Devils To Rest Schneider Monday
Schneider will not play in Monday's preseason opener against the Rangers.
|With Martin Brodeur no longer a Devil, Cory Schneider enters this season as his team’s undisputed No. 1 netminder for the first time in his career. On the ice last season, Schneider’s season was an amalgamation of bad luck, poor goal support and some rough stretches of play, as he posted a 16-15-15 record with a miniscule 1.97 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage. Schneider lost more than his share of games last season when the Devils were shutout and he was a victim of the team’s inability to close out games either in regulation or the shootout, as the Devils did not win a shootout last year. There’s little reason to think that Schneider won’t play between 70 and 75 games this season as the team’s backstop. The Devils might not give Schneider league-leading win totals this year, but his averages will be high enough to make those nights he loses 1-0 and 2-1 easier to take. (Updated 8/13/14) |
