the Browns, with Benjamin Watson and Evan Moore each finding the end zone. Davis voiced his concerns after Sunday's game against the Cowboys his lack of productivity in the passing game. After talking with coach Jim Harbaugh, who pointed out that Davis has seen more coverage in 2011, he seems more calm heading into Week 3. Last year teams started to do it but backed away from it, Davis said. This year, theyre trying to keep their eyes on me. Thats what I asked Harbaugh -- what could we do? He said hell get back to me later on.
Analysis: Davis caught five passes for 46 yards and a touchdown in his only previous game against Cincinnati in 2007. He caught five passes for 47 yards in Week 1 against the Seahawks and was a virtual non-factor in Week 2 against the Cowboys with only two grabs for 18 yards. The Bengals could prove to be a fruitful matchup for Davis, as they struggled in Week 1 against two average tight ends in the red zone. In Week 2, the Broncos barely targeted their tight ends. Consider Davis a viable starting option for this matchup despite his slow start.

Davis quiet in Week 2
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis caught both passes thrown his way in Week 2 against Dallas. The bad news is that he got just 18 yards on those catches. The 49ers would end up losing the game, 27-24, in overtime.
Analysis: Davis couldn't get going, but with Michael Crabtree and Braylon Edwards sidelined with injuries, the Cowboys focused their attention on Davis. The 49ers are still adjusting to the new offensive playbook, but Davis has to get involved. San Francisco faces Cincinnati in Week 3, a team that played decent pass defense against the Broncos on Sunday. Despite his lack of production for Fantasy owners, Davis should remain active next week as he's a No. 1 TE option.

Davis will be catalyst for San Fran
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis gets a team in Week 2 that he's played just once in his career. In that lone outing versus Dallas, Davis caught one pass for 47 yards. The Cowboys gave up six catches for 94 yards and a touchdown New York's tight ends in Week 1. Davis led his team with five receptions and 47 yards last Sunday, in an offensive gameplan that lacked bells and whistles.
Analysis: Davis will likely be the go-to guy again for Alex Smith as they have a comfort zone on the field. The task won't be easy as the Cowboys allowed just five touchdowns to tight ends in 2010. But the secondary is beat up and Davis is a tough customer to handle. Fantasy owners should continue to view Davis as a No. 1 TE option this Sunday.

Davis paces 49ers' offense
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis led his team in receptions and receiving yards in Week 1 against Seattle. He was targeted six times, catching five passes from Alex Smith for 47 yards. The 49ers would win the game, 33-17, despite Davis and the offense not airing it out.
Analysis: This was the second time in Davis' last eight division games where he didn't have at least 70 yards receiving. San Francisco hosts Dallas in Week 2, a team that allowed just five touchdowns to tight ends in 2010. But the secondary is beat up right now, so Davis could thrive. Fantasy owners should keep him active as he's a top tier TE option.

Davis thrives versus NFC West
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis caught 13 passes for 143 yards with one score in his two contests against Seattle in 2010. In the second game of last year he had a 42-yard touchdown catch to his credit. No matter which division foe he faces, Davis has thrived racking up 70 yards or more in six of the last seven division games.
Analysis: Since the start of 2009, Davis has 20 touchdowns, the most by any tight end in the league. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman admitted that the offense on Sunday probably wont have as many bells and whistles as it ordinarily would if the team had a full offseason including minicamps. A lot of these guys I met a month ago, he said. The time frame has been shorter, so youre not gonna have as much volume. No matter what, Davis will play a big role in the 49ers' offense, as he's a favorite target for Alex Smith. Fantasy owners should keep Davis active heading into Week 1 as he's an elite Fantasy TE.

49ers TE excused for personal reasons
News: 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said TE Vernon Davis missed practice Tuesday for personal reasons. Davis has two catches for 19 yards and no touchdowns in the preseason.
Analysis: Davis hasn't made many headlines this preseason, so when he was absent from practice on Tuesday everyone took notice. Luckily, it's not because of an injury and Davis' status for the season opener isn't in doubt. Even though he hasn't had a great preseason from a numbers standpoint, Davis is going to play a big part on offense for San Francisco. He should threaten for 900 yards for a third straight season and should continue to be treated as a high-end No. 1 Fantasy TE.

Davis enjoying new offense
News: The Sacramento Bee reports that 49ers TE Vernon Davis called new coach Jim Harbaugh's offense "tight end friendly" after taking part in player-only workouts with QB Alex Smith.
Analysis: Last year in his fifth NFL season, Davis had 56 receptions for 914 yards and seven TDs. We expect Davis to have another outstanding season under Harbaugh, and he should be considered a No. 1 Fantasy TE in all leagues. Keep an eye on who is playing QB for the 49ers between Smith and rookie Colin Kaepernick , which will help determine just how good Davis will be, but he should be drafted around Round 5 in all formats and has the chance for another big year in 2011.

Davis ready for 2011
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis is looking forward to the 2011 season. Davis wants to carry the load this year on offense. As part of his training regimen, he has been practicing Bikram yoga - done in a room heated to more than 100 degrees - twice a week along with his usual plyometrics, cardio and weight lifting. He typically takes the weekends off to rest. "Football is my heart and soul. I'd do anything for football," he said. "I'm very serious about the sport." He became the highest-paid tight end in NFL history last September when he signed a five-year contract extension that pays him $37 million overall, with $34 million guaranteed. The 27-year-old would like nothing more than to return to being the dominant playmaker he was in 2009, when he tied Antonio Gates' NFL record for touchdowns by a tight end with 13 and made his first Pro Bowl. Last year in his fifth NFL season, Davis still had 56 receptions for 914 yards and seven TDs.
Analysis: We expect Davis to have another outstanding season, and he should be considered a No. 1 Fantasy TE in all leagues. Keep an eye on who is playing QB for the 49ers, which will help determine just how good Davis will be, but he should be drafted around Round 5 in all formats and has the chance for another big year in 2011.

Davis, Smith connect again
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis caught a short pass from Alex Smith, and took it to the house in Week 17. He would cut across the field and put the hammer down as he found the end zone and past the Arizona defenders. He would go 59 yards for the score. Davis was targeted six times, catching three passes for 96 yards. Davis was a question mark entering the season finale has he had been dealing with a thumb injury. Smith and Davis have hooked up for touchdowns in six of Smith's past seven starts. The 49ers would beat the Cardinals, 38-7, to finish out the season.
Analysis: Davis finished the season with 56 catches for 914 yards and seven touchdowns. Davis and Smith have had good chemistry the last two seasons, but now Smith's future with the team is up in the air. Davis is one of the best tight ends in the NFL, but needs consistency at the quarterback position to take the next step. Fantasy owners should view Davis as a high-end TE option on Draft Day in 2011, worthy of a mid-round pick.

Davis active for finale
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis was active for Week 17. He's been dealing with a thumb injury, but decided to give it a go against the Cardinals. n the 49ers last meeting with the Cardinals, Davis had just two catches for 32 yards. Opposing team's tight ends average just under four catches per outing for around 43 yards. That comes out to just 6.8 Fantasy points.
Analysis: Davis was left off the Pro Bowl roster, so he may have something to prove in Week 17. The 49ers really have nothing to play for except trying to get on the same page. Despite the quarterback situation a mess, Davis remains a high-end Fantasy TE in all leagues.

Davis left off Pro Bowl roster
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis had touchdown in his last home game against Arizona -- back in 2009. Over his last five games versus the Cardinals, Davis has 14 receptions for 175 yards and two scores. Since the start of 2009, Davis has 19 receiving touchdowns, the most by tight end. Despite that fact, Davis was left off the Pro Bowl roster this year. In the 49ers last meeting with the Cardinals, Davis had just two catches for 32 yards. Opposing team's tight ends average just under four catches per outing for around 43 yards. That comes out to just 6.8 Fantasy points.
Analysis: Davis will have Alex Smith tossing him the ball on Sunday, and despite Smith's struggles this year, Davis is his favorite target. Davis is one of the best pass-catching tight ends in the NFL -- hes second in the NFC in receiving yards among tight ends (818, behind Dallas Jason Witten), second in touchdowns (6, also behind Witten) and first in yards-per-reception (15.4). All things considered Fantasy owners should view Davis as a No. 1 TE option for Week 17.

Davis bounces back vs. Rams
News: After only recording a 4-yard catch in his last outing, 49ers TE Vernon Davis got back on track in Week 16 against the Rams. He caught three passes for 70 yards in the 25-17 loss. Davis was targeted seven times in the game and had a long reception of 29.
Analysis: Despite his slow performance a week ago, Davis remains one of the better pass-catching tight ends in the league and has 13 catches for 270 yards and two touchdowns over his last four games. He is a serious threat in the passing game and knows how to make plays in open field. Inconsistent quarterback play has hindered his numbers this season but he should be able to finish strong with Arizona left on the schedule. When the division foes met earlier in the year, Davis had two catches for 32 yards. Continue to view the 26-year-old as a solid Fantasy TE in all formats heading into Week 17.

Can Davis bounce back?
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis had a long afternoon against the league's top pass defense, as he caught a single pass for 4 yards in a Week 15 loss at San Diego. In Week 16, Davis should have a much easier time going up against a Rams pass defense that ranks 18th in the league. While the Rams have allowed just three touchdowns to tight ends all season, they have been fairly generous at allowing them yardage, ranking 13th in least yardage allowed to tight ends.
Analysis: Given the Rams' track record against tight ends, Davis could go a second straight game without a touchdown, but he should get back to his more typical reception and yardage numbers. He comes into Sunday's game as the fourth-ranked tight end in Fantasy, and he will be a must-start option yet again. Keep Davis active in all formats for Week 16.

Davis hits season-low
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis not only failed to extend his touchdown streak to three games on Thursday night, but he had his worst game of the season in the Week 15 loss to the Chargers. Davis was targeted just once in the entire game, and hauled in the 4-yard pass from QB Alex Smith.
Analysis: The Chargers defense bracketed the speedy TE on nearly every play and forced Smith to find other options in the passing game, and the troubled QB finished the night with just 165 yards on the night. Davis racked up nearly 200 yards and two scores in the two games prior to Thursday night's blowout, and San Diego shifted the defense his way to prevent him from gashing them as well. In Week 16, the 'Niners take on the Rams. We like Davis to rebound in that matchup and he should continue to be utilized as a top-notch Fantasy option. Offensive coordinator Mike Johnson will have to find new ways to get his best offensive player the ball and he has nine days in between games to do it.

Davis to extend TD streak?
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis has scored a touchdown in each of his last two games, one from QB Troy Smith and the other from Alex Smith. In Week 15 against the Chargers, A. Smith will get his second straight start. Davis has scored the third-most Fantasy points among TEs this season (Antonio Gates, Jason Witten). He's established a good rapport with both QBs this season, so in any scenario has the chance to get behind the Chargers defense that allows an average of 6.77 Fantasy points per game to TEs.
Analysis: Davis has picked up the pace over the last two weeks with starting RB -- and focal point of the offense -- out for the season. He is averaging nearly 100 yards receiving and adds a TD on average without Gore in the lineup. San Diego has been a stout pass defense overall (No. 1 in the NFL), but against the TE they have been below average. They are responsible for allowing (tied) the third-most scores to opposing TEs on the year. It's also logical to think that the Chargers would open up some sort of lead against the 49ers on Thursday night, forcing San Fran to throw the ball even more than they want to -- which plays to Davis' value. Consider him to be a must-start Fantasy option in Week 15.

Davis gets into end zone again
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis recorded a touchdown for the second consecutive game in the Week 14 blowout victory over Seattle. He didn't wait long, either. Davis welcomed Alex Smith back to the helm of the Niners as the duo connected for a 42-yard touchdown on the first drive of the game. Davis had two catches for 64 yards on the opening drive and finished with five grabs for 70 yards and the score in the game. He was targeted a team-high seven times by Smith.
Analysis: It doesn't seem to matter which Smith is throwing the passes -- Alex or Troy -- Davis is going to keep having big games. Davis now has six touchdowns on the season and has nine catches for 196 yards and two scores in his last two games. San Francisco plays at San Diego in Week 15 and Davis might get a chance to prove to Antonio Gates in person that he's overtaking him as the league's top pass-catching tight end. The Chargers allow decent points to opposing Fantasy tight ends, so consider Davis a must-start No. 1 option.

V. Davis stays must-start quality
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis continues to blossom into perhaps the best two players at his position in the game. He trails only Antonio Gates in total Fantasy points among NFL tight ends and has been targeted more times than has Gates this season. Just last week, Davis hooked up with QB Troy Smith for a career-high 126 yards receiving and a 66-yard touchdown. Davis enters Week 14 against Seattle with 18 touchdown receptions since the beginning of 2009, tied for the most by any NFL tight end. Davis will have Alex Smith back throwing the passes in Week 14.
Analysis: Davis has been sensational for the 49ers and has owned the Seahawks recently. He has 14 catches for 184 yards and a touchdown in his last two games against them, one coming in Week 1 this year. The Seahawks have been solid against tight ends this year, but Davis still had a solid game against them Week 1. Davis has a touchdown in five of his last six games in December or January and should be active as a No. 1 Fantasy TE in all leagues for Week 14.

Davis goes off for 126 yards, TD
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis had quite a game in losing fashion Week 13 against the Packers. Davis led everyone -- and Greg Jennings had 122 yards receiving -- with four catches for 126 yards. Davis, who averaged 31.5 yards per catch, had a long grab of 66 yards in the game. That put the Niners within one point just before halftime.
Analysis: Davis is amazingly a deep-ball threat as a tight end and the best receiving option on the 49ers bar none. The touchdown was his first since Week 7, but Davis remains a No. 1 Fantasy TE in all league and formats heading into Week 14 against Seattle.

Davis struggling with Niners winning
News: The San Francisco 49ers are actually winning of late. Unfortunately, that has also meant mediocre production from TE Vernon Davis. Davis has averaged just two catches and 31.5 yards per game as the Niners have won three of the last four with QB Troy Smith at the helm.
Analysis: San Francisco plays at Green Bay in Week 13 and Davis aims for a third straight meeting in a row with a touchdown against the Packers. He had six catches for 108 yards and a TD in his only career game in Green Bay. Davis, who's 17 receiving touchdowns since the start of 2009 is tied for the most by a tight end, has scored a touchdown in four of his last five games in December/January. The Packers have been middle of the road against opposing tight ends and Tony Gonzalez just scored a touchdown against them last week. Continue to roll with Davis as a No. 1 Fantasy TE heading into Week 13 and hope that Smith can find him.

Davis quiet in Week 12
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis was relatively quiet in Week 12 against the Cardinals. Davis was targeted four times in the 27-6 win, but finished with just two receptions for 32 yards. He had a long of 16 yards in the victory.
Analysis: Davis pretty much a non-factor on Monday night, but so were most of San Francisco's receivers, as the 49ers were able to gash the Cardinals on the ground. He appears to be over an ankle injury he suffered back in Week 11, which hopefully will allow him to get back on track in Week 13 against the Packers. Frank Gore is likely out for the season with a fractured hip, so the 49ers may have to put the ball a little more than they are used too. That could lead to an increase in targets for Davis, so consider him a No. 1 Fantasy TE against Green Bay.

Davis officially ruled active
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis (ankle) has officially been ruled active for Week 12 against the Cardinals. Davis was able to practice without any restrictions this week. Arizona enters Monday's matchup ranked 27th in pass defense and has allowed average of seven Fantasy points to opposing TEs on the season. Davis has averaged 40 receiving yards and scored four touchdowns in eight career meetings against the Cardinals.
Analysis: Davis has recorded 17 receiving touchdowns since the start of 2009, which tied for most by tight end in that span. He is ranked fifth in terms of Fantasy points, among all TEs this season and can be considered a No. 1 Fantasy TE heading into the Monday night game.

Davis has averaged 40 receiving yards and scored four touchdowns in eight career meetings against the Cardinals.
Analysis: Davis left in Week 11 against Tampa Bay with an ankle injury, but was able to practice all week and is expected to play on Sunday. He has recorded 17 receiving touchdowns since the start of 2009, which tied for most by tight end in that span. He is ranked fifth in terms of Fantasy points, among all TEs this season and can be considered a No. 1 Fantasy TE heading into Sunday's matchup.

Davis hurt in Week 11
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis left the game in Week 11 against Tampa Bay with an ankle injury. He said afterward it wasn't serious. He had just one catch for 3 yards in the 49ers 21-0 loss to the Buccaneers. He was targeted for a long pass from Troy Smith, but the pass would fall incomplete and the 49ers would turn the ball over on downs. The Niners were shut out at home for the first time since a 7-0 loss to Atlanta on Oct. 9, 1977.
Analysis: Davis is having a good year for San Francisco despite the changes with offensive coordinators and quarterbacks. Since the start of 2009, Davis has 17 receiving touchdowns, tied for most by tight end in that span. Unfortunately Fantasy didn't see Davis add to that total in Week 11. The tight end position has been hit hard with injuries this year and now Davis is the latest to be struck. It doesn't seem like Davis considers it too serious which is good news for San Francisco and Fantasy owners. Continue to monitor Davis heading into Week 12 as the 49ers face the Cardinals on Monday night. He'll get an extra day of rest, so he might be fine for the game. If he's healthy, owners should view him as a No. 1 TE option.

News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis suffered an ankle injury in Week 11 against Tampa Bay and his return was questionable. He had just one catch for 3 yards in the game.

Davis looks to stay hot for 49ers
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis has scored a touchdown in four of his last six games. He'll look to to continue that trend in Week 11 as the 49ers host the Buccaneers. He's faced the Bucs once before in his career -- back in 2007 -- and caught three passes for 30 yards and a touchdown. Fast forward to this year to where the Bucs are giving up 210 passing yards per game. Tampa Bay has also allowed opposing team's tight ends to find the end zone just three times this year.
Analysis: Davis hasn't scored in two straight games, but owners should not be too concerned. He's having a good year and has been one of the best in the business the last few years. Since the start of 2009, Davis has 17 receiving touchdowns, tied for most by tight end in that span. As for the quarterback situation in San Fran, Davis will definitely have a Smith throwing him the ball, it's just unclear if it'll be Alex or Troy. Fantasy owners should view Davis as a No. 1 TE option for Week 11 no matter who is throwing him the ball. With so many injuries to tight ends this year, Davis is an elite option.

V. Davis has TD called back in Week 10
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis had a solid game against the Rams in Week 10 but it could have been even better if not for a penalty. With his team down by four late in the game, Davis caught a 43-yard touchdown pass from QB Troy Smith that should have been the go-ahead touchdown, but a holding penalty by T Anthony Davis negated the play. Despite not finding the end zone, Davis had a solid game by catching four passes for 79 yards in the 23-20 overtime win. He was targeted for six passes from Smith and averaged 19.8 yards per reception in the victory.
Analysis: Davis has now gone two straight games without a touchdown grab after recording one in each of the four games prior. Still his performance on Sunday outshined the one catch for 12 yards he had the week before and was his best performance since Week 5. Davis, who injured his ankle in Week 8, looked to be all full strength against the Rams and could have Alex Smith back in the huddle as early as next Sunday against the Buccaneers. Davis has four touchdowns on the year, and 17 since 2009, so Fantasy owners should continue to view the former first-round pick as an elite option at a thin position.

TE Davis past ankle injury
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis, who injured his ankle in Week 8 against the Broncos, appears ready to play in Week 10 against the Rams as the 49ers are coming off a bye. Davis did not appear on the team's injury report. Davis aims for his third game in a row with a touchdown against St. Louis. He has totaled 18 catches for 235 yards and three touchdowns in eight career games against the Rams. St. Louis is holding TEs to 3.8 Fantasy points per week, which is third lowest in the NFL. Brandon Pettigrew has been the only tight end to score a touchdown against St. Louis this season.
Analysis: Davis has four touchdowns in his last five games and 17 TD receptions since 2009. After a few years of looking like an overrated first-round pick, Davis has finally come into his own in the NFL and has emerged as a high-end Fantasy option. Even with the tough matchup in Week 10, you have to start Davis in Fantasy since he is an elite option at a thin position.

Davis doesn't last long Week 8
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis, who came into Week 8 against the Broncos as questionable with an ankle injury, didn't last long as he exited in the first half because of the injury. Davis had one catch for 12 yards before leaving the game and he did not return to the game in the second half. Davis entered Week 8 riding a four-game touchdown streak. His replacement, Delanie Walker, finished with a team-high five catches for 85 yards.
Analysis: Davis' absence is a huge blow for the 49ers, especially since QB Troy Smith made his first start in place of the injured Alex Smith in Week 8 and could have used Davis for the entire game since he is one of the team's top threats in the passing game. Davis hasn't missed a game since the 2007 season, so he is lucky that the bye week comes at an opportune time. The 49ers return to action in Week 10 against the Rams, so Davis gets some extra time to rest. He is usually a must-start Fantasy TE when healthy.

V. Davis active at Wembley
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis was not listed among the inactives for San Francisco's Week 8 game in London vs. the Broncos. Davis was questionable with an ankle injury.
Analysis: Davis will have a new quarterback throwing him the ball in Troy Smith on Sunday. The Broncos have a suspect pass defense that has allowed 11 touchdowns this year, and Davis has caught a touchdown pass in four straight games. Analysis: Davis will have a new quarterback throwing him the ball in Troy Smith this Sunday. The Broncos have a suspect pass defense that has allowed 11 touchdowns this year, and Davis has caught a touchdown pass in four straight games. Davis hurt, has new QB
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis was limited in practice Wednesday with an injured ankle. He is expected to play in Week 8 against Denver in London, but he also has a new QB for this game with Troy Smith replacing the injured Alex Smith (shoulder). Davis did not miss any significant time in Week 7 at Carolina and finished with four catches for 74 yards and a touchdown against the Panthers.
Analysis: Davis enters Week 8 as a No. 1 Fantasy TE in all leagues, but his value is slightly lower with Troy Smith as the starting QB. Still, the Broncos have a suspect pass defense that has allowed 11 passing touchdowns this year, and Davis remains too good to bench in any format. Continue to keep him active as long as his ankle is 100 percent healthy.

Davis extends TD streak to four
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis came into Week 7 against the Panthers hobbled by a knee injury, but once the game started he didn't seem bothered by the issue. Davis' first catch went for 53 yards on the first drive before he was pulled down at the 1-yard line. On the next play, Davis scored on a 1-yard touchdown from Alex Smith. Davis finished with four catches for 74 yards. He was targeted eight times.
Analysis: Davis has a touchdown in four straight games. He continues to be one of Smith's favorite targets. The only disappointing news is that Smith left Week 7 with a non-throwing shoulder injury. His status for Week 8 against the Broncos will be determined. David Carr had trouble passing the ball after he replaced Smith, so if he has to start, then Davis might find it tougher to put up stats next week. Still, he is still too talented to sit in Fantasy.

News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis (probable, knee) was not listed among the inactives on Sunday and will start in Week 7 at Carolina.
Analysis: Davis is currently fourth among Fantasy TEs in Fantasy points scored this season with his 28 receptions for 348 yards and three scores. He is a major weapon in the San Francisco passing game and the team cannot afford to go without him Week 7 against Carolina. The Panthers have been solid against the pass this season and a tight end failed to make a catch against them in the Week 5 game against the Bears. No tight end has scored on the Panthers this season, though Jeremy Shockey and David Thomas combined for 100 yards and 11 catches Week 4. Davis remains a No. 1 Fantasy TE.

Davis getting MRI on knee
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis will be getting an MRI on his knee, which he hurt on the play he scored his TD on against the Raiders in the Week 6 game. We just want to make sure were smart about it and everything is stable, coach Mike Singletary said on Monday. Davis scored a touchdown for his third consecutive week in the game as he had four grabs for 35 yards.

Another TD catch for Davis in Week 6
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis continued his stellar play against the Raiders in Week 6. He caught four passes for 35 yards and a touchdown in the 17-9 win. After a 64-yard run by RB Frank Gore, QB Alex Smith hit Davis on the next play for a 17-yard touchdown strike. It was the third game in a row in which Davis has caught a touchdown pass. Davis, who was targeted a team-high seven times, averaged 8.8 yards per reception in the victory.
Analysis: Davis has become one of the favorite targets for Smith and has reaped the benefits of his quarterback playing better. Although he has just one 100-yard receiving game this season, finding the end zone in three straight weeks definitely makes up for it. Davis' 6-3, 250-pound frame makes him a nightmare matchup for both safeties and linebackers, so expected to get better as the season goes one. San Francisco takes on Carolina and their fifth ranked passing defense in Week 7. The Panthers have also allowed just five Fantasy points to opposing tight ends this season but Davis remains a No. 1 Fantasy TE as he is a rare breed.

Davis looking for end zone in Week 6
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis has caught a touchdown pass in his last two games and will face a Raiders defense in Week 6 that has given up some points to opposing tight ends. Oakland has given up an average of 9.60 Fantasy points through the first five weeks but ranks 10th in the league against the pass, giving up just 198 yards per game. Davis has caught 24 passes for 313 yards and two touchdowns through the first five games.
Analysis: Davis could be in line for a big game in Week 6 as the Raiders allowed TE Antonio Gates to catch five passes for 92 yards and a touchdown a week ago. QB Alex Smith has been inconsistent so far in 2010 but his relationship with Davis has not changed much. Davis had his first 100-yard game of the season last week and should have another productive game against Oakland on Sunday. Continue to view the former Terrapin as a No. 1 Fantasy TE and must-start for Week 6.

Davis scores in second straight
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis caught five passes for 104 yards and a touchdown in the Week 5 loss to the Eagles. He has now scored a TD in consecutive games after being held scoreless in the first three games of the season. When the Niners switched to new offensive coordinator Mike Johnson in Week 4, Davis shared his excitement with the decision, and his production reflected that. It was his first 100-yard game of the season. Davis was targeted seven times by QB Alex Smith.
Analysis: Davis was very quiet in the first half but Smith got him the ball when the team needed it most, including on the fourth quarter TD that cut the deficit to 7 points with less than four minutes remaining. Smith relied on Davis throughout the second half. In Week 6, the Niners host the Raiders, whose defense has allowed three different TEs to score touchdowns against them in five games this season. Davis should still be considered a No. 1 Fantasy TE against Oakland in Week 6.

Davis looking for TD in second straight
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis is excited about the switch to offensive coordinator Mike Johnson; after the Week 4 loss, Davis knew it would be efficient. "He tried to change the tendencies. He tried his best to get the playmakers the ball," Davis said. "We had it. We beat ourselves. Too many penalties, mistakes and all those things." Davis and the rest of the team will have another week of practice with Johnson calling the shots by the time they host the Eagles in Week 5. Davis is coming off his best game of the season; he caught his first touchdown of the year in Week 4. The Eagles defense allowed Lions TE Brandon Pettigrew to reach 100 yards against them in Week 2. Davis had three catches for 43 yards against the Eagles in 2009.
Analysis: Davis' comments after the loss hinted at the Niners' offense becoming more unpredictable and getting playmakers the ball; something he could benefit from the most. Davis is San Francisco'a most targeted receiving threat (30 targets) and those numbers should increase the more Johnson tries to get 'playmakers' the ball. Davis remains a solid No. 1 Fantasy TE against the Eagles in Week 5. Philadelphia's defense is stout against the pass, allowing just 168 yards per game (5th in th NFL).

Davis finally gets in end zone
News: Niners TE Vernon Davis was held under 50 yards receiving for the second straight game Week 4 at Atlanta, but he did get in the end zone for the first time this season, catching a short pass from QB Alex Smith in the first quarter and taking it 12 yards for the score, stretching out for the last 2. He finished with four catches for 36 yards.
Analysis: The 49ers' passing game has struggled this season, limiting Davis' potential, but he's still their top receiving target and will continue to get plenty of looks in the red zone. His yardage has been down recently, but he's one of the few tight ends capable of performing like a wide receiver and remains a clear-cut No. 1 option in Fantasy. Keep him active for Week 5 against the Eagles.

Davis in search of first TD
News: After finishing the 2009 season with a touchdown in six of his final seven games, 49ers TE Vernon Davis has been shut out of the end zone in the first three games of the 2010 season. He looks to break his scoring slump in Week 4 against the Falcons. Davis has 12 catches for 128 yards and no scores in two career games against Atlanta. After holding tight ends to five catches for 51 yards in their first two games, the Saints finally broke through against the Falcons in Week 3, totaling 11 catches for 102 yards and one touchdown from tight ends.
Analysis: Davis might not have a touchdown in 2010, but he hasn't been totally useless. He is second in the NFC among TEs with 15 catches and third in the NFC among TEs with 173 yards. Now that Mike Johnson has taken over as offensive coordinator, Davis' numbers could go up. He is still a good option as a No. 1 Fantasy TE for Week 4.

V. Davis has poor afternoon
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis caught just three passes for 22 yards in a Week 3 loss at Kansas City. He was targeted six times.
Analysis: This was Davis' worst performance since Week 9 of last season when he caught three passes for 16 yards in a 10-6 win over the Bears. The Chiefs really shut down the WRs and TEs on Sunday, and QB Alex Smith had another poor outing overall. Heading into Week 5 against the Falcons, Davis remains a must-start Fantasy option regardless of this underwhelming output. He has caught 12 passes for 123 yards in two meetings with Atlanta.

V. Davis facing Chiefs for 1st time
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis will take on the Chiefs for the first time in his career in Week 3. Kansas City, who rank 25th vs. the pass this season, gave up 76 yards and a touchdown to Chargers TE Antonio Gates in Week 1 and 62 yards to Browns TE Benjamin Watson in Week 2.
Analysis: The Chiefs were in the middle of the pack against Fantasy TEs last season, so we're not sure why they're struggling so much in 2010 so far. Davis has put up consecutive plus 70-yard receiving efforts to start off the season and is one of QB Alex Smith's favorite targets, so he should be in for another nice points haul in Week 3. Continue to view him as an elite No. 1 Fantasy TE.

Davis off to a steady start
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis had another decent game in Week 2 against the Saints. Davis caught four passes for 78 yards in the 25-22 loss on Monday night. He was targeted seven times and averaged 19.5 yards a reception. He also had a long of 41 yards, which was San Francisco's longest pass play of the game. Davis didn't score a touchdown in the loss, but did pull in a two-point conversion. Trailing by eight late in the fourth quarter, the 49ers punched one in the end zone to cut the lead to two. With no choice but to go for two, Alex Smith hit Davis right at the goal line. He was ruled down on the 1-yard line originally, but the play was overturned by instant replay.
Analysis: While Davis didn't score a touchdown Monday, he still was able to put up decent stats. He has put up consecutive plus 70-yard receiving efforts to start off the season and is one of Smith's favorite targets. Davis is a huge part of San Francisco's offensive plans this season and should be in line for some big games. His combination of size and speed creates a mismatch with just about every defense in this league. Davis figures to have a favorable matchup against the Chiefs in Week 3. Kansas City allowed 226 yards to backup quarterback Seneca Wallace in Week 2. Consider Davis a No. 1 Fantasy TE heading into Week 3.

Davis looks to continue streak
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis, who was San Francisco's leading receiver against the Seahawks, has caught a touchdown pass in three consecutive home games. He will look to extend that streak during San Francisco's home opener against the Saints. New Orleans held Brett Favre and the Vikings to just 171 yards passing in Week 1. Davis has only averaged 37 yards receiving with one touchdown in three career games against the Saints. However, in his last home game against New Orleans, Davis had six catches for 71 yards and a TD.
Analysis: Davis was was definitely QB Alex Smith's favorite target on Sunday. He was one of the few offensive players on the 49ers who stated well in the loss. He will likely be Smith's go-to-guy again all season and is a huge part of the 49ers offensive plans this season. While the Saints defense looked pretty impressive in Week 1, they will be hard pressed to cover Davis. At 6-3, 250 pounds, Davis creates a ton of mismatches for linebackers should be considered a solid No. 1 Fantasy TE heading into Week 2.

Davis productive in loss
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis led his team in receiving during his Week 1 matchup against the Seahawks. Davis was targeted 12 times by QB Alex Smith, which was more than any other offensive player, and finished with a team-high eight receptions for 73 yards. He averaged 9.1 yards per reception but did not record a touchdown in the 31-6 loss.
Analysis: Davis, who signed a a five-year contract extension on Saturday, was definitely Smith's favorite target on Sunday. The five-year player out of Maryland appears to be a huge part of San Francisco's offensive plans this season and was even able to produce a decent game for Fantasy owners in a blowout loss. At 6-3, 250 pounds he creates a ton of mismatches for linebackers and remains a elite Fantasy option at the thin tight end position. Consider him a No. 1 Fantasy TE heading into his Week 2 matchup against the Saints.

Davis gets contract extension
News: San Francisco gave tight end Vernon Davis a five-year contract extension on Saturday as the 49ers prepare to open the season on Sunday at Seattle. The signing comes with San Francisco coach Mike Singletary anticipating another big season from Davis, even if opponents had a whole offseason to scheme for him. He presents coverage issues and I think you just cant put a safety on him and say you got him, Singletary said. Davis is coming off a season in which he posted 78 catches for 965 yards and 13 touchdowns, which was an NFL best among tight ends.
Analysis: Davis has a solid history against the Seahawks. He had eight catches for 143 yards and one touchdown in two games against Seattle last season. Davis has 16 catches for 191 yards and two touchdowns in six career games against the Seahawks. Seattle did add rookie safety Earl Thomas to the secondary, but we aren't sure how much of an impact he will make against Davis in Week 1. If you got'em, start Davis in all Fantasy formats.

Niners play it safe with Davis
News: Niners TE Vernon Davis (knee) missed Thursday's preseason game against the Chargers. He was able to participate at full speed in practice this week and is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season.
Analysis: The Niners decided to play it safe with their star tight end and Fantasy owners should not read anything into him missing this preseason game action. He'll be healthy and ready to produce out of the gate. He finally reached his lofty potential in his fourth season, registering 78 receptions for 965 yards and 13 touchdowns. The maturation of QB Alex Smith certainly helped, and Davis was clearly his favorite target last year. With second-year WR Michael Crabtree emerging as well to prevent defenses from loading up to stop Davis, he should have a fine campaign in 2010. Davis is an elite Fantasy TE.

News: As expected San Francisco TE Vernon Davis did not play in Sunday's preseason game against Minnesota. Davis (strained knee) was limited in practice on Friday, but is expected to resume action sometime this week.
Analysis: In his fourth year in the NFL, Davis broke out with 78 receptions for 965 yards and 13 touchdowns. With a solid running game and other weapons around him, Davis could be in line for another stellar season. He was Alex Smith's favorite target last year and having the same offensive coordinator for a second straight season should benefit all parities in 2010. Davis could miss game Sunday
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis (strained knee) spent practice Thursday working with trainers on a side field and not with the team. Coach Mike Singletary continues to say his injury isn't serious, but he doesn't plan to rush Davis back into action. "Were going to take it one day at a time," Singletary said. "This is preseason." Singletary wasn't sure if Davis would play in the second preseason game against the Vikings on Sunday. I dont know, its just a day to day situation, Singletary said.
Analysis: Continue to monitor Davis' status and hope he is OK by Week 1. Davis is looking to build off his impressive 2009 season when he tied the NFL record for touchdown receptions for a tight end with 13. He also added 78 catches for 965 yards in a breakout season. The motivation of a new contract could help him this year, and we view Davis as a No. 1 Fantasy option and a Top 5 player at his position. Plan on drafting Davis somewhere around Round 4 or 5 in all leagues.

Head coach Mike Singletary added Davis' knee looked "strong" and the injury doesn't appear to be long-term. "Whatever he needs," Singletary said of Davis' timetable. "He looks good."
Analysis: It's great news to hear Davis isn't facing a major knee injury, such as an ACL tear. This is especially good news since Davis is coming off a breakout season, in which he recorded 78 catches for 965 yards and 13 touchdowns. Feel safe drafting Davis among the top five Fantasy TEs.

TE Davis suffers knee strain
News: 49ers coach Mike Singletary said TE Vernon Davis suffered a knee strain during Sunday's preseason game against the Colts. Davis was targeted twice by QB Alex Smith but didn't record a catch.
Analysis: We are probably going to know more about Davis' status in the next week, but a knee strain isn't as bad as some other knee issues, like a torn ACL. Continue to draft Davis among the top five Fantasy TEs off the board unless his injury turns out to be significant. Davis not worried about new deal
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis, who desires a new contract, said he did notice the extension signed by Chargers TE Antonio Gates. "I had a chance to look at the numbers, but it's not my concern right now," Davis said. "My focus is on football." Davis is ready for another training camp with coach Mike Singletary. "You learn what to expect, that no matter where you're on the field, if you're walking, he'll see it and yell at you, so you always have to jog." Singletary has been impressed with Davis. "Vernon is a guy that understands that you have to come out here and just do the best you can," Singletary said. "Vernon loves the game, he's focused, he's making the plays he is supposed to make and at some point in time, he'll take that next level. But he's just really having fun. He really is."

Davis not worried about contract
News: The Sacramento Bee reports 49ers TE Vernon Davis said Thursday he is not in a rush to sign a contract extension. He is entering the final year of his rookie contract. "I'll take my time," Davis said. "I mean, I would love to get it done before the season starts, but like I said, that's not my deal and that's not something that I need to be worrying about right now. All I'm worrying about is getting to where I want to go, staying at the top of my game and breaking more records. That's where my priorities are at the moment." Davis also said he's confident in QB Alex Smith, who is back as the full-time starter coming into 2010. "I wouldn't replace him for anybody," Davis said. "He has it in him. He just has to bring it out."
Analysis: Davis is looking to build off his impressive 2009 season when he tied the NFL record for touchdown receptions for a tight end with 13. Davis confident heading into 2010
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis said in an interview with CBSSports.com that 2009 "was a nice year for me." Davis tied the NFL record for touchdown receptions for a tight end with 13. He also added 78 catches for 965 yards in a breakout season. The reason? "Just having somebody to throw me the ball," Davis said. "In the past we've been going through quarterbacks and different quarterbacks, but this year I was actually able to have a quarterback in my favor who could throw me the ball." Davis was talking about Alex Smith, who took over for the ineffective Shaun Hill during the season and became a solid passer for the 49ers. "Alex made that much of a difference," Davis said. "I look forward to getting the start with Alex, getting the chemistry going and keeping it moving." Davis said he's confident 2010 will be just as good as this past season. "I knew I always had the talent, I just didn't have the right things around me," Davis said. "I can't do everything by myself. It takes everybody."
Analysis: Davis will enter 2010 as a Top 5 Fantasy TE with the chance to be the No. 1 player at his position. As he said, he finally has a QB who can make plays in Smith, who has matured since he previously was the franchise passer for the 49ers. It's hard to expect Davis to score 13 touchdowns again, but he should post solid stats and play well in 2010. Plan on drafting Davis somewhere around Round 4 or 5 in all leagues.

Davis ties record with 13th TD
News: Vernon Davis tied the NFL record for touchdown receptions for a tight end with his 13th of the season, helping the 49ers finish strong. Davis tied the mark set by Antonio Gates last season with the longest catch of his career, getting behind the defense on a 73-yard reception from Alex Smith that put the 49ers ahead 14-6 midway through the fourth quarter.
Analysis: Davis put a big red bow on one of the biggest years ever for a tight end in Fantasy Football, exceeding all expectations with 78 catches for 965 yards and 13 touchdowns. He had only three over his first five games, then had 10 in his last 10 matchups thanks to Alex Smith taking over under center for the Niners. Scoring in eight of his final 11 games, Davis has etched himself as one of the top tight ends in Fantasy Football heading into 2010, slightly behind Dallas Clark simply because Davis has not been this good over the course of his career and Clark is safer. Either way, consider Davis a solid starter worth a pick between Rounds 4 and 5 in drafts this summer.

Davis does little but gets TD
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis was quiet for the most part on Sunday in a Week 16 win over Detroit, but he did manage to find the end zone. Davis caught only three balls in the game, gaining a total of 18 yards. Davis picked up 2 of those yards on his TD reception in the third quarter.
Analysis: Davis has only three catches in each of his past three games, but managed to score in two of those starts. He has one touchdown in five of his last six games and has scored 12 touchdowns overall. Although his production has dipped down a bit down the stretch this season, he remains an elite Fantasy TE. Keep him active across the board for Week 17 against the Rams. In Week 4 against St. Louis, Davis had three catches for 43 yards and a score.

News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis didn't get into the end zone or have a big game Week 15 during a loss to the Eagles. Davis caught three passes for 43 yards in the game.
Analysis: Davis has now been limited yardage-wise in his last two games but although he didnt score in Week 15, he still has four touchdowns in his last five games. Davis is clearly a top target in the 49ers passing game and should be a No. 1 Fantasy option for Week 16 against the terrible Lions.

Davis finds end zone on MNF
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis continued his solid production for the 49ers on Monday night during the Week 14 win over the Cardinals. Davis finished with three catches for 34 yards in the game and scored on a 5-yard TD pass from Alex Smith in the 1st quarter. Most of his production came in the first half as the 49ers ran the ball more in the second to control the clock with the lead.
Analysis: With a touchdown in his fourth straight game, Davis is now leading the NFL in touchdown catches and has 11 for the season. If that isnt enough to start him as a No. 1 Fantasy TE in Week 15 at Philadelphia, we dont know what is. Hes a must-start at this point for the 49ers.

News: Niners TE Vernon Davis scored a touchdown for the third straight game and the 10th time this season, setting a single-season record for a 49ers tight end Week 13 at Seattle. He finished with six catches for a season-high 111 yards.
Analysis: Davis has three 100-yard games this season, all in the last three weeks, solidifying his place as one of the elite tight ends in Fantasy. He has only become more productive since the 49ers began running the spread offense. Keep him active Week 14 against the Cardinals.

Analysis: Davis continues to perform like one of the top tight ends in the league and Week 12 was no exception. He has a TD reception in six of his 12 games this season and eight overall, making him a must-start Fantasy option. The Niners are at Seattle Week 13. V. Davis catches only three passes
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis was a major disappointment on Thursday in a Week 10 win over the Bears. He caught only three passes in the game as the 49ers aerial attack suffered overall with QB Alex Smith throwing for just 118 yards. He gained 16 yards on the three catches.
Analysis: Davis had 10 catches for 102 yards in Week 9 against the Titans and was one of the top performing TEs in the league heading into Week 10. One bad game is nothing to get concerned about, although Smiths lack of receiving yards overall is a bit disturbing. Look for Davis to bounce back in Week 11 although the Niners do face a good Packers pass defense on the road. He remains a must-start for that game.

Davis breaks 100 yards receiving
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis was able to surpass the century mark in receiving for the first time this season on Sunday in a Week 9 loss to the Titans. He made 10 receptions in the game, racking up 102 yards. His longest reception of the day went for 40 yards. However, he failed to make it three straight games with a TD reception.
Analysis: Alex Smith and Davis have been on the same page since Smith took over the starting duties again Week 7 at Houston. Davis has four TD grabs during that span with 20 receptions and 215 total yards. Think of him as a must-start Fantasy TE in Week 10 against a Bears pass defense that was torched Week 9 by Arizona.

Davis scores another touchdown
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis continues to have a breakout season. Davis had three catches for 20 yards and a touchdown Sunday at the Colts. He now has seven touchdowns on the season and four in his past two games.
Analysis: Davis continues to emerge as a No. 1 Fantasy option. Continue to start him in all leagues, especially with an outstanding matchup in Week 9 against the Titans.

Three TDs for Niners TE Davis
News: Vernon Davis is finally reaching his potential. Thanks to QB Alex Smith getting inserted into the game after halftime, the 49ers tight end caught three touchdown passes as part of a seven-catch, 93-yard game at Houston in Week 7. Davis has already set a career-high in touchdowns with six and has 355 yards on 29 grabs so far this year. He has also scored in three of his last four games.
Analysis: Davis has become a must-start Fantasy TE in all leagues, even those that don't require a starting tight end. Keep him active in spite of a challenging matchup at Indianapolis in Week 8.

Davis held out of end zone Week 5
News: Niners TE Vernon Davis, who had three touchdown catches over his last two games, didn't get in the end zone Week 5 against the Falcons. He still had a decent performance, though, hauling in five passes for 51 yards.
Analysis: Davis has only twice gone for more than 50 yards this season, but his presence in the red zone still makes him a viable No. 1 TE in Fantasy. He can only get better from here. The 49ers have a bye in Week 6 before visiting the Texans in Week 7.

V. Davis seeking to extend TD streak
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis will seek to extend his touchdown streak to three games in Week 5 when San Francisco hosts Atlanta. The Falcons, coming off a bye, rank a poor 27th against the pass this season.
Analysis: Atlanta held TEs Jeff King and Benjamin Watson in check, but neither of those two are viable No. 1 options like Davis is. The big man has three touchdowns in his last two games and is certainly worth a shot as a low-end starting option in Week 5.

Davis turning into TD machine
News: Tight end Vernon Davis caught a 13-yard pass for his third touchdown in two weeks, Patrick Willis returned an interception 23 yards for a score and the 49ers overcame the absence of star running back Frank Gore with a 35-0 rout of the winless St. Louis Rams on Sunday. Davis led the charge with a team-high 43 yards on three catches. He was targeted four times and his longest reception went 21 yards.
Analysis: It might haven taken a few years, but Davis is finally rounding into the pass-catching tight end the 49ers were looking for when they drafted him in the first round in 2006. Head coach Mike Singletary has taken a personal approach to turning Davis into a prime-time NFLer and it seems his efforts are paying off. Consider Davis a nice low-end No. 1 Fantasy TE heading into Week 5 against the Falcons.

Davis in lineup vs. Rams
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis (shin) is active and expected to start for Week 4 vs. St. Louis. Davis was at full practice all week and listed as probable on the injury report.
Analysis: Davis is coming off a two-touchdown performance against Minnesota and has become a favorite target of Shaun Hill. He now gets to face a suspect Rams pass defense that has allowed five touchdowns in three games. Consider Davis a nice No. 1 Fantasy TE for Week 4.

TE Davis to continue making impact?
News: Vernon Davis vowed to make a big impact for the 49ers in new offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye's system. Now, he's getting his chances. Davis delivered with a career day in Sunday's last-second loss at Minnesota, and San Francisco could be calling his number even more this week against St. Louis with star running back Frank Gore sidelined by an ankle injury. Davis, who has come a long way to earn a captain spot for coach Mike Singletary, matched his career best with seven catches against the Vikings and set career highs with 96 yards and two touchdown receptions. Davis has already matched his TD total from last season and faces a Rams defense that has allowed five passing touchdowns through three games.
Analysis: Davis is a decent Fantasy option this week as the Rams' defense is awful and it's clear that Hill likes throwing his way. Consider him a top-end No. 2 Fantasy choice since there is still room for disappointment as he's unlikely to post another two-TD game and he is dealing with the shin injury. However, he has practiced all week and is listed as probable for the game.

V. Davis finally reaches his potential
News: We've been waiting a long time for a game like this from TE Vernon Davis, and we finally got it. Davis caught a team-best seven catches for 96 yards and two touchdowns at Minnesota in Week 3. He was targeted regularly by QB Shaun Hill.
Analysis: Davis will garner a lot of eyeballs this week, and he deserves it. He'll be worth considering in Week 4 as a startable Fantasy TE as teams begin to use alternative tight ends as the bye weeks kick in. Davis has a great matchup vs. the Rams as well, so consider him before finalizing your lineups.

V. Davis just modest contributor
News: Niners TE Vernon Davis, who caught five passes for 40 yards in Week 1, did even less Week 2 against the Seahawks. He caught two passes for 32 yards.
Analysis: On the one hand, you could say Davis is off to a good start since he caught five passes or more only twice last season. On the other hand, he has to do better than he has so far to matter in Fantasy. He's not worth starting Week 3 at Minnesota.

V. Davis to contribute again this week?
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis, who caught five passes for 40 yards in Week 1 at Arizona, will look to contribute again in Week 2 vs. Seattle.
Analysis: Davis only had five catches or more twice last season, so his Week 1 outing was very encouraging by his standards. Davis has the physical attributes to be a stud TE, but has yet to fulfill his potential. Only start him in super-deep leagues for Week 2, but the fact he's owned in 44 percent of leagues tells you that plenty of folks believe he could be in for a breakout campaign in 2009.

V. Davis leads team with five grabs
News: Niners TE Vernon Davis led the team with five receptions at Arizona in Week 1. He had only 40 yards, however.
Analysis: Davis started all 16 games last year and finished with only 358 receiving yards. The 49ers have said they plan to make better use of his talents this year, and he had a decent performance Sunday. He's still just a low-end choice for Week 2 against the Seahawks.

Fiery Davis named 49ers captain
News: Tight end Vernon Davis has been selected as one of the San Francisco 49ers captains, coming a long way since being kicked off the field by Mike Singletary with more than 10 minutes remaining against Seattle last October for behavior the coach didn't like. In fact, the excitable Davis has come a long way just since training camp. A regular fighter during his first three NFL seasons, he scuffled with linebacker Marques Harris during a practice early last month and everybody paid. As in all the Niners running enough "gassers," 12 sprints across the width of the field, to make one pass out as Davis so put it. Davis insisted it wasn't a fight, rather just an act of being competitive.
Analysis: Singletary said Davis "exemplified a lot of those qualities that you have to have in order to be a leader." Davis hopes to have a big role in new offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye's offense this season. Davis had four receptions for 57 yards in the preseason, but he hasn't quite been the impact receiver San Francisco hoped for when they selected him in the first round of the 2006 draft. Davis is more of a No. 2 Fantasy TE to open the season. The 49ers play the Cardinals in Week 1. Davis had four catches for 69 yards and one touchdown in two games against the Cardinals last season.

Davis hauls in two passes
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis should more glimpses of breaking out this season after catching two passes - both from Shaun Hill - for 41 yards against the Broncos in preseason action. The Niners have said they are going to count on Davis more this season.
Analysis: This was a nice start from Davis, who has long been a sleeper in Fantasy play but never has met his lofty expectations. Maybe this is the year. If you're looking for a No. 2 tight end late in deeper drafts and other reliable options aren't there, Davis is worth the flier.

Raye fond of Davis
News: 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye said Wednesday that he likes what the TE position can do for San Francisco this season, but he's counting on Vernon Davis to remain the starter and make the most plays. "In Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker and Joe Jon Finley, those players at that position, if the vision you asked me about earlier goes in full cycle, that is a very valuable position in our offense," Raye said. "The opportunity for success there is very high and the use of that position is maximized. The fact the he (Davis) brings so many exceptional skills in teams of blocking and running and catching and speed, it just enhances our ability to use him and use that position."
Analysis: Davis has to be glad Mike Martz is gone and Raye is on board. Raye helped develop future Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez during their time in Kansas City. Davis still has a lot to prove, but consider Davis a No. 2 Fantasy TE worth a late-round pick.

Singletary 'loves' Davis
News: The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reports 49ers coach Mike Singletary doesn't hate TE Vernon Davis. Instead, it's the opposite. "I love Vernon Davis," Singletary said. "I'm so thankful he's on our team. The guy has so much passion, and nobody works harder than he does."
Analysis: It's the same story every year for Davis: The hype begins in the offseason and extends into training camp, then he we hear glowing remarks about him and gets drafted way too early in Fantasy drafts. Sure, he's a candidate for big plays, but he's been that ever since he entered the NFL. Let someone else burn a decent draft pick on Davis this summer -- don't view him as anything more than a sleeper to serve as a No. 2 Fantasy TE. We've seen him go undrafted in many leagues already, so don't be surprised to see him go that way in yours as well.

Martz wasn't fond of Davis
News: The San Francisco Chronicle reports former 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz recently criticized TE Vernon Davis on the NFL Network. Martz said Davis was the best in-line blocking TE in the NFL and he's probably the second best pass protector on the 49ers next to Joe Staley. But Martz also indicated, according to the report, that Davis is nothing special as a receiver, probably because he often doesn't know where to go running routes.
Analysis: Davis has to be glad Martz is gone and new offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye is on board. Raye helped develop future Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez during their time in Kansas City. The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat recently predicted that Davis could be in line for a breakout year, and with Martz gone that is now a possibility unless he's still blocking more. Consider Davis a No. 2 Fantasy TE worth a late-round pick.

Davis could have breakout year
News: The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reports that 49ers TE Vernon Davis "will have a notable season." The report stats that Davis will catch far more passes than a year ago. "He will flash his extraordinary talent, but he will also have his occasional flub that will leave everybody scratching their heads," according to the paper.
Analysis: Davis had 31 catches last year, so he should do better and is worth drafting in deeper leagues as a No. 2 Fantasy TE. The talent is there, but Davis has to display it on the field and prove he's not a bust.

Niners want to use V. Davis more
News: The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reports that 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye has visions of using TE Vernon Davis as a receiver more than a blocker. It's the same vision every single offensive coordinator in San Francisco has had, but none really capitalized on it. "We would like to use him not as much in blocking in pass situations as we would running routes," Raye said. "So we would like to put him in positions where he is a matchup problem for the defense ... provided the protection that we have will allow us to do that."
Analysis: It's the same story every year for Davis: The hype begins in the offseason and extends into training camp, then he makes one or two nice plays in the preseason and gets drafted way too early in Fantasy drafts. Sure, he's a candidate for big plays, but he's been that ever since he entered the NFL. Let someone else burn a decent draft pick on Davis this summer -- don't view him as anything more than a sleeper to serve as a No. 2 Fantasy TE. Davis excited for new coordinator
News: The San Francisco Chronicle reports 49ers TE Vernon Davis is excited to be entering his fourth season with an offensive coordinator in Jimmy Raye who likes to highlight the tight end in his offense. "He told me the tight end is the focal point," Davis said. "I'm looking forward it. He said he wants to get his playmakers involved." Raye has worked with current Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez in his career, which excites Davis. "I talked to Tony all the time," Davis said. "He said Jimmy would take care of me and make sure I would get the ball and stuff like that. I'm just looking forward to the opportunity."
Analysis: Davis was frustrated last season in Mike Martz's offense. He went from 52 passes in 2007 to 31 last year. "It was real frustrating," Davis said. "I thought when you pick a guy with the sixth pick (in the 2006 draft) that you pick him to make plays. So my thing, was I was just trying to be patient." We've been waiting for Davis to become an elite Fantasy TE, and so far he's been a bust. Hopefully that will change this year, and he's worth drafting as a No. 2 option with a late-round pick.

Davis in better shape
News: The Sacramento Bee reports Wednesday that 49ers TE Vernon Davis looks slimmer and less muscle-bound during this week's OTA workouts.

Davis has poor end to poor 2008
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis caught three passes for 18 yards in Week 17's win over the Washington Redskins. Davis has had issues with coach Mike Singletary since he took over the reigns of the team.
Analysis: Davis has been a train wreck disaster this season for the Niners. He's had issues on the field and with the coaching staff and he's basically been a bit of a headcase. With all the talent in the world, Davis finished with just 31 catches for 358 yards and two touchdowns on the entire year. His talent suggests he could break out at some point but until he can get his act together he might not even get the chance. Who knows how this latest turn of events with Singletary will play out into 2009.

News: Niners TE Vernon Davis caught a 17-yard pass Week 16 at St. Louis and also lost a fumble. He had a total of eight receptions over his previous two games, but for only 60 yards.

V. Davis has decent outing in loss
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis had his second-best outing of the season in a Week 15 loss at Miami. He caught five passes for 31 yards and added an 11-yard run.
Analysis: Davis has yet to live up his expectations, and he may never do. He dropped a costly first-down chance against Miami, which summed up his disappointing season. There are tons of better TE options out there, so don't use Davis in Week 16 at St. Louis. He caught one touchdown pass for two yards in a meeting with the Rams earlier this season.

Davis gets praise from coach
News: There are two ways an NFL player can tell whether he's had a good game: His coach tells him how great he is, or his opponent tells him how much he stinks. Vernon Davis received both for his effort Sunday against the Jets. During his Monday news conference, coach Mike Singletary said Davis' blocking was the best he's ever seen by a tight end. "For him to be on a defensive end, linebacker -- I don't care who it was," Singletary said. "He was on them, he was driving them, he was moving them. And it wasn't like they didn't know he was coming. It was very impressive."
Analysis: Davis might have had more catches than usual against the Jets and blocked well, but is three really enough to get you excited? He remains just a low-end Fantasy TE in Week 15 at Miami.

News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis, FB Sean Ryan, WR Dominique Zeigler, RB Michael Robinson, RB DeShaun Foster, RB Delanie Walker, TE Billy Bajema, TE Brian Jennings, WR Chris Hannon and QB J.T. O'Sullivan all dressed for San Francisco's Week 13 win at Buffalo but didn't record an offensive stat.
Analysis: Davis has some Fantasy value, but he's been a massive flop this season. Robinson and Foster also have some minimal value. All of these guys, except maybe Davis, should be ignored in Week 14 at Arizona.

Davis has 47-yard catch
News: In the 49ers' 35-22 loss at the Cowboys in Week 12, TE Vernon Davis caught one pass for 47 yards. Davis ran a deep fade route and connected on a pass from Shaun Hill and nearly scored.
Analysis: Davis has caught exactly one pass in four of his last five games and isn't targeted enough to be a regular part of the San Francisco offense. Treat Davis like a top-end No. 2 Fantasy TE worth little consideration when he plays at Buffalo in Week 13 even though the Bills gave up 10 catches for 113 yards and a touchdown to Tony Gonzalez in Week 12.

Davis finally hauls in TD
News: After being denied a touchdown in his first eight games, 49ers TE Vernon Davis finally ended the streak during a Week 10 loss to the Cardinals. Davis, sent to the locker room by interim coach Mike Singletary's two weeks ago during a loss to Seattle, caught an 18-yard pass over the back of Adrian Wilson for a touchdown with 29 seconds left in the first half to give San Francisco a 21-13 lead. It was his only catch of the game and he had another 33-yard reception sail just over his head for what would have been his second touchdown of the game.
Analysis: As sad as it sounds, but Davis deserves a hot tag despite getting just one catch. He hasn't been very productive in 2008 and hasn't really been that All-Pro tight end the 49ers thought they were getting in 2006 when they took him in the first round. A lot of his failures in 2008 have to do with Mike Martz's offense not featuring the tight end. But Singletary is trying to get Davis more involved on offense. He still remains a low-end Fantasy TE heading into Week 11 against the Rams. Davis did have six catches for 73 yards in two games against St. Louis last season.

Davis, Singletary bury the hatchet
News: Niners TE Vernon Davis and coach Mike Singletary finally had a talk Monday afternoon, although Davis said he mostly listened. The two had a spat on the sidelines Week 8 against the Seahawks that ended with Singletary sending Davis to the locker room early. Davis said he didn't talk back on the field to Singletary, who suggested Davis wasn't a team player during his news conference. "I know that I'm a team guy," Davis said. "I asked him about the comment he made. He basically said he didn't mean that. ... I'd never do anything to hurt my teammates or put them in trouble. It's about the team, and when you're playing this game, we've really got to lean on each other."
Analysis: Singletary knows Davis possesses a measure of passion the Niners coach showed during his playing days with the Chicago Bears, but without the mental awareness that made Singletary among the best to ever play his position. "Vernon is not a guy who doesn't come to practice," Singletary said. "You have to tell Vernon, 'That's enough. Don't hurt the guy. That's your teammate.' He works his tail off. You don't have a problem with Vernon that way. What you have a problem with is with some of the decisions he makes at crucial times." Davis hasn't lived up to expectations in his short career and finished with only four grabs for 29 yards this game. Maybe Singletary's reaction will spark some life in him. The 49ers have a bye in Week 9, but consider Davis a No. 2 Fantasy TE for Week 10 at Arizona.

New coach sends TE Davis off field
News: Niners TE Vernon Davis got sent to the showers like a petulant teenager late in the third quarter Week 8 against the Seahawks. New head coach Mike Singletary made a dramatic statement in his first game when he ordered Davis off the field and into the locker room after the hotheaded tight end got a personal foul for slapping a Seattle player's helmet and then pretended not to know why Singletary was mad. "I will not tolerate players that think it's about them when it's about the team," Singletary said. "We cannot make decisions that cost the team, and then come off the sideline and it's nonchalant. No. ... I'd rather play with 10 people and just get penalized all the way until we have to do something else rather than play with 11 when I know that right now that person is not sold out to be a part of this team."
Analysis: Singletary yelled at the former No. 6 overall pick in full view of his teammates, commanding Davis to sit on the bench and then ordering him to the locker room at the next timeout. "I told him that he would do a better job for us right now taking a shower and coming back and watching the game than going out on the field, simple as that," Singletary said. "I don't think I did anything wrong," Davis said. "If the coach thinks I did something wrong, I have to listen to him. He's the boss. ... I didn't know what was going on." Davis hasn't lived up to expectations in his short career and finished with only four grabs for 29 yards this game. Maybe Singletary's reaction will spark some life in him. The 49ers have a bye in Week 9, but consider Davis a No. 2 Fantasy TE for Week 10 at Arizona.

Davis makes just one grab
News: Niners TE Vernon Davis made just one catch for five yards in Week 7 at the N.Y. Giants. He was thrown to just twice in the game.
Analysis: Davis made his only catch of the game on a bubble screen and that was really the only designed play to him all game. He is not getting enough looks in the Mike Martz run offense to consider a regular Fantasy tight end. Until that changes, view him as no more than a No. 2 Fantasy tight end. Davis has first nice day Week 6
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis caught more passes in Sunday's loss to the Eagles than he had all season prior to Week 6. Davis caught six passes for 75 yards to lead the 49ers. He had a long of 57 yards.
Analysis: Davis had just five catches for 87 yards coming into Week 6's contest. Does this mean a turnaround for Davis? We believe that the Eagles have a propensity for giving up big yardage to tight ends. That being the reason for Davis' big day, we consider Davis just a No. 2 Fantasy TE for Week 7 against the Giants.

Davis benched by coach after gesture
News: The Sports Xchange notes, San Francisco TE Vernon Davis was benched late in the 49ers' loss to the Saints after catching a 19-yard pass. It was Davis' first and only catch of the game and Davis made a demonstrative gesture toward the 49ers' sideline. Coach Mike Nolan said he asked Davis to take a seat for the final six minutes of the game.
Analysis: Don't worry, Davis will start Week 5. He's an inspired blocker when he wants to be, but he has done nothing but disappoint his Fantasy owners throughout his career. Tight ends don't have a history of success under Mike Martz, so you shouldn't expect a change anytime soon. He's not worth starting Week 5 against the Patriots.

Davis doesn't like role on offense?
News: Niners TE Vernon Davis claims he left his frustrations in New Orleans. One day after Davis reacted to his only reception late in the 49ers' loss Week 4 at the Saints with what appeared to be a screaming diatribe at the San Francisco coaches, Davis insisted nothing was wrong that couldn't be fixed with another win or two -- oh, and maybe a few more passes for a player who's growing tired of blocking all the time. "I was just fired up," said Davis, who didn't play again after his emotional display with 6 minutes left in the fourth quarter. "I didn't really say anything to the coaches. ... I'd love to get down the field a little bit more and catch passes. I love to catch passes more than blocking any day."
Analysis: Davis is an inspired blocker when he wants to be, but he has done nothing but disappoint his Fantasy owners throughout his career. Tight ends don't have a history of success under Mike Martz, so you shouldn't expect a change anytime soon. He's not worth starting Week 5 against the Patriots.

49ers committed to TE Davis
News: Vernon Davis claims he never heard that smattering of boos at Candlestick Park last weekend when he couldn't catch two long passes from J.T. O'Sullivan. The San Francisco 49ers' imposing tight end still figures it's only a matter of weeks until those boos turn into raucous cheers, now that Davis is with an offensive coordinator and a quarterback who are determined to help him reach his lofty potential. "I'm just out here working hard and getting ready for that chance I've got coming," Davis said Thursday after another post-practice workout with O'Sullivan. "Just run, and the ball will be there. That's what my coach tells me."
Analysis: As the San Francisco fans' boos attest, Davis is edging toward that fine NFL line between Promising Prospect and Possible Bust early in his third NFL season. The sixth overall pick in the 2006 draft was the 49ers' second-leading receiver last year, but he still hasn't become a game-breaking pass-catcher in the mold of Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates, as many expected when he left Maryland. Though he's a capable receiver and an occasionally inspired blocker, he still makes mental mistakes and sometimes struggles with the tougher receptions. Davis has just four catches for 68 yards in the 49ers' first three games, but offensive coordinator Mike Martz remains firmly committed to getting the tight end involved in his vaunted offense. It could come Week 4 against the Saints, who have a weak defense, but Davis remains a bit of a risky start.

Davis makes just one catch
News: Niners TE Delanie Walker led the team in receiving in Week 3 against Detroit. He caught three passes for 44 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Starting TE Vernon Davis caught one pass for 17 yards.
Analysis: Davis was held without a catch last week and has just four catches all season. It seems he's headed for another frustrating season and Fantasy owners should at least begin to prepare for another subpar year. Davis is no more than a No. 2 tight end for Week 4 at New Orleans.

Davis held without a catch
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis did not catch a pass in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks even though QB J.T. O'Sullivan threw for over 300 yards.
Analysis: We're not sure why Davis was held without a catch but he started the game and played throughout. The Niners meet the terrible Detroit Lions in Week 3 and their awful defense so consider Davis, normally a No. 1 option, his normal self next week. He should be starting in Week 3 and hopefully he'll get back on the positive side of things.

Davis is nice option Week 2
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis caught three passes for 51 yards against the Cardinals in Week 1 and looked like a favorite target of new quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan. He faces the Seahawks in Week 2 in Seattle and doesn't have much history against them. Last season in Seattle he caught just one pass for four yards and didn't play in the other game in the Bay Area. In 2006 in Seattle he caught three passes for 15 yards but did get into the end zone.
Analysis: Davis has scored before in Seattle and it looks like he could score again. He'll once again be a top target in the offense and looks like he'll be one of the better TEs throughout this season for the Niners. Seattle's defense is far tougher than that of Arizona, but that could play into Davis' favor as the under-the-defense guy. Many Fantasy owners have Davis as their No. 1 TE option and if that is the case, by all means start him in Week 2 as the Niners travel to Seattle.

Davis is O'Sullivan's go-to guy
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis had a pretty good game against the Cardinals in Week 1 Sunday. Davis looked to be the favorite target of new QB J.T. O'Sullivan as he caught three passes for 51 yards.
Analysis: The good news here is that Davis looks to be O'Sullivan's favorite target. He's also the guy O'Sullivan finds when he gets into trouble. That could mean good things for Davis even though we expect the Niners offense to struggle this season. Many Fantasy owners have Davis as their No. 1 TE option and if that is the case, by all means start him in Week 2 as the Niners travel to Seattle.

Davis does well vs. Arizona
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis will meet Arizona in California on Sunday in Week 1. The Cardinals have been one of the teams that Davis has done well against in his short two-year career. Last year in San Fran, however, he only caught two balls for four yards. In Arizona last year, though, he scored one of his four total TDs on the year. In his rookie year, Davis averaged 64 yards in two games vs. the Cardinals and also scored once.
Analysis: Davis could see a break out season in 2008 so anything he did in previous years could be thrown out the window. That said, he's done fairly well against the Cardinals, albeit better on the road. If Davis is your No. 1 TE option than by all means start him in Week 1.

TE Davis catches bomb from O'Sullivan
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis only had one catch in the team's third preseason game at Chicago, but it was a deep lob down the right sideline from J.T. O'Sullivan, good for 40 yards. Davis has four catches for 72 yards through three preseason games.
Analysis: Offensive coordinator Mike Martz is elated to have Davis in his arsenal this season and plans on using him in the offense quite a bit this season. Of course, the Niners have wanted to involve Davis in their offense since they drafted him. We can all agree that Davis is more of a pass-catching tight end than a blocking tight end, right? Then it's with that thinking that we believe Davis will be a breakout third season. After all, that's when many wide receivers begin to blossom, and Davis is more wide receiver than tight end. Throw in Martz finding a way to use Davis like he's never used a tight end before, and you've got plenty of incentive for drafting him in 2008 Fantasy play as a middle-end No. 1 TE option. Be ready to grab him with a choice between Rounds 6 and 8.

Nolan: Davis won't play WR
News: 49ers head coach Mike Nolan told the media Wednesday that he expects Vernon Davis to be used as a tight end and not a receiver this season, news that could trim a few snaps off his season. "We flex that tight end; he'll do that flexed tight end job. But Vernon does a good job both run and pass, and blocking and receiving," Nolan said. "I think the significant thing for us with Vernon is, obviously, we want to see him with the ball in his hands. He had it 52 times last year and if he can add another 20 or 25 to that it helps us win. That would be good. He'll be useful."

Davis ready to challenge Martz
News: The San Jose Mercury News reports with 49ers TE Vernon Davis bothered by injuries and trapped in a terrible offense, his athleticism has yet to translate into production since the 49ers chose him with the sixth pick in the 2006 draft. But maybe new offensive coordinator Mike Martz can turn him loose. Davis looked excellent during minicamps, where he ran more inventive routes than ever. "I don't know if anyone in the league can run like he can at that position," Martz said. "He gets down the field so fast. I don't know who beats him in a foot race." But the paper also reports that no tight end has enjoyed a big season playing under Martz during his dozen seasons as an offensive coordinator or head coach. Ernie Conwell was the most productive of the bunch, with 38 catches in 2001.
Analysis: Look for Martz to help improve Davis' value. While Martz has struggled with tight ends in the past, he's never had a player of Davis' caliber before. Consider Davis a No. 1 TE worth a pick around Round 8 or 9 in all leagues and hope this is the year he finally enjoys a breakout performance.

Martz pleased with Davis
News: New 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz is already fond of TE Vernon Davis. "I don't know if anyone in the league can run like he can at that position," Martz said in the Sacramento Bee. "He gets down the field so fast. I don't know who beats him in a footrace." Martz said none of his offensive players worked harder this spring than Davis, who was on the field before practice started and hung around after it ended to hone his receiving skills. Davis caught a respectable 52 passes for 509 yards last season, but he disappeared from the passing game for long stretches because he was being used as a blocker. "I would say I didn't have many opportunities to really showcase my talent," Davis said. That shouldn't be an issue in Martz's offense. Davis said his biggest task this offseason has been polishing his pass routes. And he has used film of Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt and other former Martz receivers as a model, signaling that the 49ers' tight end will run routes atypical for his position.
Analysis: Davis is entering his third year in the NFL, which is typically the year receivers have a breakout season. Let's hope it holds true for tight ends as well. Davis should be considered a low-end No. 1 TE in Fantasy leagues in 2008, but he has the talent to be an elite player at the position. Draft him somewhere in the middle rounds.

TE Davis working with Mike Martz
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis is eager to see what new offensive coordinator Mike Martz has cooked up for him after two mostly frustrating NFL campaigns. The former No. 6 overall pick was second on the team with 52 catches for 509 yards and four touchdowns last season, but frequently fumed about his inability to get more involved in the game plans of Jim Hostler, who was fired from the job Martz now holds. "He said he's never had a tight end of my stature," Davis said. "The best part of being around Mike Martz is just watching him explore things. We're starting to focus on things we haven't focused on in a while, like getting the ball to guys who can make plays. I don't know how he's going to use me. I'm just waiting, just patient."
Analysis: Davis started 14 games in 2007 and improved on his rookie numbers, catching 52 balls for 509 yards (9.8 avg.) with four touchdowns and a fumble lost. He missed two games with a knee injury. Davis had eight games with at least four catches. We can all agree that Davis is more of a pass-catching tight end than a blocking tight end, right? Then it's with that thinking that we believe Davis will be a breakout third season. After all, that's when many wide receivers begin to blossom, and Davis is more wide receiver than tight end. Throw in Mike Martz coming to San Francisco and probably finding a way to use Davis like he's never used a tight end before, and you've got plenty of incentive for drafting him in 2008 Fantasy play as a middle-end No. 1 TE option. Just 20 yards for V. Davis
News: TE Vernon Davis caught two passes for 20 yards at Cleveland in Week 17.
Analysis: Davis' season ends with him getting 509 yards and four touchdowns in 13 games. He looked like the gifted athlete we hoped to see develop in spurts, but still wasn't consistent enough for our Fantasy tastes. Perhaps he'll explode in his third season a la your general third-year receiver. Expect his upside and hype to keep him among the top 12 Fantasy tight ends in 2008.

TE Davis to thwart the Bucs?
News: The Sports Xchange reports that 49ers TE Vernon Davis is tied for the team lead with 47 receptions, but he has also shown some inexperience. He leads the team with nine penalties, seven of which have been for false starts. His QB, Shaun Hill, does not have a big arm, but he does own a quick release and a good feel for going through his progression. The 49ers receivers appear to be better suited at the ball-control type of patterns of the West Coast offense, as opposed to the vertical game they have adopted the past two seasons, and that should be evident in Week 16 when the Niners host the Bucs. Tampa Bay is good against the pass, however.
Analysis: Davis had a nice game with Hill at QB last week (five catches, 46 yards, touchdown), but it was against the Bengals. Think of Davis as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy TE for Week 16 since we're still not sold on Shaun Hill being a stud quarterback.

Davis leaps into crowd after TD
News: 49ers QB Shaun Hill connected with TE Vernon Davis nine seconds before halftime for a touchdown that helped propel San Francisco to a Week 15 win against the Bengals. Cincinnati went ahead 10-7 when Chris Henry got behind two defenders for his touchdown catch late in the first half, but Hill rallied the 49ers again on another long drive capped by an impressive 17-yard throw to Davis in coverage. Davis, the athletic tight end often underutilized by Alex Smith and Trent Dilfer, celebrated by jumping into the crowd as the 49ers earned their first halftime lead of the season. Davis finished the game with five catches for 46 yards.
Analysis: Davis has five of more catches in three of his last four games and also has two touchdowns in that span. The 49ers have been trying to turn him into the next Antonio Gates and Davis is finally emerging from his shell. Injuries in his first two seasons have really curtailed his progress. Consider Davis a low-end No. 1 Fantasy TE heading into Week 16 against the Bucs.

V. Davis in line for big week?
News: With a new QB throwing him the ball and the fact he's going up against a very suspect passing defense in the form of the Bengals, San Francisco TE Vernon Davis could be in for a nice Fantasy week in Week 15.
Analysis: A 49ers TE lead his team in receiving in Week 14, but it wasn't Davis. Instead, it was Delanie Walker. Interestingly enough, both TEs were targeted eight times on Sunday, with Walker getting one more catch and 24 more yards than Davis. The expectations will always be higher for Davis, a sixth-overall pick, and we don't think the 49ers have given up on him just yet. We consider him a low-end No. 1 or high-end No. 2 Fantasy TE in Week 15.

TE Davis catches five passes
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis caught five passes for 42 yards during a Week 14 loss to the Vikings. His longest reception went for 13 yards. Davis has four or more receptions in six of his last eight games. He has failed to catch a touchdown in two straight games.
Analysis: Davis is becoming a very active part of the 49ers' offense, but he still doesn't have the stats that Fantasy owners like to see. He heads into Week 15 against the Bengals as a low-end Fantasy TE, but it might be the week he busts out since Cincinnati has a suspect passing defense.

V. Davis a Fantasy roller coaster
News: Over his last six games, 49ers TE Vernon Davis has three games with six or more catches but also has two games with only one catch. What he will produce in Week 14 against the Vikings, no one knows, but Minnesota is clearly stronger against the run than they are against the pass.
Analysis: If Davis is to breakout with a monster game this season, this could be the week to do it. Frank Gore should be held in check, which means Trent Dilfer will be forced to throw the ball around quite a bit. If Davis can get enough targets he should produce numbers in the 6-70 range, but he could also do a lot better or a lot worse. Consider him a No. 2 Fantasy TE in Week 14.

Davis held to just one catch
News: Niners TE Vernon Davis caught one pass for 19 yards in Week 13 at Carolina.
Analysis: Davis continues to be just as likely to put up a clunker as a good line as the 49ers' offense continues to struggle. He remains worthy of starting in leagues of 12-plus teams that require starting a tight end, though. He'll face the Vikings in Week 14.

V. Davis coming on strong
News: While his yards-per-catch average is still under 10 yards per, 49ers TE Vernon Davis has become a regular part of the team's offense, catching at least four passes in all but one of his last six games with a pair of touchdowns, including one last week at Arizona. This week, Davis plays at Carolina in Week 13, a team that's allowed three receiving TDs in each of its last two games, and a team with a banged-up secondary that will have trouble covering the athletic Davis.
Analysis: Davis is a solid low-end No. 1 Fantasy TE pick for Week 13 Fantasy action. Start him if you own him and don't have another premier tight end to pick from.

Analysis: Davis missed two games earlier in the season with a knee injury, but has played in the last six and has four or more receptions in four of those games. The 49ers look to him as an Antonio Gates, he just doesn't have the same numbers yet. Consider Davis a low-end No. 1 Fantasy TE Week 13 against the Panthers.

Vernon Davis catches a four-yarder
News: Niners TE Vernon Davis caught only one pass for four yards Week 10 at Seattle.
Analysis: After posting two straight weeks with 70-plus receiving yards, Davis disappointed in Week 10. The sad reality is he'll disappoint more often than not unless the 49ers can figure something out on offense, which sounds like a flight of fancy at this point in the season. Davis confident he'll contribute
News: Over the last two weeks, 49ers TE Vernon Davis has set career-high numbers for receptions with six in Week 8 and seven in Week 9. He's clearly added a new dimension to the 49ers offense and hopes to continue to help at Seattle in Week 10. QB Alex Smith told the San Jose Mercury News that he sees Smith evolving into a quality component of the 49ers offense. "You see it in games and on the practice field," Smith said. "We're talking through things: what I'm thinking, what he's thinking, what we're seeing. He's gaining an understanding of what we're trying to do, what his role is on certain plays, how to attack defenses."
Analysis: Davis should be good for around 75 receiving yards this week as the Niners are again expected to be playing from behind at Seattle. Start Davis as a No. 1 Fantasy TE for Week 10 action.

TE Davis Niners' best threat?
News: With Frank Gore struggling and Alex Smith in need of receiving help, might Vernon Davis become the Niners' best receiving threat? If that's the plan, then Davis should post decent numbers against the Falcons' 20th-ranked pass defense in Week 9. The Niners' passing offense ranks last in the league, but Davis has only started in five games and is tied for second in receptions with 18 (with an ugly 9.8 yards per catch average).
Analysis: Fellow tight ends Owen Daniels, Jeremy Shockey and Eric Johnson each had five receptions against the Falcons this season, so that bodes well for Davis. If you own him, think of him as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy TE worth a look if you don't have a better option available.

Vernon Davis finally shows up
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis had probably his best career game in the NFL when he caught six passes for 71 yards and a touchdown in San Francisco's 31-10 loss to the Saints in Week 8.
Analysis: We all know Davis has the ability to be a superstar in this league, it's just a question of when it will happen. It's unlikely he'll put up Antonio Gates-like stats while with the 49ers, but he will have the occasional big week like he did on Sunday. TE Davis optimistic about playing
News: Alex Smith and Vernon Davis got valuable recovery time during the San Francisco 49ers' bye week. They just don't know if they got enough to play Sunday. The quarterback and his talented target returned to certain parts of practice Wednesday after missing most of San Francisco's last two games with injuries. Coach Mike Nolan wouldn't speculate on their chances to play against the New York Giants, but both are cautiously optimistic -- perhaps Davis more than Smith. "I'll play," said Davis, out since Sept. 23 with a knee injury. "It feels good to be back in there. The more you practice, the better and the more comfortable we're going to get."
Analysis: Davis said he participated in every aspect of Wednesday's workout in his comeback from a knee injury that kept him out of the last two games with a sprained ligament. The former No. 6 overall pick has just eight catches for 83 yards in what he expects to be his breakout NFL season. Though Davis struggled to get his quarterback's attention at times before his injury, he's still hoping he'll be the spark for San Francisco's struggling passing offense. News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis, who missed Week 4 and Week 5 with a knee injury, should return Week 7 at the N.Y. Giants, according to The Sacramento Bee.
Analysis: Davis, an athletic tight end, appeared headed for a breakout season this summer after missing six games of his rookie campaign with a broken right leg. News: The 49ers released their practice report Wednesday and listed TE Vernon Davis (knee) as not practicing, but not yet out for Week 5 vs. Baltimore. Earlier reports in the week had Davis already out for Sunday's game and not expected to return until Week 7 against the Giants.
Analysis: The 49ers might not yet list Davis out, but don't expect him to play barring any miracles come Sunday. The athletic tight end appeared headed for a breakout season this summer after missing six games of his rookie campaign with a broken right leg. Instead, he has just eight catches for 83 yards. Keep him reserved in all Fantasy leagues heading into Week 5.

News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis (knee), CB Tarell Brown (hamstring), WR Jason Hill (knee), S Doshon Goldson, DT Atiyyah Ellison, DE Ray McDonald and third QB Shaun Hill were all named inactive for San Francisco's Week 4 game with the Seahawks.
Analysis: Davis was ruled out earlier this week, so hopefully you have already benched him. The rest of these players have no Fantasy value at this point.

TE Davis officially ruled out
News: The 49ers officially ruled out TE Vernon Davis (knee) on Wednesday for Week 4 vs. Seattle. Davis probably will miss the 49ers' next two games with a sprained ligament in his right knee after getting hurt during San Francisco's 37-16 loss at Pittsburgh in Week 4. Last year's No. 6 overall draft pick caught four passes for 56 yards against the Steelers just a few days after asking coach Mike Nolan how he could be more involved in the Niners' struggling offense.
Analysis: The athletic tight end appeared headed for a breakout season this summer after missing six games of his rookie campaign with a broken right leg. Instead, he has just eight catches for 83 yards -- and now he's probably out through San Francisco's bye week in early October. Vernon Davis out two weeks?
News: Just when Vernon Davis finally became a key part of the San Francisco 49ers' offense, the tight end is headed back to the sideline. Davis probably will miss the 49ers' next two games with a sprained ligament in his right knee after getting hurt during San Francisco's 37-16 loss at Pittsburgh.
Instead, he has just eight catches for 83 yards - and now he's probably out through San Francisco's bye week in early October. That didn't stop Davis from studying at the 49ers' training complex late Sunday night after the team's cross-country flight from its first loss of the season. Davis watched the entire game on film before heading to bed. Keep him reserved in all Fantasy leagues heading into Week 4 against Seattle.

Vernon Davis leaves with knee injury
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis had four catches for 56 yards before leaving the team's Week 3 game at Pittsburgh with a knee injury.
Analysis: Monitor Davis' status for the coming week as he's got a divisional game vs. Seattle in Week 4 and could be decent in that game, especially since he's getting more involved in the offense.

Will Davis get what he asked for?
News: Can you trust Davis at this point? He has just four catches for 27 yards and no touchdowns in his first two games. He wants the ball more, but that might be tough against the Steelers, who are No. 3 in pass defense.
Analysis: Davis has pleaded with coach Mike Nolan to see the ball more often, and we'll see what his efforts bring him in Week 3 at Pittsburgh. It might take a couple of games for Davis to really get more involved, so he is still a risky start this week.

TE Davis the new Keyshawn?
News: Though Vernon Davis phrased his demand as a polite question, the San Francisco tight end's underlying message to coach Mike Nolan was clear: just give me the ball, and maybe we can fix the 49ers' struggling offense. After catching just four passes in the Niners' first two games, Davis dropped by Nolan's office Tuesday. He asked whether a talented receiver such as himself could be more involved in an offense that has looked mostly awful despite San Francisco's unbeaten record, failing to gain 200 yards in either win. "We've just got to get the correct game plan," Davis said Wednesday. "Sometimes the game plan you use might not be the best one."
Analysis: After describing the 49ers' attack as conservative, Davis almost laughed when asked whether such a plan would work Sunday against the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers: "No way." Davis' volatility was one of the 49ers' worries entering the season, yet the athletic tight end clearly has a point. San Francisco's game plans under new offensive coordinator Jim Hostler do seem conservative and tentative to everyone but Nolan, with Alex Smith playing it safe while the 49ers rely heavily on Frank Gore, who's been mostly bottled up. Davis is sounding like a young Keyshawn Johnson when he told the Jets to start throwing the ball more his way. Fantasy owners would love nothing more than see a rise in Davis' production. Davis should still be considered a low-end No. 1 TE against the Steelers in Week 2.

V. Davis has two catches
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis had two catches for 23 yards Sunday against the Rams.

News: TE Vernon Davis struggled Week 1 vs. Arizona, but the other bad news is that he has one career catch against the Rams, good for 11 yards.

News: Vernon Davis had just two receptions for four yards in Monday's Week 1 opener against the Cardinals.

Vernon Davis ready for big year
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis is ready for the season-opener against Arizona. "I feel good going in," Davis said Tuesday in the San Jose Mercury News. "I got a good amount of reps in the preseason and in training camp. I'm getting the ball a lot, and now what we've got to do is transfer this onto the field. It's just a matter of opportunity now." Davis was limited last season, when he missed six games because of a broken right leg. But he showed glimpses of the game-breaking speed and power that made him the No. 6 overall draft pick in 2006. Davis had 20 catches for 265 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games as a rookie. He's looking to expand on those numbers in a big way, and in the process become the first tight end in 49ers history to reach 1,000 yards receiving.
Analysis: You have to love Davis' confidence. He is a No. 1 Fantasy TE and should be started in all leagues in Week 1 against the Cardinals.

News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis caught two passes for 29 yards vs. Oakland in preseason play. One catch was for 15 yards, one was for 14 yards.

TE Davis a breakout candidate
News: Vernon Davis is showing a knack for getting under his teammates' skin. As long as the San Francisco 49ers' brash tight end develops an equal aptitude for getting into the end zone, those same teammates think he's headed for a breakout season. After an uproarious opening week of training camp that included a fight with veteran lineman Larry Allen, Davis insists he'll never put his own interests ahead of his team. "I'm going to do my thing - show off when I catch the ball, things like that," said Davis, the sixth overall pick in last year's draft. "But when it comes down to it, I need these guys, this team."
Analysis: Davis had 20 catches for 265 yards last season, missing six games with a broken leg. He scored on his first catch against Arizona, but didn't get rolling until late in the season - and he carried that momentum into offseason workouts, where he was the talk of the training complex. Davis is going to be a solid player in 2007 and should be considered a low-end No. 1 option. He should be drafted in the second tier of TE and is someone who will help your Fantasy team this season.

TE Davis ready for big year
News: Vernon Davis plans to make good on the promise that turned him into the sixth pick of the 2006 NFL draft. If he is to become another Antonio Gates or Tony Gonzalez, a tight end with a wideout's taste for the deep pass, this season is his best chance to prove it. Davis is healthy, and he appears to have lost the fogginess endemic to NFL rookies. Meanwhile, the 49ers have lost the steady hands and temperament of Eric Johnson to free agency. They don't have a wide receiver with the credentials to demand the ball whenever it goes airborne. And the quarterback, who three years ago was playing in a college offense that didn't use a tight end, has become rather fond of throwing in Davis' direction in these recent practices.
Analysis: Davis is going to be a solid player in 2007 and should be considered a low-end No. 1 option. He should be drafted in the second tier of TE and is someone who will help your Fantasy team this season.

Davis reels in three touchdowns
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis scored in his first NFL game, then broke his fibula two weeks later and missed six games. He finished 2006 with 20 catches for 165 yards and three scores, owning the second-highest yards-per-catch average on the team among those with at least 20 catches. Davis did have two games with no catches and two more with one catch, but was good for three-to-four grabs when he was healthy. He did not have any 100-yard games.
Analysis: Davis is still considered to be a potential Fantasy superstar thanks to his incredible combination of size and speed. Consider him at least a low-end No. 1 Fantasy tight end in 2007 league drafts, worth a selection in the middle rounds once the dependable TEs have been taken. If you like his potential, your best game plan is to draft Davis and another TE and platoon the two until Davis proves he's a legit No. 1 option.

Davis makes three catches
News: 49ers TE Vernon Davis caught three passes for 16 yards in Week 17 at Denver.
Analysis: Davis' progress in his rookie season was hampered by an injury early on in the season, but he has a high ceiling and could be reserved in keeper formats for the 2007 season. In drafts, he'll likely be a nice sleeper in leagues that require two tight ends.

TE Davis deals with drops
News: 49ers coach Mike Nolan was asked whether rookie TE Vernon Davis needs more work catching the ball away from his body, rather than letting the ball reach his chest. Davis has suffered a few drops, including one Sunday that would have allowed the 49ers to convert on third down. "Whether it's Vernon or anyone, I think that's something they always have to work on," Nolan said. "If you don't, you get sloppy and start dropping balls."
Analysis: Davis has been solid - even with the drops - since returning from a broken leg and should be considered a No. 1 TE for Week 17 against Denver. He also should be a No. 1 TE in 2007.

TE Davis lands bigger role
News: FOXSports.com reports that 49ers WR Antonio Bryant has been suspended four games for violating the league's Substance Abuse Policy stemming from his arrest on suspicion of drunk driving in November. That means that Arnaz Battle will become the primary receiving option for the Niners for the rest of the season, with WR Bryan Gilmore and TE Vernon Davis also helping out QB Alex Smith.
Analysis: Smith's Fantasy value takes a small hit as Bryant was a decent deep threat who would potentially pitch in on a weekly basis. Battle deserves consideration as a low-end No. 3 Fantasy WR with Bryant out of the picture, while Davis remains a No. 1 Fantasy TE. Using Smith or Gilmore is not advised in Week 16 Fantasy play.

Davis questions Smith
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis pinned the blame on QB Alex Smith for two throws the Packers intercepted in crucial situations in Week 14. "We just made mistakes with throws that should have been higher," Davis said in the Contra Costa Times. "I did what I'm supposed to do: Sell the run, take off and get into the wide corner. I was open. Did you see that? He should have thrown it quicker and a little over the top." Said Smith: "I was trying to make something happen. I thought Vernon was going to flatten toward the sideline." Davis, who missed six games with a broken leg, admitted he's still learning, still building a rapport with Smith. Davis finished with three catches for 74 yards and a touchdown. Smith was 12-of-29 passing for 201 yards, one TD and two INTs
Analysis: Look for Davis and Smith to fix whatever problems they have. They will be playing together for several years and should be fine. Consider Davis a No. 2 TE for Week 15 against Seattle, and Smith should be considered a No. 3 QB option.

Davis will replace injured TE
News: San Francisco 49ers tight end Eric Johnson will miss at least the next two weeks after injuring his left knee during practice. Johnson, who has 32 catches for 282 yards and two touchdowns this season, will be replaced by rookie Vernon Davis, the sixth overall pick who missed seven weeks with a broken leg. Davis, who has just six catches, returned to the starting lineup last week against St. Louis.
Analysis: Davis is still trying to get back into the swing of things after missing several weeks with a broken leg, so consider him a No. 2 Fantasy TE for Week 13 against the Saints. Davis is only owned in 37 percent of Fantasy leagues at this time. While he remains an excellent Fantasy keeper, owners in seasonal leagues might want to take a flier on Davis for the remainder of the season. With Johnson out of the way the next few weeks, Davis could see an expanded role in the 49ers offense.

TE Davis OUT 4 weeks with calf
News: 49ers rookie TE Vernon Davis broke the fibula in his right leg Sunday during a 38-24 loss to Philadelphia and is expected to miss about four weeks. Davis said he had felt pain and soreness in the leg early in the game but kept playing. He went down at midfield in the third quarter while chasing Philadelphia defensive tackle Mike Patterson, who returned a fumble 98 yards for a touchdown. Davis did not have a reception for a second consecutive game, missing a chance to haul in a slightly overthrown pass from Alex Smith late in the first quarter.
Analysis: TE Eric Johnson filled in for Davis and saw his most extensive action of the season. He finished with a team-high seven catches, including a 15-yard touchdown pass in the final seconds, with 89 yards. Johnson missed last season because of a foot injury but led the team with 82 receptions in 2004. He is worth picking up in all leagues. Keep Davis reserved until he comes back from injury.

TE Johnson scores TD
News: 49ers TE Eric Johnson had seven catches for 87 yards and a touchdown against the Eagles.
Analysis: Johnson is outperforming rookie TE Vernon Davis, who had no catches Sunday. Johnson might be worth adding at this time, while Davis should be reserved in all leagues.

TE Davis added to injury report
News: 49ers rookies TE Vernon Davis (shin) is listed as probable for Week 3 vs. Philadelphia.
Analysis: Davis is taking his fair share of lumps in the first few weeks, but he seems to get over the injury bug fairly quickly. The Eagles defense is all banged up, so if Davis plays, you might want to consider starting him Sunday. Don't forget though he is a rookie, so keep your expectations in line.

Vernon Davis gets shut out
News: Vernon Davis did not have a catch in Week 2 vs. St. Louis.
Analysis: The rookie TE did not see much action in Week 2. That alone makes him a somewhat questionable start in Week 3 vs. Philadelphia despite a nice matchup. He has plenty of upside and should be able to bounce back against a weak Eagles pass defense.

V. Davis able to play Sunday
News: San Francisco TE Vernon Davis (hip) was in the starting lineup in Week 2 vs. St. Louis.
Analysis: Davis showed in Week 1 he was going to have a bright future in the NFL as his first career catch went for a TD. It's still too early to consider Davis a No. 1 option at TE, but maybe by year's end he could make his way among the elite tight ends.

Vernon Davis makes debut
News: 49ers rookie TE Vernon Davis made his much anticipated debut and it was an interesting one nonetheless. With his first pro catch he took it 31 yards to the house to start the scoring in the first quarter. Later in the first, he caught a little dump pass but fumbled it over to the Cardinals. On that play he injured his hip and left the game for a bit. He was taken into the locker room. He later returned to the game but was not as effective. He had three more receptions for three yards.
Analysis: The way Davis started his career was unreal. The TD pass from QB Alex Smith was a thing of beauty. But after he fumbled the football, he lost confidence in himself and it showed on the field. He later dropped a wide-open pass most likely because he was peaking to see where the defenders were. Davis is going to develop into a nice threat for the Niners, but it might take a few weeks. In two-deep TE leagues consider starting Davis Week 2 vs. St. Louis. Otherwise look for a better option at TE while Davis develops.

Rookie TE Davis leaves game
News: Heralded 49ers rookie TE Vernon Davis left the 49ers Week 1 game at Arizona with a hip contusion. He was taken into the locker room and his return is questionable. Davis' first pro reception went for a 31-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Later in the quarter he caught a three-yard pass from QB Alex Smith before fumbling it. Arizona recovered.
Analysis: It seemed Davis injured his hip on the play he fumbled the football. Davis returned to the sidelines about 15 minutes after heading into the locker room and it looks like he might return to action.

Vernon Davis gets tough love
News: A regular scene on the 49ers practice field has unfolded as rookie TE Vernon Davis sees more action. The offense will run a play and within a nanosecond of its completion, offensive coordinator Norv Turner is yelling at Davis about carrying out his assignment or running his route with more urgency. Davis said he understands the tough love and has no problem with being yelled at. "Norv is a great offensive coordinator," Davis said. "He's a genius when it comes to that stuff. He sees I have a lot of talent, so he's going to push me. When he sees me make a mistake -- I might make a mistake here and there -- he wants to get it corrected as soon as possible."
Analysis: Davis has been invisible in the stat box this preseason but is still expected to be a key part of the 49ers offense simply because second-year QB Alex Smith will be able to find him easily. He has amazing speed, great hands, great burst off the snap and is also a great blocker. He's a great rookie, and that's why he's recommended as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy tight end, worth taking in all leagues with a middle- to late-round pick. In rookie-only drafts, he's a top-five overall pick. Just remember, he is a rookie, so he's probably worth backing up with another good TE in leagues just to be safe.

TE Davis works with first team
News: The San Francisco Chronicle reports Eric Johnson suffered a pulled hip flexor muscle during practice on Wednesday. Since Johnson has been missing from practice, rookie Vernon Davis has been getting reps with the first-team offense.
Analysis: Davis has the potential to be a statistical beast for a San Francisco team that has few offensive weapons. Chances are that someone in every draft this season will target Davis a bit too early, but he should be perceived as a middle-round choice in seasonal formats and a top-five choice in rookie-only drafts.

No receptions for TE Davis
News: Rookie tight end Vernon Davis, the No. 6 overall draft pick, saw a lot of action in the first half in the team's first preseason game vs. Chicago, playing every snap during the 49ers' 13-play touchdown drive in the second quarter. Davis did not catch any passes -- nor did he have any thrown his way -- but did his fair share of blocking. "No, I'm not disappointed," Davis said. "As long as we won, that's all that matters."
Analysis: Head coach Mike Nolan said he would need to see game film before he can evaluate the rookie's performance. He has the potential to be a statistical beast for a San Francisco team that has few offensive weapons. Chances are that someone in every draft this season will tagret Davis a bit too early, but he should be perceived as a middle-round choice in seasonal formats and a top-five choice in rookie-only drafts.

Davis comes to terms with Niners
News: Tight end Vernon Davis signed his contract with the 49ers on Friday, just in time for the first practice of training camp. Davis, the sixth overall pick from Maryland, was the last of San Francisco's nine draft choices to sign with the club. "I was stressing at first, because I didn't know when it was going to get done," said Davis, who got about four hours of sleep before his first workout. "I told (the negotiators) I just wanted to get out there and play. I'm not a guy who can miss days."
Analysis: Davis has the potential to be a statistical beast for a San Francisco team that has few offensive weapons. Considering the lack of depth at the tight end position, he could be one of the first handful of options on Draft Day. He's a solid keeper choice and a middle rounder in seasonal formats.

Vernon Davis: 'I'll be a Jet'
News: The New York Post reports that Maryland TE Vernon Davis thinks he will be a New York Jet when the 2006 NFL Draft is over. "I think I'm going to the Jets," he said. "If I'd say anything, I'd say the Jets will draft me. I'm pretty sure, if nothing crazy happens, it'll be the Jets."
Analysis: Such a pick would be surprising since the Jets already have Chris Baker and Doug Jolley at tight end. Davis could be the first tight end taken in the top five since 1972. It looks like Davis is going to go high and fit in with an offense right away, making him a potential stud Fantasy option. He's going to get drafted in every Fantasy league no matter what, but the potential is there for him to be taken with a middle-round pick if he lands in a favorable situation. In dynasty league drafts, Davis will be a top five pick, possibly as high as third overall.

Jets interested in Vernon Davis?
News: Newsday reports that the Jets are now showing an interest in Maryland TE Vernon Davis, who is expected to be a top-10 pick in the 2006 NFL Draft and is considered to be in the mold of Antonio Gates. This news comes out the same day that the 49ers, who were previously interested in Davis, are now thinking about drafting Texas CB/S Michael Huff at No. 6.
Analysis: Davis could be the first tight end taken in the top five since 1972. It looks like Davis is going to go high and fit in with an offense right away, making him a potential stud Fantasy option. He's going to get drafted in every Fantasy league no matter what, but the potential is there for him to be taken with a middle-round pick if he lands in a favorable situation. Broncos want rookie TE Davis
News: Maryland TE Vernon Davis has apparently caught the eye of the Denver Broncos, reports the Rocky Mountain News. The Broncos have two first-round picks, including the 15th overall, and would consider Davis if they moved up into the top five or six. Davis is a tremendous pass-catching prospect whose stock rose when he ran a 4.38 at the Combine.
Analysis: Davis could be the first tight end taken in the top five since 1972. The 49ers supposedly covet Davis and won't let him slip past them at six. It looks like Davis is going to go high and fit in with an offense right away, making him a potential stud Fantasy option. He's going to get drafted in every league no matter what, but the potential is there for him to be taken with a middle-round pick if he lands in a favorable situation (Denver, for one). In dynasty league drafts, Davis will be a top five pick, possibly as high as third overall.
