Islanders' Jaroslav Halak: Active in Friday's skate

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(2:29 pm ET) Halak (groin) took shots and fully participated in morning skate Friday, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.

Halak has witnessed goalie teammate Thomas Greiss engaging cruise control in the playoffs, winning five of seven games through Game 1 of the conference semifinals against the Lightning. Still, considering that three of Greiss' outings versus the Panthers in the quarterfinals went into overtime or beyond, it would make sense for the Isles to roll out Halak as soon as he's deemed healthy. Remember, Halak worked his way into 36 contests during the regular season, coming away with wins in half of his appearances. Check back on game day to see if Halak at least will be ready to serve in a backup role.

Islanders' Jaroslav Halak: Taking shots at practice

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/27/16) Halak (groin) was a full participant at practice Wednesday, including facing shots from his teammates, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.

Halak's last appearance in goal game Mar. 8 against the Penguins and he has been sidelined ever since. While getting on the ice is a step in the right direction, the team is unlikely to rush the 30-year-old back as long as fellow netminder Thomas Greiss continues to dominate in goal. In fact, even if Halak is healthy enough to return, coach Jack Capuano may be reluctant to deviate from the hot hand of Greiss. Regardless of what happens in the postseason, the Islanders could have a goalie controversy for the 2016-17 campaign with both guys under contract and looking to start.

Islanders' Jaroslav Halak: Takes to the ice

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/20/16) Halak (groin) was on the ice Wednesday, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.

While it's a good sign that Halak is back on the ice, he's not yet practicing with the team or taking shots. Then again the way Thomas Greiss has played versus Florida in the first three games of the playoffs the Isles aren't really missing much in net. Halak has already been ruled out of the first-round but if the Isles advance and Halak is deemed healthy enough to play, coach Jack Capuano would have an interesting decision on his hands.

Islanders' Jaroslav Halak: Will miss first round of playoffs

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/12/16) Halak (groin) has been ruled out for the team's opening round series against Florida, Peter Botte of the NY Daily News reports.

Halak has been out since Mar. 8 and missed a total of 18 contests. With Jean-Francois Berube (lower body) also recovering from injury, the team will likely turn the net over to Thomas Greiss. It remains unclear of the 24-year-old Halak would be ready for the next round if the Isles make it. The netminder was having a decent season prior to getting hurt, as he went 18-13-4, including three shutouts. However, if he does suit up again, his fantasy value will be diminished until he can prove he has shaken of the rust.

Islanders' Jaroslav Halak: Has returned to skating

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(4/8/16) Halak (groin) was skating in pads Thursday, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.

While it is certainly good news that Halak has returned to the ice he didn't take any shots which would seem to indicate he is still some time away from returning to the starting lineup. The Isles will likely open up the playoff on Wednesday or Thursday but it would seem unlikely at this point that Halak would be ready to start on either of those days. The original timetable for Halak was 6-8 weeks but Halak has only been out of the lineup for a little over four weeks. Thomas Greiss is still the likely starter for the Isles as they start their playoff run.
