Panthers' Roberto Luongo: Will start second game of doubleheader

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(9/26/16) Luongo has been named the starter for the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Predators, George Richards of the Miami Herald reports.

Luongo spent the offseason rehabbing a hip injury, but is ready to go for the start of the 2016-17 campaign. After struggling in his first full year with Florida, the netminder resumed his top tier form last year as he went 35-19-6 including four shutouts and a .922 save percentage. Assuming he can stay healthy, the 37-year-old should make it three consecutive seasons with 60+ appearances in goal.

Panthers' Roberto Luongo: Apparently ready for new season

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(9/22/16) Luongo (hip) said he's "good to go" for the 2016-17 season.

It's not uncommon for a player to declare himself healthy, only for the team's medical staff to paint a different picture, but Luongo is a 16-year veteran who undoubtedly knows how his body should hold up post-injury. Bobby Lu was reluctant to give a clear timetable for his return two weeks ago, so he must be seeing true progress in his rehab. Fantasy owners should focus less on his recovery from hip surgery than his standing as a top-tier backstop on a Florida team that will feature a retooled defense in the upcoming season.

Panthers' Roberto Luongo: Without clear timetable for return

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(9/6/16) While Luongo (hip) is preparing for the start of the 2016-17 season, he has refrained from giving a timetable for his return to game action, Harvey Fialkov of the Sun Sentinel reports.

It's simply too early to tell if Luongo will work between the pipes when the Panthers open the season against the Devils on Oct. 13, though it's encouraging that the 37-year-old is not ruling out returning for that first contest at home. Whenever he's ready, the veteran should benefit from Florida's retooled defense that now includes the likes of offensive blueliners Keith Yandle, Jason Demers and Mark Pysyk, along with James Riemer and Reto Berra as depth option in goal.

Panthers' Roberto Luongo: Aiming to be healthy for season opener

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(8/24/16) Luongo (hip) plans to be in goal for the start of the 2016-17 season, the Miami Herald reports.

Reports dating back to early July suggested that Nov. 1 was the soonest Luongo would be able to return to game ice following hip surgery performed in May, but the celebrated veteran reportedly has been on the ice regularly since August 5. Better yet, this doesn't appear to be an example of a player feigning optimism in order to try to come back before he's ready. Goalie coach Rob Tallas said, "We're going into our fourth week and he's doing really well. He is very optimistic about starting the season and has put a lot of time in not only at the rink but off the ice. He has really committed himself this summer to being 100 percent again. We're at the point where there aren't a lot of restrictions on what he's doing on the ice. That's a great sign." Luongo may be 37 years old, but he's turned back the clock by posting a 2.35 GAA and 63 wins over the last two seasons. While he's evidently ahead of schedule in his rehab, it would be wise to track his progress through training camp before counting on another season of 60-plus appearances between the pipes.

Panthers' Roberto Luongo: Likely sidelined until November

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(7/2/16) Luongo, who underwent hip surgery in May, has an estimated return date of November 1, Sportsnet's John Shannon reports.

Initially, the Panthers believed Luongo would be fully recovered by the start of the season, but it sounds like there may have been a setback. Tom Rowe, Florida's new general manager, is not taking any chances with his depth among defensemen and goalies -- the offseason is still in its infancy and already he's acquired goalies Reto Berra and James Reimer, plus quality blueliners in Mark Pysyk, Jason Demers and Keith Yandle. As if that wasn't enough, he re-signed Aaron Ekblad, a terrific scoring defenseman, for eight years. Bump Luongo down on your fantasy draft cheat sheets since he's expected to get off to a late start to the next campaign, but don't drop him too far as he'll have a retooled supporting cast protecting the crease in front of him once he's ready to rock.
