Islanders' Jaroslav Halak: Will need offseason surgery

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/18/16) Halak (groin) will require surgery to repair a sport hernia, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.

Halak was sidelined since early March and missed the Islanders last 29 contests including the playoffs. With a six to eight week recovery time, the netminder should be ready to go for the start of the 2016-17 campaign. Although Thomas Greiss performed well in relief, you can expect Halak to reclaim the starting spot in New York after posting a 18-13-4 record that included three shutouts along with a .919 save percentage.

Islanders' Jaroslav Halak: Still not ready to play

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(5/2/16) Halak (groin) still isn't ready to return to the Islanders, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.

Even if Halak was healthy he would not be starting for the Isles. Thomas Greiss has been nothing short of spectacular in the playoffs as he has a .937 save percentage and has won five of his eight starts. Still, the Isles would like to see Halak at least be able to serve as the backup goaltender but even though he is skating and participating in practice he will still watch Game 3 on Tuesday from the press box.

Islanders' Jaroslav Halak: Out Saturday

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/30/16) Halak (groin) won't dress for Saturday's Game 2 against the Lightning, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.

Halak has been making progress in his recovery from a groin injury of late, taking shots and participating fully in Friday's morning skate, but still isn't ready to draw back into the Islanders' lineup, even in a backup role. New York likely doesn't feel inclined to rush the 30-year-old netminder back into game action, as Thomas Greiss has been fantastic in his absence, compiling a 5-2-0 record with an impressive 1.94 GAA and .941 save percentage over seven playoff starts. The Islanders should provide an update on Halak's status once he's set to return to the lineup.

Islanders' Jaroslav Halak: Active in Friday's skate

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/29/16) Halak (groin) took shots and fully participated in morning skate Friday, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.

Halak has witnessed goalie teammate Thomas Greiss engaging cruise control in the playoffs, winning five of seven games through Game 1 of the conference semifinals against the Lightning. Still, considering that three of Greiss' outings versus the Panthers in the quarterfinals went into overtime or beyond, it would make sense for the Isles to roll out Halak as soon as he's deemed healthy. Remember, Halak worked his way into 36 contests during the regular season, coming away with wins in half of his appearances. Check back on game day to see if Halak at least will be ready to serve in a backup role.

Islanders' Jaroslav Halak: Taking shots at practice

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/27/16) Halak (groin) was a full participant at practice Wednesday, including facing shots from his teammates, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.

Halak's last appearance in goal game Mar. 8 against the Penguins and he has been sidelined ever since. While getting on the ice is a step in the right direction, the team is unlikely to rush the 30-year-old back as long as fellow netminder Thomas Greiss continues to dominate in goal. In fact, even if Halak is healthy enough to return, coach Jack Capuano may be reluctant to deviate from the hot hand of Greiss. Regardless of what happens in the postseason, the Islanders could have a goalie controversy for the 2016-17 campaign with both guys under contract and looking to start.
