(6/13/2013) According to Fox Sports 910AM in Phoenix, Cardinals running back Rashard Mendenhall has "clearly" been the No. 1 running back during minicamp and offseason work thus far. Mendenhall in battle to start

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/14/2013) The Cardinals official team website reports that the running back battle for the starting job between Rashard Mendenhall, Ryan Williams and rookies Stepfan Taylor and Andre Ellington could be wide open. “You really can’t tell until the lights come on,” coach Bruce Arians said. “... Until you turn the lights on, you really don’t know about them.” Mendenhall had his best years under Arians in Pittsburgh and now that he’s had so much time to recover from his knee issues – plus his one-year-need-to-prove-it contract – he could be primed for a rebound season. Williams seems certain he will be effective this year, after never being certain in his knee early last season before suffering his shoulder problem. If both come through, Taylor and Ellington won’t be needed. Even if they are, they have to show they are ready.

Mendenhall looks like starter

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(3/20/2013) In an interview with CBSSports.com at the NFL owners meeting in Phoenix on Wednesday, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians hinted that newly-signed running back Rashard Mendenhall would be the starter this season. "I prefer one guy," Arians said, and he gushed about Mendenhall since the two have a history going back to Pittsburgh. "Adding a player the caliber of Rashard, a proven back who can carry you to the Super Bowl, not only helps the football team but it helps your locker room. Obviously we have a good history together. I know how to use him. He’s a heck of a player in all phases. He never has to come out of the game."

Steelers GM: Mendenhall wasn't in shape

by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(3/19/2013) The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that running back Rashard Mendenhall never was 100 percent healed from his serious knee injury during a disappointing 2012 season that ultimately led the Steelers to allow him to leave as a free agent, according to general manager Kevin Colbert. The report says Colbert doesn't believe he ever got back to the shape he was in during 2011. “Honestly, I don't think he ever quite got to point where he was 100 percent as we've seen him before,” Colbert said. Last week, Mendenhall signed a $2.5 million, one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals that includes numerous incentives. Cardinals coach Bruce Arians was the Steelers' offensive coordinator during Mendenhall's first four seasons.

Mendenhall 'unlikely' to stay

by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(1/25/2013) A report on the Steelers official website says it's "unlikely" unrestricted free agent Rashard Mendenhall returns this offseason. Mendenhall's return from a torn ACL last season was marred by other minor injuries but a particular week stands out to the Steelers' front office. Per the report, Mendenhall didn't show up for the team's game against the Chargers after being made inactive. "Any time a player doesn't show up for a game, that’s unacceptable," Steelers GM Kevin Colbert said. "There’s no circumstance, other than obviously a family emergency or something of that nature which would have been predetermined to be excusable."
